I think the royal family's lifetime and lifestyle, as it is now, is limited, but by how much I have no idea. Most of the senior family, that is the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Princess Anne, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their respective families all realise this and behave accordingly. The Yorks, all four of them, are disasters, and it seems as though Prince Harry, since his marriage, is also lacking in understanding.

There seem to be rifts developing between the Sussexes, the royal family and the press. Their snub of a visit to Balmoral, whilst relatively unimportant, received mild adverse comment; Meghan responded instantly with an unplanned trip to America, leaving her four month old baby. That to me suggests fingers up to the establishment, and also her Save the Planet stance.

If she wishes to be viewed as an independent woman then she must also live independent of the Privy Purse.

If you don’t care who replaces them why replace them ?

The royals have grand houses money given them travel free. They have the prestige of being Royal, best of everything expensive clothes. People bowing to you.

Agree they should be more like other people. I am not wasting my time talking anymore about them. The family firm they dismantled. I don't care who replaces them one family should not have so much.

I am with you. I would also like to cancel our obsession with the monarchy.
I think it is time to dismantle their lives to being somewhat closer to them actually working and living more like other people.

Obviously state owned properties would be different, but surely the president would need those.

Their official properties which they do not own are open to the public.

The queen owns two properties, Anne, Edward and William own one . Charles owns three, he bought two and inherited one. He bought one in Wales because there is no official residence in Wales

What a lot of rubbish. If they were just rich people they would still need staff. If we took back some of the properties they curently own we could open them to the public and put in a cafe-loads of jobs!

I'm not anti monarchy. I think the senior royals are doing a good job but the juniors shouldn't get away with hypocrisy. If they don't like the deal they should get jobs and support themselves.

I agree about the jobs created. It's an industry in itself.

Actually Bridgeit, very, very good points. I hadn’t thought of that, but I shall remember. There must be thousands of jobs provided by the monarchy across the various homes, estates, etc. Mind you, a president would also provide employment, but not so many I think.

I am not a Royalist in the sense of wanting to read / watch everything they do etc.
But it does make me a bit cross that some folk cannot see beyond the photo shoots, media hysteria & realise that the existence of the RF, provides employment & an entire industry from horticulture to cleaning.

Paddyann, it’s precisely because of such situations as Trump in America that I prefer a monarchy. They are expensive, but they do bring a lot of tourism into the UK. Plus they are exceedingly rich in their own right, so their lavish lifestyle is not entirely funded by us. If you read back on some of my other posts on this thread you will see that whilst I believe the royals have enormous costs, benefits and privileges, it comes with disadvantages, a loss of privacy, and many restrictions and obligations.
Anyway, a good king or queen, in my humble opinion, is one who is dutiful, discreet, dignified, respectful of their own position, mindful of frivolous expense, represents the UK on the world stage with humility and respect, and who knows how to keep their opinions to themselves. As soon as a monarch ascends the throne these apply. This is what I think a good monarch should be. Look at the queen and you will see all theses attributes and more represented in her. She is far preferable to any president.

pinkquartz what I am saying is that people can whinge and whine, and like this one and dislike that one, but in the long run it makes absolutely no difference to that family. They will continue to behave like all other rich people. In fact all the comments are just ways of agreeing in principle to the concept of monarchy, because you imagine in some way that they are important in everyday life, and that your approval or disapproval will in some way change them. It won't, why should it? I'd get rid of the lot of them. I really don't care what any of them do.
