Instead of gloom and doom (plenty about) how about we lift our spirits with any good news we hear to cheer us up?
?

As in today:
“THE Wall Street banking giant JP Morgan is about to embark on a major hiring spree in the City, despite Jamie Dimon, the chief executive, previously warning about Brexit job losses.

The growth plans stand in contrast to repeated warnings made by the bank’s boss about the effect Brexit could have on UK staff numbers”

Influenced by Dads Army!!!!!! I think most people who might have been would be either dead or well into their 90's!
I love D.A, but recognised even in the 60's when I was young, that times had changed considerably since the war, and to hark back now to how life was when when I was a baby which I clearly can't remember, from the vantage point of 73 in 2016, would be more than! ridiculous!

I think people do have a craving for what seems a much simpler life but why they think Brexit is going to achieve that is beyond me...

Our national team winning at any sporting tournament is good news, but does it just distract from the parlous state we are in?

Beer and circuses indeed.

There is an interesting theory that the constant repetition of episodes of "Dad's Army" (which I always enjoy) had something to do with the leave vote - the rekindling of that good old war-time spirit - which served us well in the 1940s but is hardly right for the changed world we now inhabit.

Well I was VERY excited as the end of the cricket was totally riveting.
I love the buzz and psychological challenges of this most remarkable game. Sadly, we now learn that although “we” won, it was down to one-run which was awarded to us in error.
We should have lost... shock
Thankfully, although it takes the gloss off, it was still fantastic to watch. And the two teams were extremely civil and complementary of each other too.

Labaik Tue 16-Jul-19 13:09:49

I know it was on on Sunday; but prior to that people hardly knew the team were doing well...

SilverDarlings12 Tue 16-Jul-19 13:08:31

Hurrah for Alan Turing on the new note.
Why do so many posts on Gransnet end in arguments?
Slainte.

Cricket World Cup was on “normal” TV on Sunday.

It’s the Sports Associations that sell out to the highest bidder.

Labaik Tue 16-Jul-19 12:34:03

No one watches cricket these days as it was taken off terrestrial television at the height of it's popularity and put onto Sky [ok for those that can afford it]. Same thing happened with Rugby. We do well and then the governing bodies sell to the highest bidder which means the vast majority of people lose interest, and that includes young people who could be moving the sport forward.

I wonder what they are? I am not sure that my post could be taken as telling people what they may or may not do, perhaps I should have put a 'please' in it somewhere.

It was more a cry of exasperation as the most boring subject ever, threatened to invade and infect this thread like a fungus. There are so many threads on the subject of leave/Remain/Brexit, that is nice for some more general threads to steer clear of it.

Possibly you are more likely to see such posts as being commands for you to do or not do something, I tend not to take things so personally.

GracesGranMK3 Tue 16-Jul-19 11:13:19

I reply to the posts not the person M0nica. If you post telling people what they may or may not do I reach certain conclusions.

M0nica Tue 16-Jul-19 10:25:40

GGMK3 Do not make assumptions about other people on this thread. I am emphatically neither far right nor a leaver, but I am very happy to contribute to this thread.

Just think, if we were American we would have Donald Trump as our President. Now isn't that a reason to be glad to be living in the UK? No matter how dreadful our politicians are they are truly British and can never achieve American standards of awfulnessgrin.

England (does that count) won the World Cup (I thought that was footballconfused this weekend. You would have thought from the media coverage that the whole of the UK was obsessed by it. In fact more people watched the tennis from Wimbledon than watched the cricket.

That is how to keep the UK great. (we do not need to make it great)

Unemployment is down again this month. So good that more people are in work. Good for their mental health and self esteem.
???

Jabberwok Tue 16-Jul-19 10:01:40

Yes, hooray for that Lazigirl, also the cricket team is something to celebrate!

Lazigirl Tue 16-Jul-19 09:40:44

Let's hear it for the women's netball teams, who are getting a higher profile at last. On BBC this week and England are doing well. (Sadly I wasn't good at school)

suziewoozie Tue 16-Jul-19 09:34:20

You see Jabber that’s the problem - there are people in the UK at the moment who don’t feel that way for a variety of understandable reasons. It’s daft to think that there are not.

Jabberwok Tue 16-Jul-19 09:31:00

You're quite right M0nica and Lemon, and I'm sorry to have allowed myself to be rattled! It's a truly beautiful morning here, so who couldn't be glad to be living in one of the best countrys in the world and be optimistic!

suziewoozie Tue 16-Jul-19 09:16:31

I think threads like this are quite tricky to navigate in tone and content. I like lemon’s contribution about the steepest street in the world - it’s quirky, factual and non controversial. There’s also a difference between sharing good news - which is something happening here and now. ( ie the street) and generalised what is ‘good’ about the UK which can result in discord.

GracesGranMK3 Tue 16-Jul-19 09:06:31

No M0nica I will not be dictated to by the far right. The only reason you could need a thread like this is because of the "if onlies" who are generally Leave voters. This could try is great, good things happen here and where things are not as great as we would like we work to change them. The only people who want fundamental change of our whole way of life because, the tell us, things were better in the past, are the Leavers.

lemongrove Tue 16-Jul-19 09:02:33

Wales now has the steepest street in the world, according to the Guinness Book Of Records, taking this accolade from Dunedin NZ ?
There are pics on the ipad news, the people who live in the Welsh village are very happy indeed, as they can now put up signs saying this ( and Dunedin will have to take their signs down.) Increased tourism.

Pantglas1 Tue 16-Jul-19 08:57:45

I think they just can’t help themselves M0nica - like Pavlov’s dogs......

lemongrove Tue 16-Jul-19 08:57:39

One happy and celebratory thread about the UK is allowed surely!

lemongrove Tue 16-Jul-19 08:53:23

Well said Monica ????????????

M0nica Tue 16-Jul-19 08:46:50

Oh, for heaven's sake, stop wittering on about leave/remain, Brexit on this thread. There are plenty of other threads where all the bores (on this subject) can stick together and witter to each other.

Don't let it creep, like Ebola, and infect every other thread in this forum.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 16-Jul-19 08:44:19

Just come onto this discussion, Grandad, can you give the ground a kiss from me ass well. Whats to celebrate, the wonderful weather which lifts your spirits. How generous the brits are in helping others in their time of need. And lastly that we have people who have a brain and are fighting to stay in the EU. Lastly the wonderful coffee shop down the road where I am now going.

Urmstongran Tue 16-Jul-19 08:43:44

Oh Only the Leavers could think we need such a thread I wonder why that might be GGMk3
Could you maybe think of a reason why that might be?
