Horrified by Alabama Abortion law

I am horrified by the new ruling that makes abortion illegal in the state of Alabama with not even exceptions for rape or incest victims .

The only exception is if the mothers life is endangered . Am I right in thinking this new law puts women back 100 years with no ability to make decisions about their own bodies ?

What are your thoughts ?

My first child was conceived whilst I was “on the pill” taken diligently, Husband and I decided we could afford bills, baby and myself taking a career break.

I then had an IUD (coil) after a while I told Husband I thought I was pregnant we went to GP (locum) who said it was impossible. I miscarried the night before we were due to fly back to UK. Went from Gatwick to A & E spent a week in hospital. Thankfully due to the NHS I was able to have two more babies.

The point I am trying to make is contraception can and does fail, and therefore legal abortion should always be available to whoever needs it.

Missouri is now banning abortions after 8 weeks of pregnancy. A normal pregnancy is counted as 40 weeks in duration, starting from the date of a woman's last period. Therefore, for part of those first two weeks, she isn't pregnant until ovulation and conception have occurred. These laws are just getting more and more ridiculous, promulgated by ignorant and ill-informed people who seem to be mostly men.

GG

If she’s middle of the road God help us! Ludicrous.

Totally agree with your post and that is why abortion on demand free and easily accessible is vital for women world wide.

It is very easy for us to argue and split hairs about this subject but it should be seen in its wider context. Sex education is sporadic and sometimes non-existent in many southern American states. Some parts of some states have no gynaecologists at all. All medical care is massively expensive and there have been changes to access to contraception through Medicaid. Georgia wants to ban any form of contraception that prevents implantation, ie. IUDs and oral contraceptives, on the spurious grounds that these are abortifacients and, no doubt, other states will follow. Donald Trump has invented a new condition that he calls post-birth abortion, causing ignorant people to become outraged about women who perform this [non-existent] act.

Of course it is better to use an efficient, though not guaranteed infallible form of contraception rather than to conceive and abort. First you have to understand about contraception and if your sex education class only informs you that you should just say no, you are going to be pretty ignorant. Then you need access to it and, if using oral contraceptives, you need to be responsible about taking it, but if there is no help from the medical profession, you may not understand those responsibilities. And so on and so on…

Mycat “middle of the road” is where annepl thinks she is. Dare I say maryeliza54 and I were taking the “p**s”

Mycatisahacker Thu 16-May-19 20:20:21

Is anyone else seeing ‘cissie and Ada’ grin arms folded gossiping and judging over the fence.

The posts are laughable if this wasn’t happening for real around the world.

It is not repeat not your business!!

Why on earth would you think you can poke your judgy nose into other women’s choices?

Iam64 Thu 16-May-19 19:56:19

annepl, how is it your business "if a little baby is aborted for no good reason".
What does that mean?

annep1 Thu 16-May-19 19:49:49

Its my business if a little baby is aborted for no good reason. Incidentally I am not discussing the US laws. I am discussing abortion. And MaryEliza I vote middle of the road in Northern Ireland. I am not a religious bigot I think some folk here need blood pressure medication. Byee!

Mycatisahacker Thu 16-May-19 19:42:25

Agree I know many women who have aborted and all without exception feel it was the right choice for them at the time.

I hope these exclusion zones around clinics continue to be instituted too stay nutter free bully free areas

Mycatisahacker Thu 16-May-19 19:40:33

Treating women as incompetent children to be directed and forced to carry unwanted babies! Just wombs not brains.

Yeuk! Shameful

Iam64 Thu 16-May-19 19:34:00

paddynan -thanks so much for the comment from mums net. Those young women are closer to this issue than we are in that most of them can get pregnant, most of us can't.

anneal - I find your comment "I know someone who had an abortion twice because she hadn't finished university. Now that's disgusting". - disgusting. None of us can claim to know the reasons behind the decision to have an abortion. What we do know is it's unlikely to be a decision reached lightly. I know many women who reached that decision and none of them regret it. They may regret the circumstances they were in when that decision was made but it doesn't mean their lives have been wrecked - which is the nonsense peddled by many pro lifers.

Exactly pinkquartz

Keep your nose out of other women’s choices lifestyles and bodies.

pinkquartz Thu 16-May-19 19:18:35

Annepl there is a lack of commonsense in some of your arguments.
You are very judgmental to be so concerned about another woman having had 2 abortion before finishing university..... it is not your business.
to me it is that simple.

Mycatisahacker Thu 16-May-19 19:09:25

Nana me too!

I find your views on Forced birthing as cruel and as vile as FGM.

You would actually force a 12 year old rape victim to give birth? That’s the action of a monster.

paddyann Thu 16-May-19 19:09:11

sorry worth MORE than the rights of a rape victim

paddyann Thu 16-May-19 19:08:42

I just read this on Mumsnet "what has the world come to when the sperm of a rapist is worth less than the rights of a rape victim" ...kind of sums it up !

Mycatisahacker Thu 16-May-19 19:06:32

Forced birthers are disgusting. You are a force birther so if the cap fits wear it.

I find it perfectly acceptable for anyone to have one or more abortions for any reason that doesn’t concern me or you or anyone and quite frankly having an abortion so you can finish uni studies and gain a degree sounds a very sensible choice actually.

Jane10 Thu 16-May-19 18:59:33

?
To use a phrase of my mother's
'I could shake these people till their teeth rattle'!
It won't make any difference of course. They're locked in their illogical and cruel beliefs. Now who else in current life and history think/ thought like them? Oh yes, the Taleban, ISIS, the nazis...
