Leaked e-mails and Farage as replacement?

The leaked e-mails from the British Ambassador criticising Trump have hit the headlines. There is some speculation that this is a put-up job and the aim is to get Nigel as the next Ambassador. Personally I can't think of anything more disastrous, or many people less suitable. No doubt him and Trump would be best mates but should that be the position of a British Ambassador? And can you think of anyone worse than Farage?

I don’t completely agree POGS re the journalist doing her job. Reporting based on leaks can be that or can just be mischief making with absolutely no ‘in the public interest defence’. What was in the public interest in this story? As for Wikileaks, that type of wholesale indiscriminate leaking is not to be applauded. As I’ve said upthread, should we always let journalists publish whatever leaks they have regardless of consequence?

POGS, an excellent post, summing up exactly how I feel about the whole affair, thank you for your measured comments opposed to the usual hysteria.

Conspiracy theories / the kangaroo court will inevitably be believed and made by some but until it is factually established who , what and where the leak came from then that is all they are , ' conspiracy theories '.

' One ' conspiracy theory will probably be true but the rest will be nothing more than rubbish talk.

The person/group behind the leak are being forgotten at the expense of a journalist who is doing no more than her job. That job may or may not suit at times , I am thinking Guardian / Wikileaks who would not divulge their informant and the damage that episode caused worldwide, happy to be corrected

Whoever is behind the leak, indeed ANY leak, if it is a civil servant or politician they should be sacked immediately and if they have signed The Official Secrets Act or similar then it's about time this country started to take that seriously and act according .

Leaking information is a time old problem but there is it appears a big problem at this moment of time. This particular leak is wilful in it's aim of causing damage to the relationship between the UK Government and another friendly country and the person/ group behind that leak are dangerous to the UK and must be found and no doubt they will.

As for Trump I think he would have been thought better of if he had not responded as the person behind the leak hoped he would. He fell for ' the game '!

It is also a fact the UK is not the first nor probably the last
Government/Country to have embarrassing comments made known/exposed and America has had that problem too. The way it is handled is through diplomacy and that is where Trump fails miserably and he is too thin skinned but the fact is derogatory remarks will cause problems and whilst any country should be able to speak honestly through their Embassadors it is wise to think what /how can this information get out and what must we do to stop that happening.

Johnson has not once supported our ambassador.

On 23 July or shortly after, he will dance to Trumps tune.

There is something very wrong taking place in our politics

The real news about the Kim Darroch saga is not even the unacceptable comments from Trump but the effort of insiders to remove a senior civil servant who favours Remain. We are truly living during a religious war. Decency goes out the window and there is no sense of outrage.

At least he knows his limits - he should have a word with that idiot across the pond

Lilyflower Tue 09-Jul-19 20:14:01

Nigel has said himself that he is not a diplomat.

SirChenjin Tue 09-Jul-19 20:08:13

Riverwalk I completely agree.

Our trade deals will be done with dictators and despots in future and if anyone thinks that the EU is undemocratic then they haven’t seen anything yet. We will be completely at the mercy of these kind of people after Brexit - god help us all.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Jul-19 19:20:40

He doesn’t seem to have stopped all day. Quite extraordinary.

trisher Tue 09-Jul-19 19:19:00

Seems that the Abassador was absolutely right about Trump and his administration. Trump's tweets just confirm things.

I'd really, really like to see the American Ambassador's frank and confidential report on the situation in Britain.

maddyone Tue 09-Jul-19 18:57:02

I understand now Maizie, I read in a hurry (just come in) and jumped to wrong conclusion without putting brain into gear. Sorry WWM2.
I most likely don’t know much about what diplomats do Maizie, not being a diplomat or moving in those circles. It just appeared to me that it could have been expressed in a different way.

Riverwalk Tue 09-Jul-19 18:57:01

It's embarrassing that the UK has to tiptoe around the moron - to secure all those trade deals we're going to sign.

It will be interesting to see what Bozzer has to say on this evening's debate.

MaizieD Tue 09-Jul-19 18:51:36

I feel it should be within the capabilities of a British Ambassador to express him/herself in such a way as to make the situation explicitly clear without resorting to such uncomplimentary language.

I really don't think you understand what diplomats do. maddy. Part of their job is to make confidential frank reports to the FO about the people and country they are dealing with. It's been like this for 100s of years.

MaizieD Tue 09-Jul-19 18:47:22

No, I think Jonathon Lis is saying that, maddyone.

The BA leaves at the end of this year anyway, so that’s the time for a change, I don’t believe he will be replaced before then.

I'm inclined to agree with you, lemon shock

Give it a few days and Trump will be tantruming about something else. He's done his tit for tat about May. Honours may be even in his eyes...

maddyone Tue 09-Jul-19 18:41:10

I hope you weren’t saying I’m a moron WWM2?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Jul-19 16:45:01

Trump is an ignorant, petty, whining, mercurial, shallow, sexist, fascist baby moron. If you think he’ll treat ‘Boris’ any better when he upsets him you too are a moron. The only special relationship we ever really had was with the EU, and that’s the one we’ve thrown away.

Callistemon Tue 09-Jul-19 16:03:26

I think I'd take that as a compliment myself!

maddyone Tue 09-Jul-19 16:02:55

Apparently Trump has labelled Theresa May as a disaster! Well he got that one right at least grin

Callistemon Tue 09-Jul-19 15:58:55

Were the leaks even LEAKS
Well, there's a thought!

Fake news?

maddyone Tue 09-Jul-19 15:54:45

That’s unfortunate Lemon, I was hoping he would be recalled and replaced before then.

maddyone Tue 09-Jul-19 15:54:02

It doesn’t really matter what our individual views on Trump are grin nonetheless this information shouldn’t have been leaked, and I truly hope that the perpetrator is found and dealt with accordingly. In my humble opinion there are ways and means to express oneself without being quite as forthright as our Ambassador was in this leak. When I was teaching I had to write reports every year, and I had to be extremely diplomatic in the way I expressed myself about some children. I feel it should be within the capabilities of a British Ambassador to express him/herself in such a way as to make the situation explicitly clear without resorting to such uncomplimentary language.

lemongrove Tue 09-Jul-19 15:09:17

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Jul-19 14:58:15

And this, our future PM appears to have no opinion.

Simon Nixon
@Simon_Nixon
Huge test now for Boris Johnson who appears to have said nothing on this so far. Does he stand up for British officials and British institutions or capitulate to this grotesque bullying?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Jul-19 14:54:56

I’m inclined to agree with this

Jonathan Lis
@jonlis1

May’s decision to grant this petulant, preening, moronic ogre the dignity of a state visit, debasing the Royal Family to inflate Trump’s insatiable ego, has resulted in nothing but enduring humiliation. Brexit is ruining us. We are slowly losing everything for no reason at all.
