Preparing for No Deal

Well it seems that this is firmly back on the table, which will thrill some and horrify others.

What does no deal mean though?

It means leaving on the 31 October and beginning at ground zero. We will immediately enter WTO rules in all our trading activities throughout the world which means we will have to comply with our WTO schedule listing the tariffs with which we must comply.
We have said that we wouldn’t charge tariffs on most goods coming from the EU, but I am unclear how we could apply that rule to just the EU as surely we must comply with the most favoured nation, which means we must apply the same standards to every country?
However, our businesses who export will have tariffs imposed on their products making them less competitive than other businesses who trade under various trade agreements. Many farmers are expected to go out of business and where possible other businesses will move to the EU. We are seeing this process already.
The EU will of course immediately set up checks at the border.

The suicide rate amongst farmers is alarmingly high, the combination of long hours and isolation is just too much for some. Add to that any kind of profit is very hard to achieve and great many farms are supported by cash a wife earns. Livestock farmers in particular are badly affected because they are tied 7 days a week tending animals, it’s better if you only have crops, at least you have some time to work elsewhere.

'This situation is not about democracy it is about the Tory party tearing itself apart and the rest of us are going to go down with it.' Absolutely...angry

Magsymoo You are so right. Scary that people can't see that.

Magsymoo Thu 13-Jun-19 22:27:44

Nobody voted for a No Deal Brexit. Nobody voted to undo the Good Friday agreement and risk violence in Ireland again. This is not 'The will of the people'. I'm fed up with people telling me I'm undemocratic because I think leaving will be a disaster. This situation is not about democracy it is about the Tory party tearing itself apart and the rest of us are going to go down with it.

Dilly thank you for your honesty. Shame on those politicians who are assuring you that you knew what you were voting for. Did you see a sub section about agreeing to catastrophe in farming, nursing, social care?

jura2 Thu 13-Jun-19 20:53:28

Dilly, I am sure you are not the only one who thought the same. And who thought it would help the NHS greatly.

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 20:47:43

Dilly, good for you for being honest and sorry you are bewildered like myself and many others.

NFU President Minette Batters has described a "no-deal" brexit as Armaggedon!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:50:39

My heart goes out to the farmers who export most of their produce to the EU.

DillytheGardener Thu 13-Jun-19 19:45:23

I wish I understood what the heck is going on. I voted Brexit, but certainly didn’t vote for this mess. I had assumed they would have had a plan ready to keep our economy safe. Agriculture while everyone makes cracks about farmers being wealthier than they say, is hard. When prices are low, or bad weather affects animals, there are high suicide rates of male farmers, if there are issues post Brexit it will hit them hard. My family going way back we’re market gardeners and it’s a tough life. Heartbreaking. Glad my husband has a good pension and this won’t effect us too much.

Magsymoo Thu 13-Jun-19 19:32:02

Funny how so many Brexiters are so keen to 'take back control' and throw off the 'yoke' of the EU but then are happy to throw themselves into the arms of the WTO. At least we have a say in EU regulations, we have representation,. What say do we have in WTO regs? None.

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 19:28:23

excuse the spelling error earlier, many thanks.

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 19:26:11

I am not out of joint re BJ.

He is a liar.
He is a racist.
He is a philanderer.

These are facts, there is proof.

Ginny42 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:24:57

gonegirl Thanks for the link. Of course there are those who will say it's scaremongering and who wants to listen to experts? etc.

If we're alarmed imagine how concerned Rhodri Thomas QC and Anneli Howard must feel, as they know so much more about the realities of what we face.

I do hope I'm around long enough to fulfil a promise I made on GN in 2016 and that is, that when we're finally out of the EU and Britain is prospering as Brexiters predict, I will apologise to them and say, You were absolutely right to want to leave, I got it wrong.

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 19:23:00

remainers always asked for proof of leavers
What?

Elvive Thu 13-Jun-19 19:22:00

UG, I was referring to two separate comments you made, one about heat one about a beer with friends.

Of course people should be able to live their lives as they see fit but it feels smug when many are genuinely worried.

No, I did not intervene with the man I saw. I do a lot to help the disposed. Not virtue signaling, fact.

petra Thu 13-Jun-19 19:18:50

Urmstongran
Have sent you a PM.

GabriellaG54 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:08:27

no intention in outlining it on here (sic)
Ah! I was under the impression that remainers always asked for proof of leavers assertions so why no proof of your actions re homelessness etc?

GabriellaG54 Thu 13-Jun-19 19:03:28

Wow! Some people's noses are really put out of joint over Boris n Brexit...hence the barbed and nasty shots.
Never mind, we shall not be moved physically or emotionally.
Bottoms up, chin-chin...☀️????

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Jun-19 18:59:52

The ballot paper said leave or remain.

It didn’t specify with or without a deal.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 18:58:19

firecravker

Whitewavemark2 Thu 13-Jun-19 18:57:54

Quite a lot, in fact I am doing something at this minute, but I have no intention in outlining it on here as I said to gg54 it is none of your business.

Urmstongran Thu 13-Jun-19 18:56:16

But it’s a start and it’s been a long time coming. Negotiators will be busy for years sorting out new deals and legalities. It’ll be completed though in time. And looking at the scramble to become PM it doesn’t seem to be putting anyone off!

varian Thu 13-Jun-19 18:55:59

ug posted:-

"I have never been nasty. Not once.

A little smug now perhaps but that is only because after 3 long years, our negotiators for Brexit have now discovered their backbones! That and the fact that No Deal is back on the table after howls of protest. "

How it is ever acceptable to be smug about inflicting damage on our country for years to come?

The majority of British people have the good sense to reject brexit. It is time to reject the smug minority who think they are entitled to get their own way, irrespective of the harm, because they can always retreat to a little bolt hole in Malaga or Marbella. Smug and utterly despicable!

Firecracker123 Thu 13-Jun-19 18:53:58

Whitewave you are always going on about poverty, homelessness etc what exactly are you doing personally to alleviate these problems.
