Why isn't anybody surprised they have done so well in the council elections?
There are reports that there has been an unprecedented amount of spoiled ballot papers.
The Lib Dem = Remain
The Brexit Party = Leave
These will be the two big beasts in the next GE!
I sincerely hope you are right Urmston.
The Lib Dems did well in our area. They are so active at local level, throughout the year, canvassing and replying to queries. At Christmas time they even pop little notes through the door thanking residents for Christmas lights in the garden which brighten the area and bring joy (maybe?) to the not so agile or housebound and neighbours generally. (We do have lots of pensioners in our area - we have joined their ranks!)
I let it be known to our Councillor that I voted for Brexit, and appreciated remaining in the EU was what Lib Dems were about, but mentioned how good they were in our ward regarding looking after the concerns of locals.
I will never vote Labour - it has lost its way with Corbyn ditching all his principles over the EU, (shame on him!) and hard left Momentum being in control - and the Conservative government's handling of Brexit - and May's duplicity in keeping us tied to Brussels - has finished off the Conservative party everywhere, for the time being I imagine.
Time for the Lib Dems to shine, but only because Labour and the Conservatives have messed up. They still do not inspire at a national level. You couldn't make it up.
Let's not forget that the tories didn't win the 2017 GE either. They're only in government because the DUP support them.
It was good to see UKIP losing so many seats despite predictions of them making huge gains.
LibDem could make real progress in a GE especially if they could link with that other new party of independents.
yes we all know what happened in the 2017 election labour didn’t win
I think some Corbyn worshippers take defeat as victory.
Look labour did better then just like the Lib Dem’s are now because people are mightily pissed off with the government. No one wanted that election and the Tories were punished.
Framilode; I did vote for Labour in the end because there were no LibDem/Green/ Change candidates here and the people standing assured me they were staunch remainers. I think people that voted Labour for that reason need to write to any winning candidate and tell them why they voted for them. I'm still being told by the media that my Labour vote at the last election was a pro Brexit one whereas it was to stop May having a huge majority and being able to push through any old unsavoury policy that she wanted.
Oh MO that would be the ‘Portillo’ moment
The Lib Dems were punished for their involvement with the Coalition, but now this is water under the bridge, the shambolic state of the two main parties has made the electors forget all about that.
It is significant that the main gains have been in the Liberal heartlands, where electors are returning to the party they have backed for years, which is more secure than Lib Dems being randomly returned in Conservative and Labour heartlands as a protest vote.
I am delighted that my own council has returned to Lib Dem control, even if my village remained solidly Conservative.
Love the news about Rees-Moggs local council. Somerset and the West country has always been a Liberal heartland. How on earth did JRM even get selected for a constituency down there, let alone get elected. perhaps at the next election........?
I don’t think Grandad said Labour did win ab but some of us remember that the result was a bit of a surprise to say the least. Even a Tory can concede that.
I voted LD and so did my husband because we are remainers. I would have more respect for the Labour Party if they took a definite position on brexit and stopped playing both sides against the middle.
The Labour Party won't win an elec tion with just their northern (leaver) base. They need to pick up seats from the rest of the country.
Looking at where the votes are being won, I think that you could argue that they are picking up a large remain vote.
Yes we know what happened in the 2017 General Election,
Labour didn’t win.
Well, Theresa May called the 2017 General Election after the Labour Party had not done well just prior to that in local and Bye-elections.
May believed she would "wipe out" the Labour Party in that General Election and dramatically increase her majority in the House of Commons.
And we all know what happened then.
Roll on the next election and the sooner the better.
Rees Mogg constituency?
Lib Dem’s 67% of the vote
How glorious!
I don't really understand why anyone would expect Labour to have swept the board.
Since the last General Election, there have been many claims that all votes for both Labour and Conservatives in that election indicated support for Brexit. I am sure I'm not alone in thinking that similar claims would be made about these elections, even though they are only for local councils.
I am sure that many leave voters, those whose interest in politics doesn't begin and end with newspaper headlines, have taken this on board and avoided voting for either of those parties for that very reason, even if in normal times they would have supported one of them wholeheartedly.
I agree maryeliza
The lib dems do well in council elections not as a protest vote but because they are good at being local councillors - ime they really engage with local people, communicate, answer emails. Of course they are not perfect but who is? I think their soul is in local community politics and if we had a different system of the relationship between local and central government, they would really flourish
Massive gains for anti Brexit parties throughout the country and yet the news media is saying people are voting against Labour and Conservatives because they just want them to deliver Brexit and they aren't. Oh and no mention of Boris talking about voting in London because he didn't realise there was no voting in London [quickly deleted from his twitter account; lying scoundrel...
]….
I can’t see why people can’t see he’s toxic to voters.
Plenty Gilly
dragonfly
Maybe but my view is disgust at the main parties rather then a huge change in voters to remain.
Polls suggest most people havnt changed their minds.
The Lib Dem’s often do well in council elections as a protest vote. GE is different.,
Of course labour should have swept the board. They havnt because of JC.
I also think in a GE the Lib Dem and the people’s vote party, can’t renenber their name, will split that vote. They need to amalgamate to get anywhere but too many egos in the people’s vote camp.
No that is the problem Gilly - they need a new leader and even then they will not at the moment win a GE but surely the result yesterday is indicative of how the country is feeling.
With that clown as leader the LP will NEVER win a GE !
As a lifetime Labour voter I could never vote for the LP under his leadership and I think there are plenty others who feel the same !
Jura I agree it certainly puts in doubt that the will of the people is to come out of Europe.
Labour should have stormed through with wins throughout England
I bet not Annie! Labour will not do well with JC at the helm.
