The IHRA working definition of Antisemitism is just that. It is not the law. I know of no other definition of racism or religious discrimination which includes the challenge to a political group or country as being discrimination and that is what many people have an issue with.

Lyndiloo free speech, the right to say what you believe to be true ? This means we all have the right to say what we believe to be true about anything, anyone ?

Anniebach your response to my post wasn't really relevant. (Unless that Peter Whoever had made that comment about Jews - which, of course would be anti-semetic, but if he did, I haven't heard of it.)

My posts have been about the right to say what you believe to be true, without being afraid of having labels stuck on you for thinking it. And, even worse, being suspended from your job for voicing your concerns.

In other words, Free Speech.

I canvassed for the referendum in Wales and England, what came up time and time again was - immigrants, reasons were not racist as I experienced it. Poor areas , few doctors, long waiting time to have an appointment, cash in hand being paid to immigrants, housing waiting lists why bring in more people here. This wasn’t racist , it was anger and frustration.

Anniebach, I agree that racism has always existed in Britain but incidents had reduced to historically very low levels around the time of the millennium.

However, as my post above demonstrates, I feel Brexit has increased tensions all round and brought about intolerance of people who hold opposing views to others in society.

We hear on this forum that Brexit has created disputes between families and often longtime friends. That situation can be even more magnified in workplace situations where stress may already exist.

Therefore whatever you may wish to believe Anniebach, Brexit has increased racism, harassment and bullying dramatically since 2016 and especially so in the last six to nine months in my experience.

It is not just in the Labour Party anniebach but all around us, and in that, it is the fact that it exists in both our major political parties that demonstrates to us all the real situation in the country.

There has always been racists , brexit hasn’t increased the numbers .

I experienced racism in the 60’s , went into a pub in England for a meal, my companion was a Black South African, my friend was wearing his dog collar , we were asked to eat our meal in a back room, I think if it hadn’t been for the dog collar we would have been told to leave.

Irish travellers, gypsies , experienced it.

Now there is racism but much is caused by anger and resentment, so perhaps not true racism.

GrannyGravy13, in response to your post @21:04 today, I have to say that racism, Harassment and Bullying is in every aspect of our lives in Britain and in some contexts, it can be much more serious than just the use of words.

Only this week one of the assignment team's from our company has been investigating a serious assault on a Polish worker at an engineering works.

The root cause investigation has proven that racial harassment of the EU worker had been going on for some time, and the assault took place when the Polish worker started giving back similar to what he was receiving.

The assault hospitalised the EU Worker, and three employees have now lost their jobs. The root cause investigation is still continuing as it may be that middle management at the plant was aware of the harassment but did nothing.

I state the above as undoubtedly Brexit has dramatically increased incidents such as that given in UK workplaces and throughout everyday life. In that, It is not confined to the Labour Party or the Conservative party or any other organisation, but as stated is to be found everywhere in our society.

In many cases it is just words as it is in Britain's political parties. However, in ever an increasing number of incidents it is becoming much more than words.

Those who use severe derogatory terms towards others in the Brexit debate should think seriously in regard to what they are bringing about.

Flipping heck .....should give into any form of racism sexism or ageism!!!

Oops .......and feel they have no place in politics nor should they be in day to day life.

As I have stated previously in this thread racism, harassment and bullying surround all of us in every corner of our society. Therefore, for those who wish to see the above iradicated perhaps they would care to comment on the below report taken from the Daily Express in regard to the above problems in the Conservative Party.

A Conservative peer claimed Home Secretary Sajid Javid is considered ‘too Muslim’ to be leader by some within the Conservative Party.

Tory peer and former Conservative Party Chair, Baroness Sayeda Warsi made the claim following a string of recent Islamophobic comments from some members of the party. The Conservative Party suspended 14 members over the alleged abusive remarks that were uncovered on social media. Following that news, Baroness Warsi insisted on BBC Newsnight that although Sajid Javid may try to “pander” to some within the party, he will never become the party leader.

She said: “There’s no doubt that he is a leadership candidate, but he should read the comments about him. “However much he panders to the right of our party, sadly the right of our party still believes he is far too Muslim to be leader.”

Baroness Warsi has also called for an internal inquiry into the problem and has called on senior Conservative figures to take the problem seriously. The Tory peer also confirmed that she had raised the issue three years ago but nothing was done to remedy the problem.

There is anti semetism in the Labour Party and there is proof. What would labour MP’s gain by saying they had suffered anti semetic abuse, and there are recordings of anti
semetic abuse .

It's a difficult complex issue isn't it, the whole racism/anti semitism/misogyny/homophobia etc etc. We all wish it was easy but it just isn't. We all have to work at it and that can only be a Good Thing - can't it?

I agree with all your points. My continuing worry is that though there are obviously issues that need to be addressed, if this is used as a political stick, by vested interests, it could have a backlash and the very people we want to protect could be affected. Just as there are people in all parties who would site others as stirring this up in order to avoid facing their problems, there are also people who are actually stirring things up for political gain too. Then there are the innocent people who don't deserve the outcome of that sort of politicking.

I think I would be including this in the diversity lessons (sorry teachers) as the things the children take home from school often teach more than the child.

I think both of those statements would be called out, Annie.

We have evidence of both types of abuse but to characterise either as 'a lot' brings with it the implication that it is extremely common in both cases. Which it isn't.

I think 'some' would be a more accurate and neutral description and less likely to be called out..
