So, what do we all think is going to be in said leaflet hmm ?

varian Mon 29-Jul-19 19:55:42

I think that everyone who has been paying attention to our politics in the last three years must recognise that the whole question of the UK's membership of the EU is far from simple.

How many voters understand all the details of international trade and tarrifs, the effect on our economy, the importance of European co-operation in everything from science to security, let alone the question of the Irish border?

I very much doubt whether there is one British voter, even trade experts, who understood all the implications of brexit, yet many poorly informed people like to claim they knew exactly what they voted for. They didn't, Nobody did.

It was absurdly irresponsible to ask people for a simple yes/ no answer to such a complicated question.

Nanniejc1 Mon 29-Jul-19 19:37:27

By the way Varian,it said nothing on our referendum slip about any deals.......was just stay or leave ......no ties at all .

Nanniejc1 Mon 29-Jul-19 19:33:32

Let’s face it whatever happens will be blamed on Brexit, already is.There are always going to be unhappy people wheather we leave or stay but the democratic vote was to leave & leave we must.We can make our country great again,we just need to all pull together .......stop being so pessimistic.I realise that I’m in the minority on Gransnet but I really couldn’t give a damn.......I may not have a degree or be academically brilliant but I have a voice & a vote & love my country.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 29-Jul-19 19:03:31

Urmstongran our Sainsbury's local, had that problem, they had closed all their chiller aisle with a notice stating it was due to the hot temperatures that they had overheated!!

Urmstongran Mon 29-Jul-19 19:02:16

Not sure about that allule all you Remainers would be trying to get across the border to our Brexit side on the backs of lorries etc

Urmstongran Mon 29-Jul-19 18:59:00

HM999 due to the heatwave, freezers in some supermarkets couldn’t cope & keep frozen food adequately solid.

Nowt to do with Brexit.

But watch this space .... all that’s bad will get blamed on us Leaving yet.

Nanniejc1 Mon 29-Jul-19 18:42:57

Granmaz

Do you not realise that there's more than just people that crosses borders?

Do you really think that Brexit is just about people?

varian Mon 29-Jul-19 18:23:41

We've all had enough of all this brexit nonsense. It has torn our country apart, trashed our international reputation, blighted the future for our children and grandchildren and cost us billions.

So let's just do the sensible thing and stop brexit.

Saggi Mon 29-Jul-19 18:14:28

Don’t know, don’t care.....I’ve had enough of it all!

MaizieD Mon 29-Jul-19 18:11:23

Oh, that's my favourite Leaver (or his son) Dr North, Nandalot. The UKIP founder member. I posted something from one of his blogs a few days ago. He's been researching the EU for years and years, co-wrote an anti-EU book and had a carefully thought out, and probably workable, plan for leaving the EU.

He's as firmly anti crashing out now as he was 3 years ago.

jura2 Mon 29-Jul-19 17:55:13

Oh NO they won't - but oh YES they should.

Nandalot Mon 29-Jul-19 17:45:24

Are they going to include this paragraph from a Leave HQ document from 2016?
‘One can say, unequivocally, that the UK could not survive as a trading nation by relying on the WTO Option. It would be an unmitigated disaster, and no responsible government should allow it. The option should be rejected.’
The full article is here.

Each time there is Referendum in the direct democracy that is SWitzerland, and totally different to the Parliamentary Democracy that is the UK - the Government has to publish an adivsory leaflet, often 10+ pages.

It has to show clearly the pros and cons- and the advice from each party. It has to be approved by all sides of the Government (which is always a coalition) and be seen to be absolutely impartial. In fact, a Ref last year was over-turned due to a slight bias in the leaflet. That is how it should be- not Party Propaganda.

varian Mon 29-Jul-19 17:10:35

Presumably this leaflet will be advocating brexit, but which type of brexit? Even keen ;leavers have never been able to agree on what brexit they think they voted for. The first step must be for brexiters to agree on that.

The next step should be to put the question to the people "do you want this brexit which this government is now pushing or would you rather the UK remains in the EU?.

The taxpayer should then fund two leaflets giving both sides of the argument.

When 80% of our national press plus the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation are already inundating us with pro-brexit lies, as they have done on a daily basis for years, we need a bit of balance, not more one-sided propaganda at the taxpayers expense.

Montenegro has signed a border check agreement with the EU. EU citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. That is why you are finding it so easy.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 29-Jul-19 16:44:12

They will be a member by 2025 amongst others

Granmaz Mon 29-Jul-19 16:40:57

And the point I was making was, that they are not members at present, and border controls are the same as, if not easier than EU member countries.

Granmaz Mon 29-Jul-19 16:38:54

Whitewavemark2 what makes you think that - like I said I visit regularly and I would say that the consensus of opinion is, that they may have changed their minds!

Whitewavemark2 Mon 29-Jul-19 16:32:36

Montenegro is joining the EU soon.

Granmaz Mon 29-Jul-19 16:26:50

GracesGranMK3 why do you think there will be extra checks at borders? - we regularly visit Montenegro, who aren’t part of the EU, going through passport control is no different to going through passport control in Spain, France, Portugal or any other country currently in the EU. The only difference is, we get a stamp in our passport!
