and all he stands for. I seriously cannot believe there are genuine people on this forum who appear to think otherwise.

Yes, Martin Luther King was a wonderful man in my opinion. He made lots of speeches but the ‘I have a dream’ speech is the most famous. A few years ago we stayed in The Willard hotel in Washington DC and we learnt that he wrote that speech in that hotel, and then delivered the speech from The Lincoln Memorial. The pictures are there in the museum. Apparently he redelivered the speech in Memphis, which is of course where he was shot. Fascinating history. But we’ve hijacked the thread Ellan. By the way, he was a pastor, maybe that’s why your mum turned to Billy Graham.

EllanVannin Sat 13-Jul-19 14:34:08

Mum and myself liked Martin Luther King---" I have a dream " something I've remembered from my earlier years.
After MLK's demise, mum started listening to Billy Graham.

We have just returned from America, and we visited the National Museum of Civil Rights, situated at the place where Martin Luther King was assassinated. It was very emotional. King was a wonderful man in my opinion. Slightly off thread I know, but CyclingKnitter reminded me.

If the person is innocent let’s hope the powers that be will release him/her soon.

maddyone Sat 13-Jul-19 13:08:50

Ah, now I understand Ellan, I just wasn’t sure what you meant at first. Thank you for explaining. In fact, I think I remember some similar cases myself, reported in the media, maybe I remember the case you mention.

CyclingKnitter Sat 13-Jul-19 12:09:19

Some racist rants from the man named on this thread.

CyclingKnitter Sat 13-Jul-19 12:00:21

Johno, you say that the man being discussed on this thread is “great”. How would you rank him in relation to - for example - Beveridge. Or Gandhi? Or Martin Luther King? Or Mandela? Or Desmond Tutu? Or Bevan? What is your definition of “great man”? What criteria does a man need to fulfil to earn the attribution of greatness?

EllanVannin Sat 13-Jul-19 11:43:53

Is this justice ?? Unfortunately given the length of time that this case has been rumbling on for, many of those involved have now died, but nevertheless the case continues and I have every faith in those who have tirelessly fought to see it through as the biggest MOJ this country will ever see.

EllanVannin Sat 13-Jul-19 11:40:09

Maddyone I've been following a murder case for years which after the judge had handed out the life sentence a politician stuck his nose in and decided that the " criminal " involved is never to be released and will " die in prison ", which overruled what the judge had originally stated-----life being 25 years but the person is heading towards 33 years of incarceration-------for a crime he clearly didn't commit.

The politician had imposed a whole life tariff without informing the said prisoner.

maddyone Sat 13-Jul-19 09:55:28

......as I’m......

maddyone Sat 13-Jul-19 09:54:12

Thank you GG for the information re tv programme (we all went somewhat off thread there didn’t we) but can you explain further please Ellan asim not sure I understand what you’ve just said re the politician.

Lessismore Sat 13-Jul-19 09:48:19

We need people like Tommy Robinson to expose these disgusting scandals

No we don't. We need a properly funded, professional ,police force and a change in attitude.

Nobody " needs" him or his side kicks.

I am surprised to read this tbh.

EllanVannin Sat 13-Jul-19 09:20:13

Johno I beg to differ with your " life sentence " . When you throw a politician into the mix who goes against what the judge ordered it's the say of the politician that wins the day and not the judge's ruling. I can prove that.

Johno Sat 13-Jul-19 09:19:00

Prison is the right place for him "and no doubt for some of his followers"?? I dont care what you think of me. I do not seek approval. I also NEVER personally insult the writer of a thread/post on the internet. TommY Robinson is a great man. He has my full support. I am a former Police officer - Crown Court Clerk and a Manager of life sentence prisoners formerly Home Office MOJ. I have also sat on hundred of Parole Board hearings re Life sentence prisoners.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 13-Jul-19 09:05:27

Yaxley-Lennon has successfully hoodwinked you Johno. He is no fighter for justice and owes the victims of the grooming gangs an apology. Without the swift reaction of the police he could have over-turned the successful prosecution of these men by flouting the reporting restrictions that were in place.

He does this sort of thing merely to enhance his notoriety and entrap those who don't even realise how racist they are. He is a criminal. If you read the list in the tweet linked by Maizie he is a comrade of paedophiles. He is a vile human being and prison is exactly the right place for him and, no doubt, for some of his followers. It sounds to me as if you have no real thought for the real victims just a wish to join in the prejudice and discrimination of one particular group.

Johno Sat 13-Jul-19 08:40:33

GROWSTUFF - I defend him 100%. You will never show any evidence he is racist, not any. So I find it bizarre that people who belong to the senior end in age group wish to impugn a man without any evidence.

Johno Sat 13-Jul-19 08:37:16

The Life Sentence for murder is mandatory. The judge has no choice. The life sentence does not mean time in prison it means a sentence by the courts which restricts your freedom and therefore the life sentence is just that... part in prison and the rest of your life on licence - which is a sentence by the court because your right to free movement is limited and is imposed by the state. It therefore follows, if you are released for a murder you did not commit and this is accepted you are NOT on the licence because the licence part is the life sentence. It is dependent upon whether being released was a parole board decision or court of appeal.

MaizieD Sat 13-Jul-19 08:36:37

I hope, Kandinski, that you despise the EDL followers, such as those listed on the twitter thread I posted, who do do just the same thing? With children...n

Kandinsky Sat 13-Jul-19 08:18:39

I despise the Asian gangs who raped young vulnerable girls, & the police and other authorities who turned a blind eye for fear of being called racist.

We need people like Tommy Robinson to expose these disgusting scandals.

Their!

Labiak is right. It follows a family and there different reactions to a possible future. It is very nuanced. I would not agree with Lessismore; I certainly didn't see it as "devoid of optimism and hope". Much of any optimism came from the family dynamics. Each family member held very different views but they managed to keep their family ties. We saw heroism, cowardice, self-sacrifice and self serving against a background of progress and regression. I must admit I felt it could have been longer - to play out the passage of time in more depth. It was a dystopian "future", but only some members of the family allowed it to dehumanise them. Just as in an country under occupation some rose above the new order, some sank beneath it, and some just struggled to survive.

A precis is impossible; the reason I'm rewatching it is because it's very much 'blink and you'll miss something important'. However, after giving up on it first time round because it upset me so much, rewatching actually gave me an optimism that good will always win over bad and we need to have faith in the younger generation that will have to sort out all this mess we're creating. Also, I've come to [in a strange sort of way] love the family. Ann Reid was superb but so were they all; even down to sweet little Lincoln. And there is humour in it, with very cleverly timed one liners thrown in. Supposedly the writer has wanted to do a series of this kind for 20 years but I do wonder what he would have written 20 years ago. As well as Cold Lazarus it somehow makes me think of Heimat; something else I'd like to rewatch.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-19 23:13:20

I will Gill, I will.

GillT57 Fri 12-Jul-19 22:43:56

maddyone watch it and weep. Excellent series, well written, great cast.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-19 21:28:06

Oh dear, maybe it’s better that I didn’t see it then.
