I wonder how much of the Conservative Party this election will be hollowed out. We have already seen ministers making it clear they wouldn't work for Johnson and I see in the YP that the "Conservative chief in Leeds quits party and condemns 'Brexiteer-in-Chief ' Boris Johnson as unelectable. We have also had local councillors resign from the party.

Once these people leave the party I doubt they will return.

Out of the whole group that initially were seeking to be PM the only one who has not changed position to suck up to Johnson has been Stewart. Taken together with Johnson's: story of deceit etc it says a lot about the lack of any moral compass or patriotism in the modern Conservatives

Dragonfly46 what a well written post. I remember BJ railing against Gordon Brown becoming PM without facing a General Election - oh the irony. Many of his previous writings will come back to haunt him. It has been refreshing to read this thread and know that I am not alone in being disappointed , to say the least, that he is to be PM. Just to be clear, I no longer have any political allegiance. So sad that our country has come to this.

And the Johnson family seems to be a prime example of democracy in action as far as them having differing opinions but still remaining friends.

I have no idea but typically it is a very childish remark. I was not aware that not finding a liar and a cheat a suitable candidate to run our country was throwing the proverbial dummy out of the pram.

Brexit or no Brexit at this stage is immaterial as I cannot seeing anyone being able to execute it. There is always someone going to be there to block it. My personal views are irrelevant as this is a matter of fact.
Our country is in a very bad way and I am saddened by it all and the image we are projecting to the rest of the world.

If the leader of the country were chosen individually, there is a danger that personal charisma and/or influence with the media could take over than real leadership qualities.
Evidence of that is easy to find.

It is and, of course, we are not voting for a President as we already have a Head of State. We have voted for the political parties of our choice and the PM in this country needs to be the leader of the party with the majority vote.

If the country voted for a leader separately than in a GE, then we could end up with a leader at odds with the main political party - and look what happens in countries where that is the system.

Give the man a chance. I thought his speech was fine. On the question of 'No deal' there are plenty of experts - including the former governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, who have publicly stated that a no deal would be no problem; it's our biggest bargaining tool anyway - for the EU no deal means no say!
