What do you think Labour MP Jess Phillips meant by her tweet? (Sun 09-Jun-19 09:50:50)
I think she is as entitled to her opinion as I am to mine POGS .
What goes on among "Labour colleagues", is for them to sort out. If I believed Labour was normalising anti-semitism it would affect the balancing act I do before I vote. However, the policies of the parties matter more to me than their internal wrangling - which is what I see this as.

Labour wins Peterborough
(229 Posts)I had missed the headlines when I switch on the radio this morning but there they were interviewing the man of the past again - Nigel Farage. To find out what had happened I had to go on-line.
I do think the BBC have been overwhelmed by the snake oil selling of Brexit. Yesterday I watched more of the anniversary of D Day and couldn't help but wonder why about a third of our country - those who actually voted to leave the EU - are so unpatriotic and backward looking.
At the centre of which party’s campaign Urmstongran, ?
I haven’t read of this
Seems there may have been dodgy practices going on at this recent by election ....
“Labour’s victory by just 683 votes over the Brexit Party in Peterborough was mired in controversy last week after The Mail on Sunday revealed claims that a convicted vote rigger was at the centre of the party’s campaign.
Cambridgeshire Police have since revealed they are investigating five complaints of electoral malpractice, including bribery.
Now election experts Democracy Volunteers have raised fresh concerns over the by-election.”
Oh dear.
Not good.
?
At the moment disappointed BP supporters are clutching at some rather fragile looking straws.
Just as well I'm not a BP supporter then
I would like to point out that being alarmed at the way the Labour Party is going at the moment does not automatically mean that a person supports the Brexit Party.
POGS I think Jess Philips is simply trying to gain attention for her dislike of Jeremy Corbyn. She wants a confirmatory vote and is not afraid of saying so. She is one of the few MPs who appear to be putting their constituents first. I wasn't keep on her when she seemed to be man bashing all the time but she has changed not only her looks but also her emphasis.

" Woke up to news of Peterborough win. Glad that Brexit Party didn't win and am in awe of my Labour colleagues who ran a tough campaign well. But the reality is I cannot be gleeful or proud as I'd want to be because of how it shows that antisemitism is becoming normal in the party. "
Her only other comment was on the presence of Tariq Mahmood at the count. I assume that this was not in any way illegal.. Are you suggesting that he slipped 600+ fraudulent postal votes into the votes to be counted without anyone noticing?
As far as I can ascertain we don't actually know how many postal votes were cast, what percentage of the votes cast were postal votes, or how many of them were cast for the Labour candidate. At the moment disappointed BP supporters are clutching at some rather fragile looking straws.
I think other Labour MPs are uneasy about her too - are they part of the McCarthyite witch hunt too?
If you re-read *petra's posts you will see her point, postal vote numbers aside. That has been clarified in posts above too.
And I am not offended on my own behalf Calistemon, but for all those lumped together by the most tenuous connection. That is what a prejudice looks like.
And petra has been corrected about the postal votes, she was wrong in the figure she quoted*Callistemon*. What else is there?
This feels like a McCarthyite witch hunt to me. Two slightly dubious actions in 5 years among all the thousands of interactions that Forbes must have had in that time are deemed sufficient to pronounce her to be anti-Semitic?
I think petra made her point quite clearly in her earlier posts, GracesGran about why this result could possibly be questionable.
I have a postal vote too (although I do not live in Peterborough) but I have not taken offence.
Do you live in Peterborough?

Don't hold your breath because you'll be waiting a long time.
I'm not expecting one. How can anyone explain pure prejudice, petra?

Bad habit this ‘like’ click, but didn’t read the comments.
Corbyn on a anti semetic site, ‘ yes I was on it but I didn’t read it.
Corbyn and the anti semetic wall mural which he ‘liked’
‘I didn’t look closely’

High!!! Exactly. So over two thirds of the population of Peterborough had a postal vote.
It stinks.
I have a postal vote petra. What are you suggesting about postal voters? Please explain before I take a great deal of offence.
I read that the new MP for Peterborough didn't say anything antisemitic but retweeted something without reading it. So she is saying she is not antisemitic, simply not very bright! Very worrying.
I don't know about "not very bright" she acted like a normal human being as far as I can see. She watched a video, liked and shared it. I have done it myself many times. What she did not read are the comments underneath and it turns out someone put something antisemitic on. Can you really be strung up like this for doing what most of us do? Could this be an attempt to stop the LP using social media? Could that be because they have been so successful at it?
Whoever wrote the antisemitic message should, of course, be taken to task. Do we know who they are? Are they members of the party? Can we see the evidence from the complainants?
Funny that Faragit didn’t complain about postal votes in the Euro election. Interesting article in New Statesman about how the Brexit Party are merely UKIP rebranded.

Has anyone else seen the photo of Tariq Mahmood standing by the count at the Peterborough by election?
He was jailed in 2008 for vote rigging ( for labour) in the Peterborough council elections. At the time he was a local Labour secretary.-
Not only he was convicted petra but a former Labour Mayor and another were found guilty of vote rigging in Peterborough ( not the only place).
Labour mayor of Peterborough Mohammed Choudhary was jailed , basically it was to do with postal voting, something that has been flagged up on more than one occasion in other places.
One of suspicions raised in Peterborough were over the number of postal votes and that was how the fraud was taken further for investigation.
Given the fact Peterborough was a leave constituency and the Labour MP Fiona Onasanya was found guilty of perverting the course of justice and given a jail sentence this should have been a clear fight between the Labour and Tory Party.
The fact the Brexit Party came second did not ' see off' the Brexit Party it made both Labour and the Tories lose votes and especially the Tory Party lost out big time.
As for the new Labour MP Union activist Lisa Forbes I think the well respected Labour MP Jess Phillips (respected when agreed with by some) hit the mark when she tweeted :-
" Woke up to news of Peterborough win. Glad that Brexit Party didn't win and am in awe of my Labour colleagues who ran a tough campaign well. But the reality is I cannot be gleeful or proud as I'd want to be because of how it shows that antisemitism is becoming normal in the party. "
Well said!
Hello Nonnie. I will try and find and try to post a link. What seemed to have happened is that someone saw the figure of 69% and postal votes and misunderstood.
I read that the new MP for Peterborough didn't say anything antisemitic but retweeted something without reading it. So she is saying she is not antisemitic, simply not very bright! Very worrying.
Would love to know more about the postal voting thing if anyone has a link
That makes more sense suzie
Susiewoozie
Thank you for that.
I couldn’t believe the 69% figure so did some research. It refers to the % of people who registered for a postal vote and actually used it not the % of votes cast that were cast via a postal vote.
