I LOVE IT!

I was hoping to see some money in the budget given to the police but sadly that didn't happen.

maryeliza54 Thu 29-Nov-18 16:48:57

Of course it does rather beg the question as to why we have an ever decreasing number of police officers- I expect the wicked witch from the west spirited them away

JenniferEccles Thu 29-Nov-18 16:45:23

I was initially concerned about the possible repercussions on the police if a moped thug was killed, but I am certain they would have weighed up the pros and cons before embarking on this.

After all it wouldn't have been a couple of young officers in a police car egging each other on would it?

Permission to do it must have come from fairly high up I would imagine. Long may it continue.

For those who are against this tactic, you need to be aware that criminals are no longer afraid of the ever diminishing numbers of police we do still have, and probably even less scared of the laughably pathetic punishments meted out by judges on the few who do get caught.

We live in very scary times.

I think it’s the only tactic that will work with the moped thugs, they aren’t just making off with phones and bags, they are spraying acid and attacking with hammers, knives etc and also by zig zagging off at great speeds in the city endangering anyone crossing the roads. If this stops them escalating, then fine.

LadyGracie Thu 29-Nov-18 13:50:43

It’s a great idea and about time!

Jalima1108 Thu 29-Nov-18 13:01:42

It's the chasing at speed that worries me.

I agree, though, that something needs to be done and they deserve severe punishment.
One gang that was caught last year were quite young but were riding around wielding hammers and crowbars and driving on to the pavements in London.
Another report says they use acid, samurai swords etc.

They are known to steal the mopeds as well, from unsuspecting owners, in quite a vicious way.

It is highly organised crime with a market for expensive mobiles the motive.

maryeliza54 Thu 29-Nov-18 12:54:44

What on Earth are you referring to nice your post makes no sense whatsoever. And yes I’m for real whatever that means - ideas about using the stocks otoh are pure fantasy

Jalima1108 Thu 29-Nov-18 12:50:15

In Singapore.
Goodness Fennel
there was me thinking it was one of the safest places in the world!

Nicenanny3 Thu 29-Nov-18 12:47:51

Good grief Maryeliza are you for real no wonder the world's gone to pot.

notanan2 Thu 29-Nov-18 12:46:02

There should be a " nail strip " similar to what's used on the stolen car criminals.

That would require team work. I.e. numbers/resources.

maryeliza54 Thu 29-Nov-18 12:42:33

if I took part in an action designed to humiliate someone I believe the only person humilated by my actions would be me - we should all be much better than that and thank goodness most of us are. Humiliating someone is a form of bullying.

Fennel Thu 29-Nov-18 12:42:14

ps I should have said loaded with cartridges filled with rice.
Never had to use it TG, but if it was up to me, I wouldn't have been able to.

Fennel Thu 29-Nov-18 12:38:51

"whipped her bag off her shoulder."
That's what happened to me, Jalima. In Singapore.
But that was a different situation. We used to keep a shotgun loaded with rice under the bed.

EllanVannin Thu 29-Nov-18 12:15:53

MaryEliza54 yes,it's about humiliation as these thugs think they're tough and above the law so throwing rotten stuff at them would be just the punishment that's needed.
What are your suggestions, a slapped wrist ?

maryeliza54 Thu 29-Nov-18 10:56:25

I lived near Guildford when the pub bombing happened. I heard the hatred expressed and views of what people wanted to do to the Guildford Four - well we know how that worked our don’t we? And the Birmingham Six - and in both cases the people were subject to police brutality because well hey we all knew they were guilty didn’t we?

Luckygirl Thu 29-Nov-18 10:31:21

And please don't ask me what I might do instead as I have no answer. What I do know is that this policy is morally dubious.

Luckygirl Thu 29-Nov-18 10:30:00

However angry we might all feel about criminals of all sorts, if our law-enforcers adopt tactics that are dubious in their morality, it is a poor refection on our civilisation.

If someone moped-mugged any of my loved ones, I would be incandescent with rage, as we all would, but I also recognise that there are police actions that cannot be tolerated in a civilised nation. The issuing of guns to police and their use is rightly very carefully monitored and circumscribed; in this instance the police is car is also a lethal weapon.

I am not on the side of the criminals - as someone is no doubt about to tell me! - but I value the ethos of our society.

maryeliza54 Thu 29-Nov-18 09:56:41

EV really ? A return to the stocks? I suppose public hangings for sheep stealing could make a come back as well? And then there’s lynch mobs.

EllanVannin Thu 29-Nov-18 09:49:22

I'd be all for the stocks in towns and cities to humiliate them. I'm sure many members of the public would have a field day.

gillybob Thu 29-Nov-18 09:48:45

Not sure it would work on mopeds though EllanVannin plus they would just dodge it up on to the pavement wouldn’t they?

EllanVannin Thu 29-Nov-18 09:46:32

There should be a " nail strip " similar to what's used on the stolen car criminals.

Diane Abbott who in their right mind would take any notice of anything she says another useless MP who only gets elected every year because she is in a safe seat. As for the police knocking lowlife scumbags off mopeds about time in my opinion they are finally doing something they have my 100% support.

gillybob Wed 28-Nov-18 22:28:48

Planet Jeremmmmyyyyy I suspect Rosina .

Rosina Wed 28-Nov-18 22:26:08

Dianne Abbot says the way to stop a potentially dangerous chase is to stop pursuing. Of course - how simple. Just let them drive off, and then they are free to attack some other hapless victim, and do so confident in the knowledge that they won't be chased if they go fast because it might be too dangerous. What planet does this woman live on? I wonder just how she would feel if one of her family were stabbed with a screwdriver, slashed or attacked with acid ?

Jalima1108 Wed 28-Nov-18 20:15:59

He should not have been riding his bike on the pavement!

Someone I know was the subject of one of those moped muggings years ago in a foreign country; she was sitting at a pavement café having a coffee and they went past and whipped her bag off her shoulder.
