Theresa May will lose the vote on Tuesday.

Do you agree?

And then what will happen next........let’s see whose prediction is the closest. Perhaps let this thread run about 2 weeks and see who got it right, or nearly right.

Declare a winner just before Christmas.

Over to you ?

Purplepoppies Sat 08-Dec-18 12:47:14

Elton John will go head to head with Nick Knowles for the Christmas number one spot....
Brexs##t talk is banned in my house. I wish 'they ' would just get on with it. Teresa May was landed an impossible task by her predecessor who jumped ship at the first sign of trouble IMO.

Any predictions on what would happen with a 52/48 remain result in the event of a second ballot, please?

The same only in reverse ……….

notgoneyet Sat 08-Dec-18 12:38:57

Entirely with you notanan2 - please please let us not get JC as prime minister sad

The worlds gone barking mad. All this time and money for what! No progress? Surely not to go back to square one and just remain in, we will be a laughing stock. I do think there will be a general election and I don't have the foggiest who I would vote for. I have never been negative but I'm starting to think a lot of things are out of our control and we are no longer a true democracy.

Doreen5 Sat 08-Dec-18 12:28:58

There will not be time for another referendum before we leave in March 2019.

GabriellaG Sat 08-Dec-18 12:26:23

Whatever the resultant mess after the furore dies down, we can be assured that food will still be in our shops, the world will still turn, Strictly will still be on BBC tv and we will still hsve a government.
If anyone thinks that the machinations behind the doors of numbers 10 and 11 and in parliament, bear any relation to our government's responsibility to it's country/voters, they are sadly mistaken. sad

Caro57 A top EU lawyer has said they wouldn't have to and we can withdraw Article 50 providing the change is done democratically.

Being super critical, I think the Tory MPs who are saying they will vote against the deal will capitulate and support her as they will not want a general election as given how the country is so fed up of the mess they may well lose. Still the last vote was voted down so there may well be some with principles.

Blondie49 Sat 08-Dec-18 12:09:19

Don’t think I need to stir pear drop - unfortunately ?

Granny23 Sat 08-Dec-18 12:06:41

I have a horrible feeling that the 'deal' which satisfies neither Leavers nor Remainers will be agreed in Westminster due to bribery and corruption and mass abstentions. The 13 Tory MPs who represent Scottish seats will all vote in favour in spite of the fact that their constituents voted strongly to remain and recent polls show that voters in Scotland are even more likely to vote remain now. This is because the Tories first loyalty is to the Union and they are aware that if the deal fails this will trigger another Scottish Independence referendum (or a general election where the SNP will stand on a manifesto that promises to declare UDI if they win the majority of seats in Scotland.

But who knows? Anything could happen. I suspect that there have been times past when similar shenanigans have taken place behind closed doors but in the absence of today's 24/7 instant News and Social Media, the powers that be were able to maintain the impression of swan like calm while paddling furiously below the surface.

I predict we will be "made to pay/suffer", whatever happens Brexitwise - simply for having the audacity to want to leave in the first place.

If we stay in we will have our currency changed to the euro to keep us in step at some point.

No democracy, no individuality...

I so hope that my prediction is wrong.

Sillyoldfool Sat 08-Dec-18 12:01:53

Trisher I do hope you are right on your first comment, but I despair the loss of democracy & sovereignty over what should have been a simple trading arrangement. I predict we will never be allowed to leave.

Urmstongran Sat 08-Dec-18 11:59:41

I don’t predict riots. Middle England doesn’t have the French passionate temperament.

It’s sad people blame David Davies & Dominic Raab for doing the honourable thing and resigning when they realised that text was being changed in draft proposals by civil servants (Olly Robbins) without their knowledge behind their backs. Dominic Raab actually called the Prime Minister out on this when the Withdrawal Agreement was presented to the Cabinet. No bloody wonder he resigned the next day! Who wouldn’t?
As Jeremy Corbyn said at PMQ’s. ‘Is the post merely a ceremonial one?’ ❗️

Caro57 Sat 08-Dec-18 11:59:20

Can anyone tell me, please. If we decide the best option is to stay in Europe do they automatically have to accept the we are staying put?

Ramblingrose22 Sat 08-Dec-18 11:52:18

There are so many possible outcomes to this bizarre situation.

The trouble with Theresa May is that she is very rigid. I'm not sure if she's flexible enough to change tack now and she's not comfortable about going back on things even when she knows she has to.

If the PM learns from the Chief Whip that she'll suffer a heavy defeat she'll postpone the vote if she wants to stay in her job or leave it as scheduled if she's fed up with the job.

However there's no point in postponing the vote if the EU won't agree to any more talks. That option is probably being explored behind the scenes but more talks are unlikely to produce any major concessions to the deal she has agreed to. If the EU agree to more talks she could extend Article 50 if that becomes necessary.

If the vote goes ahead and she loses I predict that she'll stay in place unless the defeat is heavy (say over 100 votes). Hard to predict what she'll do next though.

If she is forced to resign (the only way she will go) then a Leaver like Gove will fight to be leader along with BoJo, Jeremy Hunt and some member of the ERG who doesn't trust ex-Cabinet types. David Davis and Dominic Raab had better not stand as the agreement reached was negotiated on their watch and they didn't understand its implications even though they were responsible for directing the way the negotiations were conducted.

A second referendum would be a disaster. It is and should always have been Parliament's job to decide on such complicated matters. It is pointless to say that the decision was made first time round and we have to stick to it if new information comes to light. It's like saying the Earth is square and the person who subsequently proved otherwise should simply be ignored.

I don't believe there'll be riots on the streets if Brexit doesn't go ahead - what a load of twaddle. That is another version of Project Fear - this time from the Leavers.

I think we're stuck with a Tory Government with or wothout a new leader till 2022 and they need to start being honest with the electorate about what can realistically be achieved by way of a new withdrawal agreement and future relationship. However, I'm not holding my breath.......

Oh, I'm so sorry, mabon1. That reminded me irresistibly of the immortal lines from The Life of Brian:

"He's not the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy"

mokryna Sat 08-Dec-18 11:50:04

Yes evianers, I am/was in the same boat after 41 years.

trisher Sat 08-Dec-18 11:47:39

Sillyoldfool do you really see an EU army being able to keep ordinary citizens under control? I recommend you look at what is happening in France and think again.
I predict May will lose and resign.
Gove will step in, Boris will lead a party split. The government will go. There will be a hung Parliament. There will be a second referendum.

Riverdaffyd Sat 08-Dec-18 11:45:44

Old arty, who is JRM?

MaizieD Sat 08-Dec-18 11:45:11

I hope you are happy for your grandsons to be conscripted into the EU army

Why are all the Leavers so convinced of this 'conscription' thing? Are our young men 'conscripted' into NATO forces, or UN Peacekeeping forces? Or into the British army, come to that?

Can any Leaver link to an official EU document that sets out plans for conscription into this, so far, mythical, EU army?
