Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

So far the police are in control at Terminal 2 & 3 where the few protesters are outside and surrounded so as not to cause any disruption.

Why is it being assumed that anyone who doesn't support the protesters doesn't care about climate change? I fully support the message but I don't think they are going about gaining support the right way. For any change to take place the support of the general public is needed - this action will have the opposite affect.

Actually I was a bit mean there. It really doesn’t matter what they wear.

It’s good that people care enough to heighten our awareness and remind our politicians to do the right things by our planet. Sadly, money and big business runs the world, celebrities hop on and off planes like we use buses and consumerism is the new religion so change will be incrementally slow.

I am hoping that David Attenborough last night will have more impact although I think he was preaching to the converted.

Urmstongran, blame the messengers but ignore their message poppy

Urmstongran Fri 19-Apr-19 08:18:45

Some of them look like ageing hippies. What’s with the ‘Ban the Bomb’ earrings one lady (about 70y) was wearing? They’re all having a renaissance. Have you seen their clothes? Retro from the 1960’s!

And seriously, super gluing your hand to the pavement? I couldn’t do that. What if she needs a pee?? Maybe someone in her group has a tube of something to ‘unstick’ her?

The suffragettes were loudly criticised for being a load of posh women with nothing better to do, they were arrested and imprisoned - this rings some bells here. History was on their side though. Hopefully the same with these protesters.

I don't shop at Primark.I'm not vegan although have cut down on meat considerably and eat it only a couple of times a week.I reduce, reuse, recycle and always have because I hate wasting anything.I care passionately about wildlife ,nature and the future of our planet.I have solar panels,an electric car.I still feel powerless. In some ways I applaud anyone drawing attention to climate change. I'm not a natural protester.Plus I'm self employed and simply couldn't take off for a few days in London without seriously annoying my customers and damaging my business.
I'm sure a lot of ordinary working people in London believe Climate change is a problem. But still need to get that bus to work or their bills won't get paid at the end of the month. And Emma Thompson stepping off a plane from L.A. and spouting forth does nothing to help ER as far as I'm concerned.By far our best local councillor is from the Green Party. They get my vote.
And personally I don't begrudge David Attenborough' flights around the world to bring the wonders of nature into my home.Seeing things on TV I would never see in my lifetime in reality ,highlighting how precious our planet is.I can accept that.I think of him as a natural world ambassador. It is his job to inform us.Most of his lifetimes work was done before even he knew the massive impact our lifestyles were having.

janipat vegans are always getting bashed for their choices . So it will be “oh those protesters are just layabout hippy vegans who are just having a jolly, none of them care about the environment really so I can just ignore what they are saying. They should be shopping at Primark and having a life like me.” That’s the message I’m getting from you guys. I say hats off to the peaceful, at least they are bringing the most important issue out there. The fact that a lot of people will just criticise them for what they are wearing/ eating etc in order to ignore the issue is sad.

Glad none of mine look like the great unwashed.
Many of them look like 70s hippies.

Well can I add as I completely disagree with this action GoneGirl your grandson looks a lovely lad.

But please have a conversation.

Not about climate change but about the immediate problem of job losses! About those not paid unless they work?

The carers who can’t care and the disabled who need to drive.

He will understand and hopefully take on board

Go home now and let London get back to work.

Gonegirl Thu 18-Apr-19 22:08:51

Doubt if he cares too much about washing.

Gonegirl Thu 18-Apr-19 22:08:14

They have compost toilets.

Gonegirl Thu 18-Apr-19 22:06:42

Gabriella he's still at school, doing his A levels.

janeainsworth Thu 18-Apr-19 22:06:11

janipat veganism isn’t necessarily the answer.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 18-Apr-19 21:54:42

Gabriella......hadn’t considered their ablutions? Hopefully they will clear up/recycle their debris.

GabriellaG54 Thu 18-Apr-19 21:41:37

As long as they don't leave any mess whatsoever.
BTW.. have they organised a toilet block or are they using the bushes?
Getting washed?

GabriellaG54 Thu 18-Apr-19 21:37:26

Does he work or is he at uni Gonegirl?

janipat Thu 18-Apr-19 21:13:50

crystaltips why on earth would anyone bash someone for being vegan? It's not something that affects or impacts on anybody else, but is so much better for the planet.

We do not exist in isolation, and no matter how much we may think our decisions are the right ones, the impact they make on others can't just be dismissed with a shrug.

Gonegirl Thu 18-Apr-19 21:06:51

Daughter is trying out some vegan recipes! I bought her the Bish Bash Bosh book for Xmas. grin

Gonegirl Thu 18-Apr-19 21:02:17

janipat when did I actually say, or insinuate that? My GS is focussed on the environment. He is in the Marble Arch part of the demo. He certainly doesn't want to harm anyone, and he is not doing so.

And now, if you don't mind, I don't want to discuss this you anymore.

crystaltipps Thu 18-Apr-19 20:51:24

Lots of them are vegan actually but they’ll get bashed for that no doubt.

crystaltipps Thu 18-Apr-19 20:50:18

It iscwrong to say that “millions” can’t get to work. Probably no one cannot get to work even if it takes them a wee bit longer, on the other hand it’s great to walk down Oxford and Regents Street without any traffic. Brings to the fore how there is just too much traffic. The atmosphere is positive. The protesters are peaceful and there’s no violence towards the police, unlike other protests. Oh but maybe it’s too middle class.

janipat Thu 18-Apr-19 20:46:21

Gonegirl are you saying that your grandson and his fellow protestors are aware that they are hurting some of the poorest ( and probably least polluting) people and their families, but don't actually care?
Some of the posts on here are beyond ludicrous. Criticise the methods these protestors are employing and you're obviously one of the worst polluters and don't care about the world? There is absolutely no logic behind such statements.
One of the easiest things any individual can do to make a difference is to go vegan, are these protestors willing to do that? Somehow I doubt it.
