Is Prince Andrew's protestation too little too late?

I think the Palace would have been wiser to have kept silent. It's short statement, filled with all with all the strong emotional words describing what any decent person feels concerning child abuse, only begs the question;

Why now?

Why so strong, now? Everyone knew this a decade ago. Andrew knew his friend had made a deal to avoid these kinds of charges in 2008. Why become so appalled now when he, Andrew, stood by Epstein even after some of his offending came to light?

Epstein died in a New York prison cell on 10 August as he awaited, without the chance of bail, his trial on sex trafficking charges.

In the announcement made on Sunday 18th August, Prince Andrew has said how appalled he is about the sexual behaviour with young girls his former friend Jefferey Epstein is accused of.

Yet he kept in contact with the billionaire sex offender after his 2008 conviction. He knew then that Epstein was on the Sex Offenders Register (USA). The photo of the two men walking in Central Park in 2010 led to serious criticism of the prince concerning his judgement about spending time with a sex offender and staying at his house. He was himself photographed with his arm around 17 year old scantily clad Virginia Roberts at Epstien's house, where he is also filmed smiling and waving through the door at young girls leaving.
To quote Jonny Dymond, BBC Royal Reporter:
"But to see him inside Epstein's house, as young women come and go, looking for all the world as if he was a happy house-guest, is a disturbing sight. And strong though the palace statement may be it, it fails to answer the central question.
Just what was Prince Andrew doing visiting the house of a convicted paedophile?"

It seems far too late, for me, that the Palace issue this statement after the death of Epstein. Why did not the Prince dissociate himself from this man's vile behaviour in 2008?
This was when he received an 18-month prison sentence, after a controversial secret plea deal, when he avoided up to 45 years in prison if convicted of sex trafficking and conspiracy charges, to which he pleaded not guilty, by instead pleading guilty to a lesser charge of soliciting a minor for prostitution.

It is too striking that this public protest of revulsion about the depravity of his erstwhile friend's activities has been made suddenly after that man's death.

Could it be that while Jefferey Epstein was still alive, there was a reason why he could not say, "the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behaviour is abhorrent." ? Would his erstwhile friend, perhaps, have testified with evidence to suggest otherwise?

I don't think so, gilly
I think we all know that Philip did have a reputation for enjoying the company of women years ago, but they were women, not young girls.
He'll be hauling Andrew over the coals, that's probably partly why he's disappeared.

gillybob Sat 24-Aug-19 17:10:31

He might say “ you have been very, very silly to get caught out........” wink]

gillybob Sat 24-Aug-19 17:09:24

Oh I dunno Annie he’s got a nasty tongue in his head . Bit of a temper I have heard too . Still I suppose he’s a bit old for fisticuffs grin

Anniebach Sat 24-Aug-19 14:20:46

I don’t think Phillip is ‘a nasty piece of work’, but he is not likely to say ‘you have been very, very silly ‘,

Whitewavemark2 Sat 24-Aug-19 14:18:50

AW continuing to deny he knew anything.

He needs to learn when to keep silent.

Wonder who supplied the private jet? Leaches! The lot of them

Callistemon Sat 24-Aug-19 14:10:04

Never too old for Dad to have him on the carpet gillybob!

gillybob Sat 24-Aug-19 12:26:52

I think I would take my chances with Anne but I could imagine Phil being a nasty piece of work .

Anniebach Sat 24-Aug-19 10:56:25

Anne, Zara and family are at Balmoral with the Cambridge family, wise of Andrew to clear off out of the country ?

Who would want to face Anne and Phillip !

Callistemon Sat 24-Aug-19 10:41:52

I wonder what his sister has had to say to him?

Anniebach Sat 24-Aug-19 10:29:13

The money was loaned after Epstein had served a prison
sentence. As it was for Fergie perhaps the Queen wasn’t the best person to ask !

I fail to see how he can continue with public duties after all this , there are still the court cases to come.

Things were not good between him and Charles before this.

There are some very rich people who are not spoiled brats.

Callistemon Sat 24-Aug-19 10:21:49

It's no secret that the Maxwell woman , P. Andrew and Sarah were friends, so is that news? confused
This was pre 2008 according to the article.

Davidhs Sat 24-Aug-19 10:17:07

What astonishes me is that someone so from the Royal family, high profile that the paparazzi target so closely should show such an appalling lack of character.
He knew that Epstein was no better than a high class pimp, yet he chose to socialize in his circle. It seems Epstein lent him money but that’s no excuse, he did not have to take it he could have gone to the Queen to get the cash.
He deserves all the criticism he is getting and more.

Secret visits ? Are all visitors to Buck House named to the press?

Andrew , after his divorce had an apartment in Buck House,
unless state visits why the need to inform the country who
visits anyone living in Buck House ?

When Anne was living in Buck House there was no announcement of Mark Phillips going there or any friends.

As for 1,000 lovers, how on Earth can anyone know this.

The chap releasing this to the press will have been paid , suppose after a jail sentence he needs the money.

Oh dear this is not just going to go away is it ?

Secret visits to a Buck House indeed . What next ?

Something your retired NHS nurse is wrong regarding costs.
In fact, so way out that I do hope she wasn't in charge of budgets.

Did he have HIV or cancer ?

Did he have a mysterious illness ?

Quite agree, Gillybob - and not just about the current lot. Passed down through the generations. Working class memories are short - we are too busy trying to pay taxes and making ends meet. Does anyone remember the stories of the mysterious illness that Andrew was suffering from when Fergie went off to learn to fly the budgie. A retired NHS nurse recently told me that more money is spent on treating HIV than cancer patients.

Anniebach Fri 23-Aug-19 08:57:45

I agree GrannyGravy

I think there are occasions when it is possible not to like what a child has done/said, but the maternal instinct is so strong and encompassing that the mothers love overrides all else.

Anniebach Fri 23-Aug-19 08:18:30

So what of mothers of children who have commited horrific crimes , perhaps they know their children don’t have a sense
of decency so would know they act like that.

I remember the mother of a serial killer being asked why she
travel from Scotland to London every month to visit her son
in prison. ‘ He is my son’.

Callistemon Thu 22-Aug-19 23:07:18

I'm not sure just how far maternal love would stretch. Perhaps none of us know unless tested.
Perhaps we know our children to have a sense of decency and that they would not behave like that.

Callistemon Thu 22-Aug-19 23:04:39

His friend was the predatory paedophile, his woman friend the 'madam', but perhaps PA is so dim that he thought these young girls were happy to provide services to powerful, rich old men and never gave a thought to the fact that they could have been groomed and were perhaps frightened and unable to escape.
Had he given any thought to why these girls were with Epstein he may have realised that, were it not for the privilege of their birth, they could have been his own daughters.

Anniebach Thu 22-Aug-19 21:02:40

Is he a predatory paedophile ?

Lessismore Thu 22-Aug-19 21:00:04

I would be more than let down if one of my children was a predatory paedophile.
