Instead of gloom and doom (plenty about) how about we lift our spirits with any good news we hear to cheer us up?
?

As in today:
“THE Wall Street banking giant JP Morgan is about to embark on a major hiring spree in the City, despite Jamie Dimon, the chief executive, previously warning about Brexit job losses.

The growth plans stand in contrast to repeated warnings made by the bank’s boss about the effect Brexit could have on UK staff numbers”

It is on the “politics and news” forum - look at the heading- yes there are lovely bits of the U.K. - and many other countries too- but it’s not politics or news which is why it has been questioned.

Actually GGMK3 the originator of this thread said quite specifically that this was a thread to "lift our spirits with any good news we hear to cheer ourselves up". This is not a "politics and news" thread as you have stated, there are a number of those already on GN.

I thought I was being positive mentioning my many lovely visits to the UK over a number of years. My comments had nothing whatsoever to do with politics, past or present, but expressed my enjoyment of the natural beauty and history of so many parts of the UK. And the sun still shines every day even for those who choose not to see it.

I’m not grudging lemon just because something happens in London doesn’t mean it’s success or otherwise can be claimed as a British only success or somehow good news for the U.K., when that event involved a great deal of international cooperation and expertise- why pretend otherwise? We are not as insular as some would like us to be.

GillT57 Mon 22-Jul-19 12:24:33

You summed up my feelings exactly GGmk3.

I know this is such a difficult time for those in the UK but having visited so many parts of the UK please remember what a great place it is and that there is so much to celebrate and cherish. Mon 22-Jul-19 11:23:04

I don't think anyone has forgotten Apricity. This is a news and politics thread, however, and in those areas, things are not so bright and for many of us, they are devastating. We all love our country and it is a right-wing trope to suggest that we don't simply because we disagree with someone else's politics. That is the start down a very nasty authoritarian road. Trump is doing the same suggesting the four women he has attacked (in order to secure his political base) are "incapable of loving our country".

It's rubbish and I expect the right on here are well aware it is a fallacious argument. Have a "chat" thread on this by all means but I am very aware that loving my country is about helping my country to do better; educating myself to be the best I can be and being knowledgable, ensuring that knowledge is based on fact, not fiction. Paying my taxes, seeing everyone around me as an equal however they define themselves. And it is about being prepared to stand up for my country even when attacked for doing so.

I am sure others can add what means loving their country to them but the sun coming up in the morning and the beautiful countryside is not politics or news and are mainly nothing to do with those living here.

Thank you, Apricity for your lovely, positive post. I’m so glad you enjoyed your stay.

I know this is such a difficult time for those in the UK but having visited so many parts of the UK please remember what a great place it is and that there is so much to celebrate and cherish.

My own heritage is all UK and I have trained, driven, camped and BnB'd from the north to the south from Skara Brae in the Orkneys to the Isles of Scilly and east and west from Portmerion in Wales to the Norfolk Broads and so much in between.

I have visited about 40 NT properties and so many beautiful gardens, not to mention the wonderful pubs. I love the landscape and the people I've met. Challenging times ahead for the UK but hang on to what you have. Please.

Happy Birthday GG13 wine cheers!

lemongrove Mon 22-Jul-19 10:21:43

It took place here crystaltipps... why be so grudging about anything that happens in the UK that is actually good.
Try a happy posting, just for a change.

GillT57 Mon 22-Jul-19 10:19:17

Happy birthday GG13 hope you have a great day !

We have pioneering hospitals in the UK, but they rely on international expertise in both staffing and research. So to trumpet this rare surgery as somehow good news just for the U.K., really fails to acknowledge that it is good news for international cooperation.

suziewoozie Mon 22-Jul-19 10:09:53

I suppose given the complexity of the surgery, it would be surprising if they had come through it unscathed. But I expect all rare surgery like this results in learning not just for separating twins but in paediatric neurology generally. The two lead surgeons have set up a charity saying they felt they had a ‘moral duty’ - that’s good news as well.

I'm glad you like our pubs Apricity. I love them too. We have a lovely, friendly local pub and we love it. It's sad to see so many pubs closing.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 22-Jul-19 10:04:14

It's my birthday today also...........unfortunately my birthday photos are not as flattering ???

Shoequeen53 Mon 22-Jul-19 10:03:00

The brain damage was mentioned on the BBC news coverage and it’s pretty evident just looking at them, it’s very sad indeed.

Jabberwok Mon 22-Jul-19 09:57:20

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Prince George! His mother certainly takes a good photo!!

Jabberwok Mon 22-Jul-19 09:39:31

Thank you to our Aussie friend! It's always nice to hear something good about this country and it quite cheered my day!
Looking at the twins, one appears to be more adversely affected than the other. Poor little souls, we can only wish them and their family well.

suziewoozie Mon 22-Jul-19 09:21:05

I haven’t found an update as to any brain damage or the extent thereof.

Shoequeen53 Mon 22-Jul-19 08:12:07

It is sad. Their quality of life will be awful.

Maggiemaybe Mon 22-Jul-19 07:54:55

I hadn’t heard that Safa and Marwa had suffered brain damage, crystaltipps. Has it been reported this weekend? How very sad.

Maggiemaybe Mon 22-Jul-19 07:41:55

No doubt someone’s already composing a post about the dangers of heatwaves, Urmstongran. Get your sunshade ready. sunshine

Urmstongran Mon 22-Jul-19 07:02:56

A heatwave is forecast in the next day or two. It’ll be good to have some decent sunshine in the UK this week. Itll be good to get out of my leggings!

The conjoined twins were separated at Great Ormond Street, though technically successful they have both sadly been left with brain damage. This would have been less likely if the operation had taken place earlier, but they were waiting for someone to pay for the operation, which eventually was paid for by an anonymous donor. I think that is quite sad in a way. The skilled surgeons were of many different nationalities as are the patients, this shows international interdependence. I have a relative who works at GOSH, she is an EU National as are many of her colleagues. She spends a lot of time fundraising for the hospital.

Irish pubs are hard to beat though.

Apricity Sun 21-Jul-19 23:35:39

As an Aussie visitor I would like to add that the UK has the best pubs in the world. No matter where you are in the UK there's a lovely pub nearby - warm, friendly and welcoming. Once in a very tiny pub in Nth Wales we were even treated to some glorious spontaneous singing by locals.

Many have tried to imitate 'Ye olde worlde British pub' in other parts of the world but all such efforts fail miserably. It's got to be the genuine article.

I'd like to suggest a toast to the the great British pub.
