Dr Sarah Woolaston MP has joined the Libera Democrats. Great news!

GrannyGravy13 Mon 16-Sept-19 14:43:01

Paddy Ashdown is on record saying that the result was of the referendum should be final however small the margin.

The Liberal Democrat’s called for a referendum as early as 2008.

This party is no longer Liberal or Democratic.

Listen to Guy Verhofstadts speech (rant) along side Lib Dem’s in “Bollocks to Brexit” T shirts at the weekend.

Who on earth does she think she is. She has no right to think she can overrule the decision of both the Labour and Conservative party members, to choose their leader for them. Because she thinks she knows better.

humptydumpty Mon 16-Sept-19 13:53:13

That doesn't encourage me to feel postive towards Jo Swinton. Realistically, if she won't countenance a coalition with either CP or LP, how does she think they will ever be in government? That would put me right off voting LD.

Jo Swintons voting record - more yellow Tory than Liberal Democrats

voted FOR :
Bedroom Tax
reducing benefits for ill and disabled
tripling tuition fees
reforms allowing privatisation of NHS services
for culling badgers
Voted AGAINST:
a bankers bonus tax
increasing taxes for incomes over £150,000
raising sickness benefit in line with prices
regulation of Fracking
slowing rises in rail fares

Grany Mon 16-Sept-19 12:07:34

This sums up Jo Swinson auto correct

Grany Mon 16-Sept-19 12:06:18

t's often forgotten that the first of the three main parties to call for an EU referendum was... the Liberal Democrats
Many people view politicians as self-serving, opportunistic and deceitful. And often they are right. I agree this sums up Jo Swindon.

Here’s
@joswinson
backing an in-out referendum

Jo Swinson has not ruled out working with other parties, but has said clearly that the Libdems will not go into a coalition government led by Corbyn or Johnson.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 16-Sept-19 11:55:17

I don't see them as "lite". The Tories are socially conservative while the Liberals are socially liberal. However, they are both conservative with a leaning towards neo-liberalism fiscally.

I do not think the Liberals have changed since they a) went into government with the Tories and b) would not use the word Social or Socialist in their name when they 'merged' with the SDP.

We do not have a socially liberal, fiscally socialist party in the UK yet strangely other countries do.

Grany Mon 16-Sept-19 11:13:11

Agree Eloethan

Jo Swinson's voting record and her willingness to contemplate a coalition with the Conservatives, who (with the co-operation of the Lib Dems) have brought this country to its knees, while completely dismissing Labour, says it all really. They're just the Conservative-lite party.

You are wrong grany

Jo Swinson has not ruled out working with Labour. She has only ruled out being part of a Corbyn led government.

Jo has said that she does not think either Corbyn or Johnson are fit to be PM.

I am sure many who have previously voted Labour or Tory would agree.

GillT57 Mon 16-Sept-19 10:55:44

who is Versace Salt?

Grany Mon 16-Sept-19 10:50:27

She would like to be deputy to Johnson ha

growstuff Mon 16-Sept-19 10:49:15

Has Swinson been asked about a Coalition with the Conservatives? What was her reply?

Grany Mon 16-Sept-19 10:46:02

and yet has ruled out working with Labour every time she's asked.

Even her own party recognise they're just
@Conservatives
now..
"
@LibDems
leader
@joswinson
has been shouted down by her own party members, as she defended the records of ex-Conservative MPs who have joined the party"

Now why would someone apparently so anti Brexit rule out Labour but not Johnson and Mogg ?

She would go in coalition with the Tories.
Appalling her Tory like voting record

She reminds me of Versace Salt

GracesGranMK3 Sun 15-Sept-19 23:12:18

No she didn't UG. Could we have a verbatim quote if you are so sure otherwise I, for one, will feel you have similar tendencies to the great Johnson we have somehow been lumbered with as prime minister.

varian Sun 15-Sept-19 19:40:24

Wrong UG you were not paying attention.

Jo Swinson did not predict the result of the next general election. She merely said that the Liberal Democrats would have a clear policy of stopping brexit, and that is what would happen if there was a majority Liberal Democrat government.

She also said that there is no limit to the ambitions of the Liberal Democrats. Why should there be?

If before there was a general election, a second referendum or people's vote was proposed, then the LibDems would back it and campaign for Remain.

Over the last three and a half years I have noticed that it is only the arrogant leavers that ever confidently predict the future and time and time again their predictions prove to be wrong.

Urmstongran Sun 15-Sept-19 19:16:19

Since Jo Swinson confidently predicted that the LibDems would win a Commons majority of 300 seats (talk about setting yourself up for humiliating failure) on Andrew Marr this morning, she and the rest of the LibDem MPs should return to their constituencies and prepare for Government!
Jo Swinson, the greatest LibDem leader since Nick Clegg.

She said that. Without batting eyelid...

That will come back to haunt her.

GracesGranMK3 Sun 15-Sept-19 15:31:53

I think in the times we live in we could see a majority Liberal government. It would depend on how they perform whether the got voted in again but it is certainly possible the could be voted in once.

paddyann Sun 15-Sept-19 15:23:12

Scottish Sundays saying Swinson in talks with Tories re a coalition ...much to the disgust of Wee Willie Rennie who tells Holyrood regularly that Scottish Lib Dems will have nothing to do with the tories.
Thats Wee Willie Rennie ..NOT Willie Rennie McIntosh as Corbyn called him last month...lol THats mans lack of knowledge about all things Scottish is astounding...well for a party leader it is ,we know the rest of the UK has very limited info about us .For thosewho didn't understand the LOL ..its Charles Rennie McIntosh architect and artist and HE was famous unlike wee Willie !

varian Sun 15-Sept-19 15:17:55

That is not certain. There is no such thing as "certain knowledge" where our political future is concerned. All political parties set out their aspirations and the Liberal Democrat position on brexit is crystal clear.

Ilovecheese Sun 15-Sept-19 15:14:24

But the Libdems can't possibly believe that they will win a majority in Parliament. They can therefore make as many pledges as they like in the certain knowledge that they can break their pledges in a coalition.

varian Sun 15-Sept-19 15:04:16

A political party sets out in its manifesto what it would do if it gained power.

There is a clear distinction between what a Liberal Democrat majority Government can achieve and what could not be made to happen as part of a coalition, especially when the LibDems were the junior partner.

Be assured that a majority LibDem government would not have raised tuition fees and a majority LibDem government would Revoke Article 50 and Stop Brexit.

Ilovecheese Sun 15-Sept-19 14:06:05

"The Liberal Democrats have pledged to cancel Brexit"

But the Liberal Democrats have made pledges before, and then proved to thousands of young people that a pledge can easily be broken.
