British Summer Time

I hate putting the clocks back and it being dark so early. I know it doesn't make any difference to the number of hours of daylight, but its such an unnecessary kerfuffle.
Anyone else agree?

BlueBelle Sat 27-Oct-18 05:18:07

Many countries in the world do this it’s not unique to us

I can’t see anything to worry about it changes full stop it’s just par of the course either you get mornings dark until 9 or nights dark at 4 Horses for courses

I am quite happy to move back to GMT at the weekend - and stay there.

Morocco has decided not to bother with the shift. Unfortunately it has decided to stick to summer time.

I’d be quite happy if we didn’t change the clocks. Perhaps Scotland and the North of England could start school later if darkness is a problem. (I live in the NE).
I’m having my GDs tonight and look forward to a very early morning but what can be done? Time to rethink this?

stree Sat 27-Oct-18 13:19:11

My grandaughter warned me that there would probably be large queues at all the shops tonight.
"why" is aked.
Because all the clocks have to go back.

EllanVannin Sat 27-Oct-18 13:25:29

I 'm another who looks forward to December the 21st ! I loathe the long dark nights there doesn't seem to be an end from 4pm onwards,it's horrible.

I quite like the dark evenings - great for cosy hobbies.

Theoretically we should be on the same time zone as France and Spain yet they’re an hour ahead.

I don’t really care which time gets used, just that it stays the same. It’d be much easier for schools in different parts of the country to adjust their start and finish times according to local needs and preferences.

I was always told it was something to do with farmers in Scotland..... I had hopes that they would declare UDI then we could simply adopt GMT all the time. Ho hum!

paddyann Sun 28-Oct-18 00:13:55

Some of us are praying for UDI too Blinko it would solve an awful lot more than a time change .Of course England would lose the revenue for the 2Trillion pounds worth of oil still to be harvested .THATS just one of the reasons Westminster are keen to hold onto us .

NfkDumpling Sun 28-Oct-18 06:41:40

I always thought the Scottish farmers thing was just fake news. Cows don’t wear watches and the world still turns and tilts and the daylight hours still stay the same. When the government tried keeping to BST the accident rate rose in the mornings, so they changed back. I never heard whether there were fewer accidents in the evenings.

I just know I was awake and ready for the day just after five this morning. Determinedly stayed in bed until half past.

NfkDumpling Sun 28-Oct-18 06:43:29

We want you to stay Blinko because we love you.?

PECS Sun 28-Oct-18 07:38:27

nfk the accident statistics confused me. It is going to be darker one end of the day so were there fewer accidents altogether or did they just occur at different times? Need to research this!
I notice the time chane more now I do not work f/t. I stop being busy when it is dark!

MawBroon Sun 28-Oct-18 08:17:12

Whilst we got an extra hours sleep last night , spare a thought for the National Trust Volunteers who work tirelessly through the night to move the stones back 1 hour at various stone circles around the country side. This is done twice a year to make sure the stones align correctly with the sun.

Anniebach Sun 28-Oct-18 08:35:47

There was a trial in 1968 to 1971 , the clocks weren’t changed, the mornings were very dark

Bathsheba Sun 28-Oct-18 08:41:51

PECS Sun 28-Oct-18 09:06:49

MAW ????

henetha Sun 28-Oct-18 09:39:39

I don't mind one way or the other. But I completely forgot it this time and therefore got up an hour earlier than I needed to.
I love that, MawBroon !

PamelaJ1 Sun 28-Oct-18 09:59:26

Why do they have to work through the night maw?
I can’t imagine many of us have to get up at the crack of dawn to check our time by the nearest stones.
Maybe it has to be done just as the sun comes up??

POGS Sun 28-Oct-18 10:33:43

Mawbroon. grin

A ' monumental'decision.

tanith Sun 28-Oct-18 11:21:53

If we stayed on gmt +1 as they tried in the 80s the kids were going to school in the dark. as said above nobody complains in the spring. Just part of winter. Although have seen on facebook that the EU are sticking their beaks in to try to stop it. Telling us how to run our lives as usual, hopefully they will but out when we leave!!!

Camelotclub Sun 28-Oct-18 11:36:15

From The Guardian:
The Summertime Act of 1916 established two clock changes per year. During the second world war, double British summer time was invented as an energy-saving device, effectively putting the country on the same footing as mainland Europe - GMT+1 in the winter, and GMT+2 in the summer. In 1947, Britain reverted to normal.

We should be grateful we only have a one hour difference now!

Jalima1108 Sun 28-Oct-18 11:38:51

I think it must have happened since then as well, because I remember double summer time and I'm not old enough to remember 1946.

Jalima1108 Sun 28-Oct-18 11:40:35

An inquiry during the winter of 1959–60, in which 180 national organisations were consulted, revealed a slight preference for a change to all-year GMT+1, but instead the length of summer time was extended as a trial.[9] A further inquiry during 1966–67 led the government of Harold Wilson to introduce the British Standard Time experiment, with Britain remaining on GMT+1 throughout the year. This took place between 27 October 1968 and 31 October 1971, when there was a reversion to the previous arrangement.
