Horrified by Alabama Abortion law

I have difficulty believing women are using abortion as a form of contraception! I had a friend who had an abortion and although it was what she wanted she was left deeply upset for a long time after. It seems highly unlikely that women would put themselves through that several times.

As I said previously, I wouldn't have had an abortion myself but that was my choice - all women should be free to chose. No-one wants to see the return of the "back street abortionist"

Here is a non frivolous reason for wanting an abortion:
Dont want to be pregnant.

What would a frivolous reason be?

Anti abortion types could legislate to PREVENT abortions (rather than drive them underground to punish women) by bringing in compulsary vasectomies to their state! Sperm could be stored for planned consentual pregnancies. Presumably all of these anti abortion men are either gay, celibate or have had vasectomies themselves if they are so commited to preventing abortions?

Lazi I’ve just read a very interesting article about how the new law in Georgia will impact men - apparently the state is very very hot on men paying child support and tracks them down, DNA tests them and makes them pay up. It also makes them pay towards ante and post natal care. I think the journalist was suggesting that once the ordinary Joe realised his one night stand could no longer get an abortion and the State was coming after him, he might have something to say about the new law. Interesting thought isn’t it?

I don't even know what 'abortion on demand' means. Am I to assume it means a woman wants an abortion without giving a reason? Surely every woman will have their reasons, even if they don't want to say so. Or is it because some reasons are more acceptable than others? It's like the Victorian deserving and undeserving poor.

I also find it very strange in this US states how once the resultant baby takes its first breath, no one gives a damn about them. Those people only care about them pre-birth.

I am against such a draconian Abortion Law, and indeed US have much higher infant mortality rates than UK. Not surprising really because the cost of having a baby is very expensive in the States, and I have read that private insurance will not cover certain aspects of ante natal and obstetric care. I do not know how poorer people with no insurance pay or what Obamacare covers. As usual it is the poor and disadvantaged who will suffer from this law. Well off women will always find a way. I saw first hand as a student nurse the terrible results of back street abortions prior to 1967 Abortion Act.

Georgia’s ‘heartbeat’ law has been signed by the Governor. None of this will stop until it gets to the Supreme Court

It has not been signed into law YET. Can be vetoed.

What’s a ‘frivolous ‘ reason? ‘Oh I’ve just bought a new dress and if I don’t have an abortion it won’t fit me? ‘. Here’s THE reason to have an abortion ‘ I want one’.

This is going back a bit but my great aunt was headmistress of a girls grammar school. Unbeknowst to anyone her brightest pupil became pregnant and managed to conceal the pregnancy from everyone. She gave birth to a stillborn child alone and then went out at night to bury the child. She was found dead beside the child in the morning. So tragic. An abortion would have saved her life.

Like most of you I am against abortion as contraception or for frivolous reasons. I do think however that early abortion should be available.

maryeliza I heard someone talking about the NI situation on the radio and they said that Westminster cannot legislate to make abortion legal in NI as healthcare is one of the devolved powers.

Obviously the fact that they have not had a functioning government for over 2 years is stopping any form of legislation in NI.

Yes well we have paved the way with how so many in the UK "forget" the women of NI when they think we are so progressive here..

If you look at the States which are most anti abortion you’ll find they have some of the highest infant mortality rates - that’s how much these hypocrites value the lives of babies - they won’t provide decent ante and post natal care for starters

But it’s not even about travelling to another state ( as if that were easy) it’s about overturning Roe v Wade so that abortion will not be available anywhere. And then they’ll come for us ( which they are doing already anyway).

Also consider who will be impacted most by these draconian laws. Will it be well-to-do middle class women with connections? Nope, it won't. They'll still be able to get what they want by paying their way.

It'll be the poor, the disadvantaged, those with no influence and who are already at the bottom of the heap who will bear the brunt of this.
