Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

They would Maggie

Maggiemaybe Sun 21-Apr-19 08:45:21

True, Annie, though many might have preferred spending time with their families at Easter.

The police whose leave was cancelled will benefit come pay day.

The most important conclusion for ourselves is: Eat much less meat and dairy products. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce our personal carbon footprint and to generally reduce our personal negative impact on the environment.

This doesn’t mean everyone has to go vegetarian or vegan, but if you do eat meat then eat less, make it go further, and try to have a couple of meat free days a week. There are some wonderful vegetarian recipes.

Cows (ruminants) account for 1/3 of the methane in our air and it traps heat for longer.
It's 23 times more harmful than CO2.
Cattle take up 1/3 of the land on earth and that includes land given over to produce cattle feed.
A petrol car driven for 12,500km emits as much CO2 as 1 cow per year.
It's a catch 22 situation as more land is razed worldwide to allow grazing for yet more cattle.

If these people think climate change is simply man made then the answer is simple- get rid of the humans and the planet will bounce back again. As an experiment, maybe keep a few of the more primitive peoples e.g. in the Amazon Basin and see how long it takes for mankind to get out of control again.

Nah, finish the lot off straight away; that's definitely the best solution. Last person, switch off the lights and do remember to let all those budgies, rabbits, lions etc. out of their cages first so they all have a fighting chance.

I think amybe they’ve all gone to smoke “wacky baccy” in Hyde Park ..... groovy man .

Great grin I did say your grandson looked a lovely lad by the way.

We disagree on methods and are probably both hysterical grin but agree climate change needs immediate and serious action??

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 22:37:53

mycat Yeah. You cuddle up with me. We'll be alright. ?

Urmstongran Sat 20-Apr-19 22:06:12

I think they’ll all go home soon. The end of the Easter break (well, not for students, teachers and the retirees!) but the good weather won’t last and when the rain comes next week they’ll disperse.

Activists are very well organised these days. Social media keeps them in touch with the latest news and plans for disruption.

Just a shame it’s costing us taxpayers so much in the extra police reinforcements and the tow costs for the pink boat, plus the NHS staff sorting out the super glue fools.

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 21:59:40

I could be hysterical mind!

Going for a lie down with Gonegirl!wink

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 21:45:22

Stop dancing and skateboarding prancing and prattling and piss off home. Stop lying about your lives and patronising Londoners. You all fly! Probably far more then most. You all drive and consume.

It’s fine we all do. We all need to address this but really you are coming across as massive twats. Pack up go home and grow up.

Let ordinary people live they lives. And let’s all come together to target this climate change emergency

Skate boarding and dancing doesn’t actislly equate with an emergency really does it.

Grow up

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 21:36:58

An I the only one feeling!

For the Love of god grow up!!!!! Seriously just grow up!!!!!!

and the UK is following France and banning them by 2040

Costa Rica - Costa Rica has been operating on a deficit since 2009. 22% of Costa Rica’s revenue comes from taxing the auto industry, and a large portion of that goes to protection of forests and other forms of conservation. This could result in a heavy financial loss for their already strained financial situation, but rethinking how they get their money could resolve their issues over time.

But well done to them - short-term suffering for long-term gain.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 20:10:31

Norway is banning the sale of fossil fuel driven cars by 2025. Costa Rica by 2021!

GabriellaG54 Sat 20-Apr-19 20:00:01

The whole thing is distinctly unedifying and typical of these kind of demonstrations, to which many who are not true CC activists are attracted.
The mess that has been left on Waterloo Bridge and elsewhere and the mess that will be left following the cannabis jamboree in Hyde Park (where many activists have joined the cannabis crowd) means that police are having to remove their detritus so that the rest of us can go about our business.
We in the UK are only too aware of climate change and are, as others have said, doing our best to change our habits to minimise the impact on our planet.
I saw the recent BBC programme which showed the devastating impact of logging and other deforestation.
It's a sobering outlook but contrast the purported aim of the CC rally with their lifestyles and know they are hypocrites of the first water.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 19:59:04

A parliamentary committee described our government's plans for banning the sale of petrol cars as "vague and unambiguous". There is no reason we should have to wait until 2040 or later. Make them concentrate their minds and stop waffling.

Jabberwok Sat 20-Apr-19 19:19:01

Our government IS doing its level best and is deeply aware of climate change,as are ALL UK politicians ,but nothing can be done overnight or with the stroke of a pen! Demonstrate outside offending Embassies,a lot of whom don't give a toss, do something positive in countries that seem to have cloth ears, badger politicians to make representation to these countries, but DONT disrupt the daily lives of ordinary citizens who frankly can do very little and are powerless to promise you anything to alleviate a problem you're causing that 8they've done nothing to deserve!

Joelsnan Sat 20-Apr-19 19:16:31

Suffragets not Sufferagets..doh! Sorry.

Joelsnan Sat 20-Apr-19 19:14:46

Gonegirl
But as mentioned...they are preaching to the converted.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 19:01:15

I don't think you can expect ordinary people to go to other countries and demonstrate to change foreign governments. But they do have the right to endeavour to influence their own elected government. Don't you agree?

Joelsnan Sat 20-Apr-19 18:12:02

I don't think you can equate this climate demonstration to the efforts of the Sufferagets. What the Sufferagets were campaigning for was a single cause at a national level that could be resolved also at a national level, Global Warming is a Global issue that cannot be cured by individual nations. We do not see Sufferagets demonstrating and causing issues in London because another nation does not give women a vote. If there was any militancy to be done on behalf of votes for women it would happen in the country denying the vote.
It should be the same in UK and the many other Western Countries that are well aware of Global warming and taking necessary steps to alleviate it.
Those demonstrating should be educated. Instead of blaming their forebears in UK for 'supposedly' ruining their future. Potentially (and through already implemented initiatives) these people will have better lives than their parents and grandparents.
If these demonstrators were serious then they should be taking their demonstrations to failing countries and bring their capitals to a standstill. Rather than bringing London to a standstill they should all row over to South America where they are clearing the rainforest, Emma could meet them there (fewer airmiles). Others could take a clipper boat catching the trade winds to China and bring Beijing to a halt.
Preaching to the converted does not make for an effective campaign.

crystaltipps Sat 20-Apr-19 17:35:50

I didn’t say everyone. I can tell on here that many are intolerant of any kind of protest or march especially if it involves students or anything vaguely left wing. It’s interesting to read contemporary letters to the Times about the suffragettes/ they were loudly criticised as not representing ordinary women who were too busy to vote, too ugly to get a husbands etc. They used similar sit down tactics.

Jabberwok Sat 20-Apr-19 17:13:43

Well I don't!

crystaltipps Sat 20-Apr-19 15:45:31

I’m an ordinary Londoner and I support them as do thousands of others.
