It strikes me the present disarray is an ideal opportunity for a person or persons to make a move and further their political ambitions.

I wonder who?

Anja Thu 17-Jan-19 14:26:16

I have been thinking of applying for an Irish passport. My grandfather was born in Donegal so I qualify,

otiva Thu 17-Jan-19 14:24:51

Absolutely, well said!

dollyjo Thu 17-Jan-19 14:19:45

I like your style, variant
but if we have to stay in the same 2 arty system of leadership.
Hilary Benn for labour (My favourite)
John Redwood for the Tories. He wouldn't put up with all of this Tory infighting nonsense that's going on.

leeds22 Thu 17-Jan-19 13:18:09

Paddyann -I too have dreamed of an Irish passport based on my GG grandmother but no chance. Perhaps Ireland will relax its rules for Remainer refugees!

Sheilasue Thu 17-Jan-19 12:56:49

Please not Boris, or that Reece Mogg thingy, he reminds me of lurch.

Fennel Thu 17-Jan-19 12:35:31

"Feb up with the whole lot and May is only being propped up by the DUP who were paid to do so."
Exactly Barmyoldbat we (OH&me) were just saying the same early this mornin
I would hope, though, that Yvette Cooper would do better. She does still seem to have some integrity.

Jabberwok Thu 17-Jan-19 12:34:45

Paddyann, I think you'll find it's only people with Irish grandparent/s that qualify for an Irish passport. I have an Irish G.Grandmother and as far as I can gather it's not a goer!!

Jzpap Thu 17-Jan-19 12:34:21

I wish we still had statesmen like John Major or Tony Blair to lead us through this shambles. LullyDully totally agree with your comment about IDS. Prefer Jess Philips to Corbyn but it probably won’t happen

123coco Thu 17-Jan-19 12:30:28

I am gobsmacked that anyone on here you can seriously think Theresa May is doing a good job. In what way! It’s nearly 3 years since the referendum. Doesn’t anyone realise the damage this government has done to the domestic policy in this country and David Cameron before that ,?with so-called austerity We still have historic levels of borrowing !! But hey the rich toffs are going to be alright whatever . And seriously Ann Widdecombe where on earth is your head that whoever said that shock

cathieb Thu 17-Jan-19 12:17:46

Whoever it was who said that they would like to be Boris Johnson's PA needs to look behind the breezy boffin exterior and see the lazy, ruthless opportunist that lies beneath. I know someone who worked with him, and apparently he would sell his grandmother if it advantaged him - a bit like he has dumped his wife (wives!)! Don't be fooled! He made a real mess of the foreign office job too.

Sputnik Thu 17-Jan-19 12:15:17

And I predict the rise of Tom Watson.....if Labour could just nudge the poisonous Corbyn out of the way.....

Nonnie Thu 17-Jan-19 12:04:14

Jess Philips? Oh please no. She would deafen us all and men would be frightened to speak. Just imagine her and Diane Abbott running things, could we sink that low? sad

ruthiek Thu 17-Jan-19 12:02:32

I just wish they would look at what they are doing to the country and work together, I am really frightened for our children and grandchildren’s future .

newnanny Thu 17-Jan-19 12:00:05

Varian I am laughing out loud that you believe Anna Soubury of all people and Vince Cable are 'good people'. To me they are dreadful politicians with bad ideas. I do believe Yvette Cooper has a reasonable track record over a long career and is hardworking.

I am expecting Amber Rudd, Andrea Leadome, Dominic Rabb, Esther McVey and Boris to throw hats into ring if another leadership contest but not expecting May to resign. If she would resign a strong Brexiteer could take charge. May is too bloody obliging to EU. Anybody would be better than Hopeless Hammond.

paddyann Thu 17-Jan-19 11:59:31

Willow10 do you qualify for an Irish Passport ? I'm about to check if we do as all of our GGP's were Irish .If we are and Brexit goes through with no deal and no Scottish Independence we're off to Eire.its always felt like home when we're there anyway .

sluttygran Thu 17-Jan-19 11:58:44

barmyoldbat. gringringrin

Willow10 Thu 17-Jan-19 11:56:10

I just wish I was still young enough to emigrate.

maxdecatt Thu 17-Jan-19 11:56:02

Emily Thornberry!!!! She that sneers at people who drive white vans and make an honest living with their own hands....not hands dipped in the public coffers. She and Anna Soubry are stablemates!

annifrance Thu 17-Jan-19 11:52:22

Well said sluttygran, and Varian you make my heart sing, can we add David Milliban into the mix. JRM, Give and Boris deserve to be shot at dawn.

If there is a second referendum whichever way it goes there is still the immovable object of a deal. Plus .ca change. I despair, for the whole world actually.

Craftycat Thu 17-Jan-19 11:49:25

Sorry Marg -Ann Widdicombe is far too busy being a 'personality' after doing Strictly & playing Panto in Redhill!
Apparently she is very good in it too.
I can't think of anyone I'd trust with the job right now but I do really think Teresa May is doing as good a job as anyone else could have done.

montymops Thu 17-Jan-19 11:49:21

Yes I rather agree with Varian about the choice of decent politicians- however the suggestions by others of Esther McVey and Ian Duncan- Smith are a no- no - neither has the necessary brains and McVey just tosses her blonde locks and thinks of herself - it’s all about her - while IDS bores for England -

Barmeyoldbat Thu 17-Jan-19 11:44:26

L.ovely post Sluttygran, couldn't agree more. Also what has Boris losing weight got to do with being a good leader may I ask. I expect his brain has shrunk as well as the rest of him

hapgran Thu 17-Jan-19 11:41:24

I think I am still in denial as I am pinning my hopes on a second referendum. Some wise words on here though...

sluttygran Thu 17-Jan-19 11:32:18

It seems that the future welfare of the country has become a secondary consideration in this internecine struggle for power. We appear to be halfway over the precipice with no sign of anyone having a plan for our rescue.
It’s all very well for the Brexiteers to say “We won!”, but what did they win, we ask ourselves? There appears to be no evident benefit at all - unless you can’t live without a blue passport!
I admit to being one of the ‘dont knows’ at the time of the referendum, but surely everyone can see that to leave at the moment, with no deal and no proper plans, is the height of folly.

On other matters, like most of us Gransnetters, I’m well stricken in years, and have lived through many Governments of various shades and persuasions. On the whole they weren’t too bad, any extremism from either side being rapidly shouted down.

Unfortunately with the present mob we have graft and corruption on an industrial scale, the London property market has become the money-laundering centre of the world, and the nation’s wealth is being stashed offshore to evade rightful taxation. Rather than being governed by elected politicians, we appear to have a de facto ruler in the grubby shape of Rupert Murdoch and his gutter press.
As well as this corporate greed and crime, we have poverty and deprivation at a level unseen since the 1930s, education is deprived of funding, our welfare system is broken and we are losing our beloved NHS.

I am very afraid for the future, and particularly concerned for my children and grandchildren.
Those who are reasonably well off are threatened, the less prosperous are surely doomed, and only the über wealthy seem to be thriving.

Who is to blame for all this, and what is the cure?
I’ll leave you to think on this and shall keep my rather radical opinions to myself!

sandelf Thu 17-Jan-19 11:28:28

Well I support May - she is doing a good job. Had to go through this phase to get 'our' governors to take a serious look at what they want for the country. Until now they have never accepted the referendum. God save us all from 'charismatic leaders' - no no no.
