(21 Posts)My first job was working in the NHS , paying the staff and can certainly say that every penny was accounted for.
Last year I had a temp job at the same hospital but different department and the changes over the years, the money wasted is astounding!
Some bright spark thought it was a good idea to outsource so much from the cleaners, to catering staff and many departments from physio to ambulances , mental health services are all provided by companies, often owned by ex NHS staff, with detriment effects as they never seem to have the same standards as the old in house staff had. The last one was the Patient Transport to and from home and hospital appointments which was absolutely appalling - from being run from an office in the hospital, in conjunction with the ambulance service , to an office in another county entirely, with absolutely no local knowledge! And don't forget the huge salaries paid to the Executive Officers !
Yes how the NHS was set up for the public by the public works and well for over 70 years. It was a cost effective system the envy of the rest of the world. It's only since changes brought in first by Thatcher to privatise a Public Health Service then Labour Blair that economic problems occurred, by design. There are no faults blaming an older population foreigners etc using the NHS it was design to cope this scapegoating is used by government to mislead to blame. When the privatisation the sell off our NHS is what is their intended outcome by deceit. Lots of minsters have shares in private health care companies.
In fact, those who have the money and private healthcare, often get a lot more than they need- which is not necessarily good for them, strangely enough. We were discussing this with our GP (who is French) and a Swiss surgeon, just the other day.
lemong- 'When it was started up, the cradle to grave care was possible
And now it just isn’t, the population was smaller then and medical routines and research etc more basic.Older people didn’t generally live as long.Something will have to change.'
so, what do you suggest? We all know the answer to that, in the real world. Those who have money will get all the treatment they need or want- and those who do not, will not. There is NO money to be made on those who are sick, severely injured, the handicapped, and our group, the over 65s. ALL private systems are selective - like all insurances. Your house has flooded in the past - they won't insure you- same principle.
And yes GG54, it might concentrate the mind for some, for sure. Here in Switzerland where dentistry is so expensive, parents ensure that their kids do not eat too many sweets and brush their teeth religiously.
Other European countries do not have an NHS though, do they.Their citizens have insurance which pays the hospitals for their treatment. We treat all the better off and the poorer sections of society in our hospitals and GP and ambulance services. There is nothing exactly the same in Europe.
lemongrove Yes New Labour Blaire brought in PFI unessessarily and wasteful which brought massive debts the NHS had to pay paved the way for a break up sell off of our NHS, with deliberate underfunding since 2010 making hospitals fail doctors and nurses leaving land sold off. We have less beds and least money spent on NHS than other European countries.
Weren’t PFI’s brought in by the last Labour government?
That shows, surely, that the NHS could not cope as things were.
I think there have been enough instances highlighted in the media for us to know that the NHS does often waste money, but even if it didn’t, and prudently accounted well for every penny, there is now such strain on it that it couldn’t carry on as it is for a lot longer.

The NHS does not waste mone it's the PFIs that were brought in with huge debts to pay off and unnessary managers underfunding ready to carve it up and sell it off to America and have their insurance system brought in. This must not be allowed to happen. What needs to happen is our NHS renationalised publicly funded free at the point of use a cost effective health service as it always has been until PFIs
If people of all ages took care of their health a bit more, there may be less call on NHS services.
Obviously, I understand that some accidents, illnesses and disabilties are outside our control, but there is much we can do to mitigate risks to our health and wellbeing.
St Helier hospital is on the South London/Surrey borders, I used to live not too far from there. It’s a busy and well used hospital in a heavily populated area. I would think that it’s closure would mean patients travelling much greater distances for treatment and put huge strain on other hospitals too.
I think its in surrey not jersey, but thats not really the point, because all of us,wherever we live, are going to be affected as the nhs continues to be sold off to private companies bit by bit. They don't do this for the love if it, they are looking to profit, and just listen to trump talking about it. He thinks the nhs is on the table.... sadly, it probably will be.
The hospital is in St. Helier, Jersey - so not used by anyone not living in Jersy and not visiting there.
I recently stayed in Jersey for a few days - lovely place, but I'm not concerned about their hospital. Sorry. Contact the local media/council perhaps?
Sorry, I'm not on Facebook nor have any wish to be,but am certainly worried about the future of the NHS .
Couldn't see the video, perhaps because I don’t have Facebook. Not sure.
However would agree that the nhs is being sold off. Started slowly but it’s speeding up. Our local hospital is run by Virgin. I had no idea until recently. When you see ambulances with nhs writ large on them, look closely and you will see in small print ‘working with’. We should be very afraid.
