Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

She did win the peace prize - am I missing something?

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 20:06:48

Oh, you do worry about a lot of young people don't you mycat. It must be very hard for you.

And you reckon notentirely is being dramatic. grin

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 20:04:41

By the way Malala goes to my old school in Birmingham so very proud of her

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 20:03:29

notentirely

You clearly haven’t and maybe have a lie down or a wine you sound very dramatic and very late to the thread but welcome

I was so please Malala didn’t win the peace prize as although she deserved it I was worried she would be in the public eye too much.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 19:58:44

What do you think she's going to do then?

notentirelyallhere Wed 24-Apr-19 19:53:41

I'm going to go to bed really worried about her because conventional education in a school, head down for 18 years is the way to go for sure........most entrepreneurs did that (not)!

Callistemon Wed 24-Apr-19 19:51:47

You don't know that, though Gonegirl

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 19:50:22

Of course she'll pursue her education. Why wouldn't she?

Apart from Friday afternoons.

notentirelyallhere Wed 24-Apr-19 19:46:43

I think we're on the same page Gonegirl!

Callistemon Wed 24-Apr-19 19:46:31

I hope that this young woman will be able to pursue her education like Malala, if that is what she chooses to do.
She is still young, she is passionate and has much to offer, but I hope that this does not become too much for her too soon.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 19:45:31

Under developed?! Oh, it's getting really laughable now. hmm

All turning into childcare experts now are you? hmm

notentirelyallhere Wed 24-Apr-19 19:44:00

urmstongran and cathacker I did indeed read your posts and I can't believe that you can go on and on about someone you haven't met on the basis of things you think are universal about people with autism and young adults of 16. What have you done in your lives to equal what she has done so far in her young life? Who knows where she will go next. Malala Yousafzai has done well in hers.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 19:43:25

Gove has been very impressed with Greta's message.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 19:40:06

notentirelyallthere Yes!!! (Punches air)

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 19:39:01

The village idiot and the unpleasant squire

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 19:37:22

Bloody hell If I had to meet Dianne and Gove I would pack up too.

Poor bastards grin

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 19:13:16

urmstrongran

Well put absolutely

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 18:59:00

Who was ranting?

Don’t think you have read the posts notentirely

Urmstongran Wed 24-Apr-19 18:30:59

I don’t think we’re ranting notentirelyallhere

I think some of us are concerned that although she is 16y old she is on the autism spectrum and has suffered severe depression in the recent past. She is under developed for her age because she had serious food issues.

She has embraced a good cause and that’s highly commendable. But there are concerns for her future mental health as she is almost ‘too focused’ on this to the detriment of all else.

notentirelyallhere Wed 24-Apr-19 18:17:15

As I understand it, it's ending tomorrow because Michael Gove is going to meet them and also Diane Abbot.

Why are some people SO cynical? Why do some people think ranting about other people's lives is acceptable? Ranting about a person you don't know and have never met and ranting about a 16 year old. A person of 16 is not a child and can make their own decisions. Mind your own business comes to mind or rather, what pushes your buttons needs looking at in the privacy of your own home.

I've just seen this posted by someone working with XR, don't suppose it will convince the sceptics but here it is anyway:

Saw some fake news about the litter left by XR activists. Quite the opposite in fact! We are separating and recycling, no rubbish left by us at all.
The litter seen in Hyde Park was the result of the 420 Festival last Saturday 20 April when tens of thousands of people descended on Hyde Park armed with booze, weed, and picnics ... which they left behind. I know because I was there talking to some people, raising awareness of the International Rebellion. The 420 ravers wandered into the XR area at Marble Arch and brought their booze etc with them. It was what it was.
All the XR sites are booze and drug free zones and are carefully and thoughtfully managed. We DO NOT litter, nor do we engage in verbal or physical violence.

But also some working on this problem were also held up. Not many people working in the renewable energy industry supports her. They understand the problems.

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 18:06:56

It’s ending tomorrow. Need a few days to do the washing before schools back grin

Gillybob:

"Stopping the public from getting to and from work or going about their daily tasks is NOT going to win support."

Still less is extinction of civilised amenities(including breathable air and drinkable water) going to win support.

A choice between two evils. Some people's 'daily tasks' is to amass wealth at the expense of the natural environment and ordinary people.

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 17:38:33

Ok but don’t you slightly feel uncomfortable watching her and worry what the media will say about her?
