Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

Can someone please explain...I keep hearing celebrities (Emma Thompson latest) saying our generation has failed our children re global warming.
In my childhood we all had coal fires, our factories, were powererd by mainly coal our gas and electricity was derived from coal or other fossil based fuel, this as a result of generations before us. Our generation has cleaned up most these. We had returnable milk and pop bottles and our own shopping bags, I could go on. I should imagine many of our generation are eco aware. Why are we to blame? BTW Emma Thompson flew over from LA to take part in the London demonstrations to praise those taking part and blame the older generation.
Sadly until places like India, China, Russia and other countries start effectively tacking their industrial CO2 emissions and we find less polluting forms if transport worldwide then these demonstrations are nothing but a single raindrop it needs a torrent to clean up.

How many of you live perfect lives?
I don't think that anyone can lead a totally perfect life though many try their best.
Do you?

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 14:48:54

gillybob you seem determined to make light of global warming. Do you really not care what sort of planet your children's children inherit? Bit short sighted think.

Callistemon Fri 19-Apr-19 14:47:35

It is not one extreme or the other for most people crystaltipps, although you seem to be trying to make it that.
Many of us do grow their own, try to live a plastic free lifestyle and reduce their own carbon footprint, but think that there may just be better ways to get the message across to politicians who are now on their Easter recess and lobby those governments which are not really tackling the issue at all because their leader may be a denier.

crystaltipps Fri 19-Apr-19 14:40:34

How are you so certain that all these protesters aren’t really interested in the issue? That they are just middle class layabouts who obviously don’t believe in the cause because some of them may haven take the odd flight? What if some of them do grown their own, try to live a plastic free lifestyle and reduce their own carbon footprint, are you going to point and sneer at them? I saw a vicar being carted off by the police from the demo, she must have been all of 80, was she just a hypocrite out for a jolly? Don’t tar everyone with the same brush just because you don’t like their hair/ clothes whatever. How many of you live perfect lives?

I think they will not disrupt Heathrow any more because if they do they know they will be arrested and they will face much harsher punishment than those on the main protest.

gillybob Fri 19-Apr-19 14:26:14

They’re probably all worried that they will be called out as the hypocrites many of them are, when they splash their holiday photos all over FB !

DH has designed an elastic plane which flies over our office so could be the future . Now if we could just get an elastic band long enough...... wink

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 13:36:34

I see the protesters have said there will be no further disruption to Heathrow or any airport.

Guessing they see the irony of Emma’s flight. At least they have that much sense

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 13:32:58

And less of the hectoring and finger pointing please.

It’s quite ok to be just as worried and passionate about issues like climate change but feel these protests are selfish and wrong

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 13:31:16

Sorry I meant I am not put off by the issue!

Bloody autocorrect

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 13:30:06

I am not out of the issue if climate change of course not it’s a massive issue.

I am however put off the protesters methods and their selfish reckless disregard for other people’s jobs and lives.

Callistemon Fri 19-Apr-19 13:21:00

Some grandparents fly to another country to see their families, , Emma Thompson flies to America for the Oscars , far more important
grin
I suggested to DH that he build a sailing ship so that we could visit our family but I then got a lecture on conserving the forests and how we should be planting more trees.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 13:00:33

We must hope they get a move on with the electric powered planes they showed on last night's programme.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 12:59:37

Yes Urmstongran, I have that thought too. But I guess we can't really expect them not to travel. Would be a sad old world if we all starting looking in on ourselves.

GS is going to US for a World Scout Rally in July. I will suggest he gets a rowing boat.

Urmstongran Fri 19-Apr-19 12:56:30

Actually, as an aside - I thought the young ‘uns said they were against Brexit because they wanted to travel, do they intend swimming the channel then walking?
?

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 12:55:29

They've had long enough to think.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 12:54:59

These demos could very well bring forward a zero emission time, by encouraging politicians the like to cut out the talking and show some action.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 12:49:34

You have no right to be "put off" Mycatisahacker. It's your planet too. And that of your children and your grandchildren.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 12:47:45

I don't believe these demonstrations would lose sympathy for the cause. People would have to be pretty small-minded and selfish for that to happen. The cause is bigger than all of us.

janipat Fri 19-Apr-19 12:47:41

crystaltips you say don't bother criticising individuals, but surely nobody wants to be lectured by hypocrites? Isn't that what we often criticise individual MPs for, saying one thing while doing the opposite themselves? Of course the whole issue is much bigger than these individuals, but I seem to recall thatCameron's "we're all in it together" has garnered much derision, not least because the high moral stance wasn't followed through. Nobody's saying they have to be perfect, but they should at least be doing their utmost to fulfil the message they're preaching.

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 12:46:26

crystaltipps

Only if I feel I am being patronised. wink

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 12:45:45

Thing is people are aware of this issue and do care and are willing to make changes like less plastic etc.

But when you have mass disruptions on this scale and gleeful looking rioters dancing in the streets while their actions are causing massive upset and job losses and you have celebrities who fly more times in a year than most of us do in a life time lecturing us all it’s very off putting.

crystaltipps Fri 19-Apr-19 12:10:20

mycat are you so rude in rl?

crystaltipps Fri 19-Apr-19 12:08:22

namsnanny they said the same about civil rights activists and the suffragettes.

Namsnanny Fri 19-Apr-19 11:33:15

A bunch of attention seeking nincompoops full of virtue signaling selfishness!! If they all practised what they preached well done. But no such luck!!
