Photos of Princess Charlotte's first day at school with her brother Prince George, show us how well their mother, Catherine, has fitted into The Firm.
Delightfully normal and without any pretentious, she and her husband simply get on with life, neither courting nor studiously avoiding the publicity that goes with the job.
She looks wonderful in the pictures taken by the DM and the family is a fitting continuation of our monarchy.

Nothing to do with my life Bridgeit I was brought up to believe there is more to life than thinking of myself and my family. That society matters and a social conscience is something to be admired. It is sad that some can only attribute wanting a more equal society to a desire for personal gain. I count myself incredibly lucky to have the lifestyle I have. But I am conscious that the lives of others are much more difficult and that the society I grew up in has been steadily eroded so that support for the poorest no longer exists as it once did. At the same time the media has recreated belief in the value of an inherited system of monarchy. You may not realise the two are connected but they are.
ten that toil while one reposes

Bread and Roses

As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill-lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing, "Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses."

As we come marching, marching, we battle, too, for men—
For they are women's children and we mother them again.
Our days shall not be sweated from birth until life closes—
Hearts starve as well as bodies: Give us Bread, but give us Roses.

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient song of Bread;
Small art and love and beauty their trudging spirits knew—
Yes, it is Bread we fight for—but we fight for Roses, too.

As we come marching, marching, we bring the Greater Days—
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler—ten that toil where one reposes—
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses.

trisher I have no idea whereabouts in the UK you are but at our local primary school they have an intake of 40 into reception class, which is a purpose built extra large class.

There are two full-time qualified teachers and two full time TA's.

From year One onwards the classes are approx 28, with basic streaming so children can learn at a pace suited to their ability.

It is an open plan state school.

All classes other classes have a full time TA, along with many parent/grandparent helpers for reading and arts and crafts.

One of our C when there and 2 GC one of whom started reception last week.

Good posts Brigeit

I don’t believe anyone was suggesting compassion for the the little girl, just captioning an event taking place for that particular family. Also allowing photographers magazines to earn / make money from the occasion

Bridgeit Sat 14-Sept-19 12:06:55

Pinpointing one child from a family is not a direct correlation.
The disparity of peoples lives does not come down to
The Royal Family /versus everyone else
It is sad & I feel for you if your life is not as you wish but to place the blame for it on the fact that TheQueen & her Family exists is just ludicrous

trisher Sat 14-Sept-19 11:53:37

It may Bridgeit but the idea that there are not children who come into school from disadvantaged families where they have experienced more and consistent neglect and poor parenting is just ridiculous. Sure Start gave many of these children a boost before they started school. It's another thing that this government has cut of course.
But hey one over priveleged little girl starting school deserves more compassion and publicity than the hundreds maybe thousands starting school without breakfast and not even knowing how to shake hands.

Bridgeit Sat 14-Sept-19 11:31:01

Neither poverty or wealth dictates who or who won’t suffer abuse.

Anniebach Sat 14-Sept-19 11:30:52

A curtsey to a little girl who is 4th in line to the throne but not to the second in line to the throne ?

Bridgeit Sat 14-Sept-19 11:29:34

Some / many

Bridgeit Sat 14-Sept-19 11:29:07

Children from differing backgrounds don’t easily make eye contact , abuse is not confined to one part of society, abuse, cruelty etc goes across the board!

trisher Sat 14-Sept-19 11:22:46

The days of Nursey assistants of TAs in every class are long gone Anniebach The very real cuts to education spending introduced by the Tories meant that they had to go. There's not much left to cut.I've never known head teachers protest in 50 years but they did schoolcuts.org.uk/story/2000-headteachers-downing-street/
You obviously don't know much about children from deprived or troubled backgrounds Annie they find eye contact very difficult and sometimes threatening. It can take months before they are able to allow you to get close to them.

Jabberwok Sat 14-Sept-19 10:58:30

Why would you curtsey to Princess Charlotte and not to Prince William?!!! There was NO curtsey ! The teacher bent her knees (which is the right way to bend!) to get down to the level of the little girl to shake her hand! She didn't have to do this when greeting her father for obvious reasons as the video makes clear!

Beckett Sat 14-Sept-19 10:12:54

Can't believe a thread started to say how sweet a little girl looked starting school has reached 18 pages!

Perhaps in state schools not all children are greeted personally on their first day but as has been said before, taking photos of a child of the RF starting school is a convention, if it wasn't done you could have photographers crowded around windows, invading the privacy of the other children - because photos would be taken one way or another. This way the photographers get their photos and the children and left alone.

As for the teacher's "curtsey" - doesn't everyone lean down when speaking to a small child?

Anniebach Sat 14-Sept-19 10:11:29

Gosh gilly your schools only have one teacher to 30 small
children? The schools my children and grandchildren attended had a teacher and nursery assistant.

The greeting of little Charlotte was public to protect the child from press intrusion throughout the rest of the term.

Anniebach Sat 14-Sept-19 10:06:20

Exaggeration again. Some have said children were greeted , eye contact made with the little ones, not hand shaking .

You obviously don’t make eye contact with tinies trisher you tower over them ?

gillybob Sat 14-Sept-19 10:04:20

I think is a load of codswallop . Imagine a teacher in your average primary, standing out in the yard waiting for each and every family to arrive in order to give them his or her personal greeting/handshake/curtsy . Who’s looking after the 29 or so who arrived earlier?

trisher Sat 14-Sept-19 09:58:22

Isn't it funny how those who support the monarchy greeted or had DCs or DGCs who were greeted with a handshake and those of us who don't never experienced it. Do you suppose they know in schools how we feel?

annep1 Fri 13-Sept-19 22:50:07

Thanks maddyone. Was very good.

gillybob Fri 13-Sept-19 22:37:54

Well we shall agree to disagree this time GrannyGravy smile but I can honestly say none of mine were ever greeted on a one to one basis or with a handshake /curtsy or anything other than good morning everyone .... in you come .

GrannyGravy13 Fri 13-Sept-19 22:14:16

gillybob I normally agree with your posts , but all our children and grandchildren were greeted personally

Anniebach Fri 13-Sept-19 22:05:20

There is an agreement between the royals and the media , the
media take photographs on the first day and no hanging around the school for more. Hence the first day of the little one being made public, there will not be another one.

This is something the royals have to do to make sure the children are protected . Rather like blackmail really.

gillybob Fri 13-Sept-19 22:03:52

Going out into the yard to meet/greet /shake hands with each and every parent and child ?? Really ? Don’t make me laugh .

gillybob Fri 13-Sept-19 22:02:36

Well maybe money and status buys that greeting / handshake / curtsy .

“We” are but mere mortals ....

GrannyGravy13 Fri 13-Sept-19 21:44:49

Having experienced first School day at Fee paying and State School all our children were greeted before classroom with a “hello I am”who” pleased to meet you and welcome.
