Cruise passenger rescued after 10 hours in the sea

How amazing that this woman managed to keep calm enough to stay afloat for ten hours before being rescued - and she seemed remarkably unfazed by the whole experience. I wonder how she fell overboard.

I read in the I today that 319 people have gone overboard since 2000 and it is "extremely uncommon" for them to be found alive. I was surprised that so many people have fallen or jumped overboard while on cruises.

Someone said she was not dressed as she would be for an evening on board - perhaps she discarded some of her clothes in case they dragged her down.

I too find it very hard to believe that a drunken woman could swim or float for ten hours I would have thought with impaired functions she would have been more likely to drown

Bluebelle well what do you think she did for 10 hours? Was she part of a conspiracy, there was a secret submarine or something? Was the ship's log wrong and it wasn't 10 hours?

Where was she for 10 hours? Unless she's a secret endurance ocean swimmer, I can't believe it's part of a cunning plan!

Chewbacca Tue 21-Aug-18 17:29:57

She sang. And "did yoga excercises". Apparently.
It's a shame for every one of the other passengers on board the cruise liner too. The holidays that they'd saved long and hard for were diverted and their designated stop overs were cancelled or delayed whilst the ship turned around to look for her. Everyone is impacted by the actions of others.

Perhaps her boyfriend threw her a life belt

BlueBelle Tue 21-Aug-18 17:27:02

Oh Riverwalk she was NOT. desperate I saw her interviewed just after they got her out she was full of it laughing and telling everyone how fit she was at 46 in fact they had to cut into her chattering to move her on She was definitely not a desperate woman
Had she had a hairdryer to dry her hair as I would have expected her to have look bedraggled bemused upset a bit down in the mouth and yes embarrassed she looked like a film star just been doing a film scene

I have no sympathy for this woman people missed flights and boat connections and a ten hour delay of course I m glad she’s out BUT she should pay towards her rescue

There are 28 species of sharks that live in the Adriatic Sea including blue sharks, catsharks, great whites, sand tigers, and spiny dogfish
She was very lucky indeed.

Riverwalk Tue 21-Aug-18 17:21:39

I can't believe she spent the night swimming.

What else could she do? confused

merlotgran Tue 21-Aug-18 17:21:35

I think it would sober me up pretty quickly. grin

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Aug-18 17:16:37

And if she'd been drinking that's a sure way of dying quickly once you hit the water.
That's the odd thing Fennel, it was reported that she had been drinking but DH and I wondered how she survived in the water for all that long if she had not been sober.

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Aug-18 17:15:08

If she did jump rather than fell then we should be happy - would you miseries rather she drowned?
I'd rather she didn't jump in the first place; however, I agree with ginny's post.

Riverwalk yes, one can understand that desperate people may not always be thinking rationally. However, a man was threatening to jump off a bridge not far away a few years ago and the whole motorway was shut for hours - people, small children, lorries, business people all stuck there for all that time.
Another time the motorway was shut for hours when someone else threatening to jump off a bridge - it was freezing cold and children and vulnerable people needed medical attention after that incident.

Fennel Tue 21-Aug-18 17:13:27

Jalima - I agree with you.
I heard her speaking on the news this morning and she sounded quite jolly.

Desperate people do desperate things. I live next to a bridge and there have been a number of 'jumpers' over the years.

Once at midday I went out and there was absolute silence as the police had stopped all traffic on the bridge and the embankments on both sides - I could see a young man, in red trousers, standing ready to jump.

We're talking the middle of London here - the whole operation must have been an inconvenience to many. No doubt it also cost money but that's what rescue services are for.

ginny Tue 21-Aug-18 16:39:49

I’m sure everyone is glad she is fit and well. However , if she jumped , she put other people at risk and inconvenience not to mention the money it cost

It doesn't matter how she got there - that she was rescued after 10 hours is the big deal! All credit to the rescuers.

She must have been very fit to float/swim/doggie paddle for so long - says something about human endurance.

Kittye Tue 21-Aug-18 16:01:35

Jalima I was thinking along the same lines

ginny Tue 21-Aug-18 14:20:01

All sorts of ?? things going on today.

sparkly1000 Tue 21-Aug-18 13:57:37

Just listened to a discussion on local radio. Questions raised were:- How can anyone accidentally "fall" over a 6-8' rail?

The cost to the shipping company for the search and diversion is estimated to be at least £350,00.

Blinko Tue 21-Aug-18 12:25:50

Even if she jumped, it's a wonder she wasn't dragged into the propellers by the powerful undertow. All very strange.

JenniferEccles Tue 21-Aug-18 12:18:01

I would like to think this young woman would be charged for the cost of her rescue, but somehow I doubt it.

What struck me is that there seemed to be no shame on her part. She almost seemed to be enjoying the publicity a bit too much.

merlotgran Tue 21-Aug-18 12:16:17

The boyfriend's keeping very quiet isn't he?

M0nica Tue 21-Aug-18 11:54:41

I gather there is CCTV footage. This is why they knew so precisely where to look for her, they could pinpoint the exact time she went over and the ship's exact position at that time.

glammanana Tue 21-Aug-18 11:42:13

Chewbacca My thoughts exactly very strange usually late at night on a cruise you would be dressed for dinner not for swimming/sunbathing.
I'm glad she was rescued but am not convinced she fell.

Chewbacca Tue 21-Aug-18 11:36:30

If she fell, how come she had hardly any clothes on when she was rescued? It was midnight when she went overboard but in this photo she's wearing only a pair of shorts and a bra when she was being helped aboard the rescue ship.

Photo is from news.com.au

Jalima1108 Tue 21-Aug-18 11:17:30

I thought she might have been having a Titanic moment standing up on the rail.
Perhaps she wanted to do a Kate Winslet

I thought that too - or Kate Windswept as my DC called her after 'Titanic'.

It's all very strange and doesn't seem to quite add up. She must be very strong to have kept afloat and survived for 10 hours in the water, even though it was apparently warm and, yes, appear very unfazed afterwards.

Do we await the TV appearances? Book? Film?
Or am I just very cynical
