Instead of gloom and doom (plenty about) how about we lift our spirits with any good news we hear to cheer us up?
?

As in today:
“THE Wall Street banking giant JP Morgan is about to embark on a major hiring spree in the City, despite Jamie Dimon, the chief executive, previously warning about Brexit job losses.

The growth plans stand in contrast to repeated warnings made by the bank’s boss about the effect Brexit could have on UK staff numbers”

You don't read or understand anything you don't agree with do you UG. I have just explained why I think this is a great country but you turn it into Newspeak - completely reversing what I have said. It is a great country; the only people who list their dislikes of the country as it is now are the Leavers.

Urmstongran Tue 16-Jul-19 08:24:50

Trust you two.
?
Might have known the gloom buckets would stick together.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jul-19 08:08:23

gg3 I have to grin to myself at some of the posts.

Some classic right wing authoritarian rhetoric on this thread. "See the world as I see it or you don't love our country" stuff.

Only the Leavers could think we need such a thread. The rest of us can see the good news of how things have improved over the last 40 years while being members of the EU. No need to be running what we have down all the time.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
We were talking with a young patriotic Canadian who had a quite different knowledge of history. He had no idea that penicillin, auld lang syne, telephones, tv, lighthouses, tarmac, raincoats etc were Scottish inventions but rather Canada was the place to be proud of.
It made me very happy actually. I think we should be proud of our own achievements as well as everyone else's.
A Sudanese refugee when looking at the river Tweed told me how beautiful the Nile is.
There's a newspaper called positive news which is full of good news stories.

Britain wasn't the first country to embrace Christianity, as RosieLeah claims. If the intention of this thread is to celebrate good news, maybe we could stick to facts not fantasy.

growstuff Tue 16-Jul-19 04:12:12

BradfordLass, I'm still baffled why "news" that Christianity originated in Britain should be relevant to this thread, especially as it's not even true.

RationalWiki describes "The Drama of the Lost Disciples" (the book RosieLeah was describing) as:

"a pseudo-historical book by George F. Jowett. The book purports to trace the evidences of Joseph of Arimathea, the apostles, Mary and even Jesus in Britain.

The Drama of the Lost Disciples has gone through 16 editions (printed up to 2009 by Covenant Publishing) selling 55,000 copies (16th ed. preface). The book has sold so many copies based on its sensational and eccentric claims. The content however is dubious, ranging from entirely speculative, misquotes, unsourced assertions, to claims that are outright lies."

I'm sure it makes gripping fiction, but I still don't see why it's "good news".

PS. I agree with you about Alan Turing and am glad that there is more positive acceptance of diversity of all types. It just such a shame that Brexit and "Trumpism" have given some people an excuse to exhibit bigotry in other areas. I hope we're not going to go backwards.

rosecarmel Tue 16-Jul-19 04:02:53

Yes!

BradfordLass72 Tue 16-Jul-19 02:40:14

I'm not quite sure how this qualifies as good news, almost 2,000 years after the event

Err, I don't think Jesus would agree smile or indeed anyone who currently reads the Gospels.

Alan Turing on the currency - that is truly marvellous news. Such an amazing man, ahead of his time in so many things and sadly the victim of appalling bigotry.

So, add to the the good things about the UK, the astonishing brains which have contributed so very much to our present freedoms.

And our changed attitudes so that gay people are no longer routinely scorned, disrespected and even hounded to their deaths.

The old Country is still a good place to live due to the unwritten rules of good behaviour that most people subscribe to. Teachers , nurses, doctors, paramedics, who keep on being conscientious despite forces of unreason and sheer criminality.

growstuff Mon 15-Jul-19 23:31:09

Yep! A good dose of bread and circuses will keep the plebs happy.

It’s just great to see this thread has grown legs! Thank you so much all you cheery and optimistic people for taking part.

It’s brilliant to have so many positive posts to read from maddyone, Mealybug, BradfordLass (big thank you for the gorgeous photos there!) plus great messages from wildswan GabriellaG54, dogsmother and BlueBelle, eazybee and Dee1012 for instance.

I hope we can continue add to this thread to celebrate and share the good news about the U.K. it reminds us that we have much to be proud of and it’s a nice change from putting ourselves down.

The UK isn't one of the smaller vulnerable nations and isn't in the Eurozone. We are one of the strongest nations in the EU. Do you really care about smaller vulnerable nation, Jabberwok? How would you feel about increasing state aid to some of them? PS. I wouldn't mind disentangling myself form the bullying, corrupt UK government and becoming the US's poodle - I think our grandchildren would really thank us for that!

Jabberwok Mon 15-Jul-19 20:59:44

We owe It to our grandchildren to see brexit through and to disentangle ourselves from the bullying corrupt EU. The rich mans club who cares little for the financial misery they cause to smaller vulnerable nations as they trap them further and further into debt. Who on earth wants to be a party to, and responsible for, other peoples despair!

Our ancestors who all inhabited this green and pleasant land went through good times and bad times.

Ours has been a very fortunate generation to have lived through good times.

We must do all we can to ensure that our children and grandchildren do not have to live through very bad times.

We owe it to them to do all that we can to STOP BREXIT.

Cherrytree59 Mon 15-Jul-19 18:57:33

My daughter remarked this morning that to born in the UK (in Ihho) was like winning a lottery or receiving a Golden ticket.

So many humans live in poverty, in fear of their and families, life and under dreadful regimes.

We are so lucky, whatever happens with Brexit, government etc we will still live in wonderful green and pleasant
land whether it be thistle shamrock stdavids or ?where I live atm.

varian Mon 15-Jul-19 18:48:37

Good news -we are a great country now, but we should not take it for granted.

We must not give up hope that we can continue to be a great country - which will only be possible if this brexit nonsense is stopped, which is what the majority of British people want.

Greta Mon 15-Jul-19 18:45:26

I guess many French, Dutch, Danes, Finns etc are also proud of their countries' achievements and natural beauty. I'm not 'shouting anybody down' and I don't subscribe to constant 'doom and gloom'. However, I think that with most things there are always pros and cons. It is also worth remembering that many of our achievements have only come about through cooperation with other nations. I hope we will continue to engage with others – not just when it comes to trade.

growstuff Mon 15-Jul-19 18:26:28

RosieLeah, what's the name of the book you're reading about Christianity. I'm quite surprised, because it's generally accepted that Peter was the first Pope and Pope Linus (the second Pope) was Italian. However, I'm happy to be informed differently, although I'm not quite sure how this qualifies as good news, almost 2,000 years after the event.

suziewoozie Mon 15-Jul-19 18:09:07

Sussex - that’s not a very nice post at all and certainly not kind, caring or tolerant. Some people have tough lives for a variety of reasons and are not always able to be cheerful in those situations.

Happychops Mon 15-Jul-19 18:03:28

Finished work tonight, sun still shining.Spoke to lovely man watering his garden, on my walk home, discussed the gorgeous planting , he was a happy soul and gave me some tips. Got home and watered my plants.
Bees and butterflies in the garden.Birds chirping, me sat drinking a cup of tea, what more could I want, ahh Bliss

Sussexborn Mon 15-Jul-19 17:58:37

I am very glad that I was fortunate enough to be born in perfectly imperfect Great Britain. The vast majority of people are kind and caring and we are incredibly tolerant of all the whingers and whiners. I guess they have been brainwashed and are not responsible for their negativity and miserable outlook. Sad really and best to skip over their posts so they can’t drag you down.

Rosina Mon 15-Jul-19 17:54:51

First country to abolish slavery too - and all industrial progress apparently springs from this island, I believe from Derbyshire where the Industrial Revolution began.

suziewoozie Mon 15-Jul-19 17:43:26

Rosie - I thought it was Armenia? What’s the book you’re reading?

RosieLeah Mon 15-Jul-19 17:21:32

I'm currently reading a book about the beginnings of the Christian church. It came as a surprise to learn that the church was first established here in Britain, and taken to Rome by the Britons. The first Bishop of Rome was St Linus, the son of a British king. Plus, far from the Romans trying to conquer a brutish rabble, they were up against, disciplined, educated people. These days we are not encouraged to be proud of our country, and indeed there is a lot to be ashamed of, but being the first country to embrace Christianity is something to be proud of.
