Aldi expansion

Aldi have announced a large expansion and are about to employ a further 1000 members of staff. They aren't worried about Brexit then.

In this small town, we have Aldi and Waitrose less than half a mile apart, with a sizeable Morrisons just around the corner from Aldi. All three have their devotees - and good car parking. I use Aldi for basic necessities and Waitrose for more luxury things - like more specialist cheeses, though Aldi does a rather good Gorgonzola. I spotted a small section of gluten-free products recently, kitty. Last year, in France, we found our usual Aldi closed for refurbishment - much needed! - but, just across the road, a huge and very modern Lidl supermarket, doing a good trade. I haven't been back to Vaison la Romaine this year, but wonder how the competition is going.

I thought you were an expert on all things British Jura no?

jura2 Wed 10-Oct-18 09:26:08

tell us about the Archers, Maw- please tell.

Something?!?

Oh no- certainly not now.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 09:23:42

confusedconfused
Something like got out of bed on the wrong side?

jura2 Wed 10-Oct-18 09:21:23

Can't help there, Maw- I never have listened to the Archers - could you enlighten us perhaps- although I am aware you don't like suggestions re contributions.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 09:20:32

... to be able to pick up the market without much effort- because we have voluntarily destroyed ours- win, win

So cynical.
Are you planning to move back then?

Teetime Wed 10-Oct-18 09:20:20

Went in yesterday to buy some golf competition prizes e.g. wine- Oh dear, chaotic, empty shelves and two middle aisles a jumble sale. That was my last visit.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 09:19:25

Certainly nothing in the story to work up a head of steam about.
Now, how about Brexit and The Archers?

jura2 Wed 10-Oct-18 09:19:20

... to be able to pick up the market without much effort- because we have voluntarily destroyed ours- win, win

jura2 Wed 10-Oct-18 09:17:15

on to something there petra ;)

you have to see the funny side, for sure.

Fennel Wed 10-Oct-18 09:05:51

petra - I've got no idea, that's why I asked.
Maybe they think we'll all be so impoverished that we'll stop going to Waitrose, Sainsburys, even Tesco etc. And all flood into their stores. Which will compensate for the extra transport and customs costs.

Blencathra Wed 10-Oct-18 06:15:16

I don't see where Brexit comes in- we all have to eat whatever. I don't have an Aldi but love Lidl - would quite happily go to Aldi if we had one.

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 02:38:28

Oh dear, that killed the conversation stone dead didn’t it? confused

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 22:51:12

grin good question merlot. It's right up there with the question "How did the subject of supermarket expansion end up again in the Brexit conundrum"

merlotgran Tue 09-Oct-18 22:18:33

How can anyone who voted to leave not be credible if they haven't said anything? hmm

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 22:08:44

You don't have to be credible to buy edibles.

jura2 Tue 09-Oct-18 22:05:18

Yes, I understand this is how you feel- and we will have to agree to disagree ;)

I always have a 1E coin, a £1 coin, and a 2CHF in a separate pocket in my purse - like a Girl guide, always ready.

AS said, I personally believe that if you feel strongly about anything, you should be able to stand by it and give rational reasons. Sadly, few Leavers do. But yes, it is indeed their prerogative - even it does not make them credible.

MawBroon Tue 09-Oct-18 22:04:30

How were you able to vote Jura as you live in Switzerland?.
I thought I remembered you being very vocal on behalf of expats precisely because they were denied the vote?

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 21:54:12

Jura there is no reason, absolutely none at all, why any Gransnetter or anyone else for that matter, should have to explain why they voted as they did. This is a topic about Aldi the supermarket, not Brexit despite your assertions to the contrary. And people will shop wherever they feel they will get the best value for money, irrespective of how they voted. You can rail against the injustice of this all you like, but you cannot, and will not, change people's shopping habits, either on their retail predilictions or on their voting choices. If this continues to irk you to such an extent, I can only suggest that you contact Aldi and Lidl and request that, as from March 2019, all customers are given a lie detector test, before entering their stores, to determine how they voted and to be excluded from their stores if they fail. But be aware that this could cause a snarl up at the trolley docking station whilst customers fumble for their £1 coins. or euro

jura2 Tue 09-Oct-18 21:32:27

Well Chew 'But jura how do you know if those who shop in Aldi or Lidl voted Remain or Leave?'

Some people here have made it very clear. I said I voted remain, and I remember who said the same- with often giving very good reasons for doing so.

Others here made it clear they voted Leave - very few, perhaps none- explained explained why.

As for being hoisted on own petard- fair enough, I say. Your choice of words- at least be honest and stand by your vote.

petra Tue 09-Oct-18 20:55:39

Mmmm... why do you think that is Fennel ?
Could it be that they didn't believe, George Osborne, Mark Carney, Phillip Hammond when they told us that the sky was going to fall in if we left the eu?

MawBroon Tue 09-Oct-18 20:52:44

Good point Fennel and jalima
We might have to ( pace certain Gransnetters) wait and see wink

Jalima1108 Tue 09-Oct-18 20:39:56

They must know things that we don't Fennel

Fennel Tue 09-Oct-18 20:33:26

Something that puzzles me - Aldi (and Lidl too) is a German-owned company.
Why would they choose to expand here now, just when the UK is about to leave the EU? Won't that complicate their business dealings?

Jalima1108 Tue 09-Oct-18 20:12:52

I do like a banana for my brekkie but it has to be the 'right' banana! And not ripe either.
