Climate Change Demonstrations

Pantglas2, people generally don't just 'not turn up' but take time off school and work for all sorts of reasons (dentist, holidays, illness) and life goes on.

I'd always encourage my students to attend protests and demonstrations. We have a chance of delaying the (inevitable, I believe) destruction of our planet. What could be more important? The greatest danger to the survival of our grandchildren are those who ignore the danger and resist change.

I suppose you are happy for your grandchildren and their grandchildren to exist in a world far removed from the comforts you have had in your life.

Can’t believe that some people think it’s ok to just not turn up at work - emergency services, schools? Seriously? Nope - the apples didn’t fall far from the tree!

It's good that people are aware and well done to them. School children should protest of a weekend though, I wouldn't have sanctioned that. However, everyone should start looking at the clothes we are buying and the water used in producing one garment. It's horrific. Also all those disposable items we use for convenience. We are the throwaway generation at a cost. We should start really thinking about those things we dispose of so casually. Nappies make me see ? the don't break down.

Yes Pantglas just imagine how wonderful that would be and how shocked all the governments would be and something might actually get done.

I went to our local demonstration and was proud to be part of it. I’ve no time for those who say it’s ‘bad’ to stay off work or school. There will be no future unless people take a stand.

I personally think it’s too late. Nothing will change because of those who CBA’d to do their bit, those who condemn others trying to make a difference, those who don’t admit there is a problem and the global hold of those whose aim is to make as much profit as possible and hang the consequences.

But, if there’s the slightest chance that the future can be saved for your and my great-grandchildren then I will support Extinction Rebellion 100%.

As a retired teacher I'm amazed that some folk seem to be more alarmed about taking time off school than the state of the planet.

My younger grandchildren went to school and the older ones went to work - they’ve been brought up not to let people down and I’m proud of them. Imagine if everyone had just swanned off protesting....

The educational aspect to taking part in the protest should not be underestimated.

If one of my two elder DGC had taken part in this , they would’ve been thrown out of school. I am so proud that neither of them did.

...because it would have less impact.

I think there aims are admirable, but cannot understand why they cannot demonstrate on a Saturday or Sunday which would not interrupt their education or others working day!

It was hugely heartening to see the unity on a global scale for this desperate crisis.

We've established now that the world's young people demand action, since their lives will depend upon it, so I sincerely hope that those currently in positions of power don't waste a single moment.

Just to remind all you hopers that Ban the Bomb demos got us nowhere, neither did marches against nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. We didn't succeed in stopping the Vietnam War and we didn't Take Back the Night.
Perhaps some of you are too young to remember the tremendous solidarity, the absolute certainty that we were right all those years ago? I assure you we knew we would change the world......

It's a pity you couldn't have been there, too.

I joined thousands in our local town, and the age range was from pram-riders to seriously elderly. The missing generation was 40 -60, and I suspect they couldn't leave work. But there were primary school children, pre-school children, secondary school from start to Sixth Form, and some of the university students who had managed to survive last night. (It's Freshers' Week.) Parents, Grandparents, and at least one great-grandma.

It was a lovely day, and all very good natured as we ambled to our local seat of power, the county headquarters. The posters were terrifying - witty, funny, thought-provoking, in the tens of hundreds, and no two the same as they were all home-made.

We all just hoped someone in power was watching and listening.

I have been bashing my head against the green wall for 50 years, and found it all tremendously exciting and encouraging.

I'm delighted by what they're doing. Two of my kids made a decision not to have children precisely because of the state of the world and especially what was then called global warming when they made that decision. I support them in that.
My son says if he feels the need then he and his OH will probably foster or adopt a learning disabled child. My youngest daughter has so many godchildren she's a version of the Old Woman In The Shoe and she pours love onto her godchildren.

For those who support the taking time off work and school. You won't be saying that when the exam results are poor ,nor when the taking time off work means your the mug that ends up covering for other people. Yes, I do admire that people will stand up for the planet but I think it should have been done at holiday times. Where are all the protests about the homeless in this country, people using foodbanks, worker exploitation, zero hours contracts, universal credit, where is all the protests about these things?

I went to our local event today. I’m with the young people all the way. I support all those taking time off school and work to protest about the inaction of all those who have the power to make changes but fail to do so.

IMO it’s the most important world issue of all time. Action is needed now.

So much more could be done if more people made their voices heard.

I was also very impressed with these brilliant young people,
and that they were given the media coverage that they deserve.

I am keeping everything crossed for them, that their protest brings success.

Did you see the children in Africa and in fact absolutely everywhere? Iceland everywhere. Astounding.

We used to protest but never managed such a global response.

Social media is certainly a force for good at times

You are right to be proud. It is the most important matter on the political agenda, vital to our survival, yet often dismissed or submerged by others.
