So it's Boris

I know we knew this would happen but it didn't stop my heart sinking when it was confirmed. It's not even about party politics. It's about him. The country is in such a terrible position and the thought of him being the one trying to solve all the problems is farcical at best and utterly depressing.

They must have thought that Johnson was the best of a useless bunch.

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 12:35:13

Why should he be given a chance?

How about making the prize in a gameshow such as "The Chase" or "Eggheads" a crack at being PM? There's about much chance that the winner would make a success of it.

Elegran Wed 24-Jul-19 12:34:59

POGS exactly! I agree (almost) with your post "A General Election votes in a Political Party, NOT , an individual."

I would change that slightly to "Individuals of a political party", not an individual as leader of that party (though his/her personality may have influenced the voters to some extent.) Those individuals then vote for the person that they, individually, would prefer to be the leader. They after all, are the ones who will be "managed" by their leader, and if one is imposed on them whom they are reluctant to accept, there will be friction.

If the leader of the country were chosen individually, there is a danger that personal charisma and/or influence with the media could take over than real leadership qualities.

Evidence of that is easy to find.

A chance to do what? Bankrupt us with his bung to people earning £80k a year? Drag us out of the EU with no deal into the mother and father of recessions? Sell the NHS off to his American buddies?

Fortunately, I believe his term of office as PM will be the shortest in history. When there are Tory MPs willing to vote to bring his government down and he has a majority, including the DUP, of two, I don’t think his chances are great.

L iving in France with many French friends and others of diverse nationalities I have yet to meet one person who thinks Boris is anything but a joke and are amazed/appalled/cannot understand how he has reached this position. The international community put him in the same bracket as the Donald. Very scary.

As for the ludicrous suggestion that us expats don't moan about the governments we live with, well I can just imagine the outcry if we did! It's totally irrelevant in this instance.

Some posters may think Jura is being melodramatic, she makes some very salient points. Maybe us expats are more broadminded and internationally thinking and so see the bigger picture instead of the tunnel vision of insularity.

NannyC2 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:26:59

Great news.....let's give him a chance!

EthelJ Wed 24-Jul-19 12:24:30

...With all these criticisms, I do wonder how you think Trump and Boris were elected. Were they phantom voters?.....

Re trump more people voted for Hilary Clinton than for him. But the way the US system works he still won.
Re Boris. Around 94,000 conservative party members voted for him, hardly a huge mandate!

SirChenjin Wed 24-Jul-19 12:19:19

You voted for Brexit - what exactly did you vote for?

Lessismore Wed 24-Jul-19 12:18:15

SirChen, see my previous comment.

Baa Baa, say something often enough, people will believe it?

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 12:17:38

SirChenjin, Johnson is a BSer extraordinaire, but I've never seen any evidence of intelligence. PS. I did Latin at school, too, and it was known that if you wanted to get into Oxford, it was one of the easiest subjects to apply for.

Nanniejc1 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:17:13

Talk about negativity.....for goodness sake, where is the British Bulldog spirit!!I for one are sick of the moaners & scaremongering....We voted for Brexit so need to get it ‘done & dusted ‘ as soon as possible & hopefully Boris will be the one to deliver it!!!

growstuff Wed 24-Jul-19 12:14:42

So why does Trump think he has a right to comment? Why aren't people telling him to push off, like they did when Obama gave his opinion of Brexit?

Nanniejc1 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:12:08

I really don’t see why anybody living outside Gt Britain should have any concerns .....it’s up to us the people who actually live here & I agree with Urmstongran......Well done Boris ,we voted democratically for Brexit so ‘Bring it on’!!!

SirChenjin Wed 24-Jul-19 12:10:52

He’s a very clever intelligent man

This keeps appearing. Can we have some examples to counter the lack of intelligence he demonstrates so often please?

AdeleJay Wed 24-Jul-19 12:08:42

I am resigned to Boris being PM, I have accepted that we will leave the EU. But I confess that I don’t feel cheerful or optimistic about the future of the United Kingdom. I think we will
be worse off.
In 2016 I voted remain because I could not figure out how leaving would be of benefit in terms of the nation’s security & influence, nor indeed in economic terms. I remain none the wiser to this day...

Callistemon Wed 24-Jul-19 12:02:37

I think it’s going to be interesting.
I'm sure it is!

It will be interesting to see whom he chooses for key posts.

kiligran Wed 24-Jul-19 12:00:56

I think it’s going to be interesting. He’s a very clever intelligent man. I wouldn’t be too quick to right him off. He should be given a chance. The time to moan about him is if he doesn’t deliver.

Glenfinnan Wed 24-Jul-19 11:57:29

Think he is a breath of fresh air after the dull and boring Theresa! I have a feeling he will be ok!

Lilyflower Wed 24-Jul-19 11:57:15

Boris bigotry out in cartloads.

mabon1 Wed 24-Jul-19 11:51:02

I wouldn't trust him further than I could throw him and that's no distance at all.

Jaye53 Wed 24-Jul-19 11:49:00

Im still in shock over it cant take it in.please tell me its all a bad dream.Heaven help us.

Taylor53 Wed 24-Jul-19 11:47:33

Think you are all being pretty negative here, give the man a chance he might actually be good.

SirChenjin Wed 24-Jul-19 11:46:23

He will fight tooth and nail for the NHS

In what way? I've been working for the NHS for 26 years - please tell me exactly how he's going to do that. He's the man who said people with mental ill health should "drown out your inner demons with work" and he's planning to reform it - so I'm very interested.

123coco Wed 24-Jul-19 11:44:45

Gonegirl. Really.!!! How old are you ???

POGS Wed 24-Jul-19 11:44:08

jura

" If you have allowed this 'election' (by .2 of the population)
-

There is a ' continued ' lack of understanding over the ballot/vote , quite possibly on purpose , or maybe because there are ' some ' who genuinely do not understand the process that follows when the Prime Minister or Leader of a devolved nation resigns?

A General Election votes in a Political Party, NOT , an individual.
