None of us are perfect (well maybe there are a few who think they are) and I think your efforts regarding CC are honourable Gabriella much better than mine . I do eat meat (although not often) I drive almost every day (not for pleasure) and I do like the occasional takeaway (once a month or so) . I don’t fly (although I would if I could as I would love a sunshine holiday) . I don’t study where my clothes are made but I don’t often buy anything new anyway.

Pass me the bucket...
(400 Posts)You can bet your bottom dollar that the Misses Wax, Lowe, Stevenson and Misters Fry, Rylance et al are not sleeping on the streets, are still driving or being driven in cars and using their electronic gadgets. Still eating foods transported over thousands of miles, still wearing clothes made outside the UK, still not sorting their rubbish as assiduously as the average Brit, still spouting ignorant hypocritical nonsense.
They make me sick.
All of them, a***** of the first water.
Gabriella, well done for all the things you do, I try to my bit, but I use my car every week, and I fly to my holiday destinations, though I admit I do not use private jets
. I think others have a nerve to criticise you quite frankly.
I had wondered exactly the same thing Callistemon, how did he get the glue through security? All liquids have to be in a plastic bag of a certain size, and less than 100mls. If he bought a ticket that would certainly explain how he got through as far as the plane, but since it has been widely reported that he glued himself to the plane, and considering that other people glued themselves to other fixtures in central London, then it’s not a wide leap to believe what has been reported, that is that he glued himself to the plane. Regardless, he apparently took glue through security.
Absolutely no one is saying he is a terrorist crystaltipps, what is being said is that if he could get through security with glue, it’s not beyond the possibility that a terrorist could also get through with something altogether more sinister.
The only place I have seen that he bought a ticket is here on Gransnet, otherwise I have not seen or heard anything about him buying a ticket. It would explain how he got as far as the plane, but not how he managed to get on top it unhindered. And often one has to walk though a tunnel which is attached to the plane door in order to board. How did he navigate this in order to arrive on top of the plane? Even if the passengers walked across the tarmac, how on earth did he manage to get up on top of the plane unhindered? I’m afraid this action has left a massive question over security and what others, with more evil intentions could do!
*I hope the above explanation doesn't put your nose out of joint after you tried so hard to cast me in a bad light.
as I'd hate your effort to be in vain*
But you don't care what people think? So why bother?
How do you find the energy for this stuff?
OMG! What if no one had noticed him?
Considering that they took my 50ml handwash off me because it wasn't in a polythene bag I am astounded that he managed to get enough glue through security to stick his considerable length to a plane
He wasn’t glued on, MissA, just perched up there. He posted online that he hoped police and security didn't take too long to apprehend him "because this is f**** scary and it's also a bit cold".

To answer your questions...yes, unfortunately most of my clothes are made abroad, unless one wants to pay Seasalt prices and tbh, they don't make underwear as far as I know nor do we grow cotton afaik.
I'm a vegetarian and only eat one type of fish.
I often buy food from local farmer's markets but do shop in M&S food halls and Waitrose, among others again, preferring. but not always finding, UK sourced products.
No, I do not make, eat or buy Christmas cake, pudding, mince pies, stollen, Panettone, wine, Champagne, beer or any alcohol as I don't like any of it and my AC don't like the cake, pudding, pies, Panettone or stollen either.
Nor do I like Indian or Chinese food so no extravagance spice-wise.
My last flight was 4.5 yrs ago.
I have been abroad by train and used local trams and buses.
I have a car and use it no more than once a fortnight, if that.
I recycle a lot and have complained more than once to my local council when I saw the refuse collectors emptying the food caddies into the part where the black bins are emptied.
They actually said that it didn't matter so I rang Veolia and complained.
I don't go on cruises. Don't even have my heating on yet as it's not cold and as I type this, my bedroom window is open on the 3rd notch.
I have a bus pass and a Senior rail card, both of which get hammered.
My water bills are £13 pm, gas £15 and elec variable, about £18-20pm. BB is £11.99.
I'm a low user and haggle for good deals so you see, all in all, I do better than most on GN when it comes to CO2 emissions and renewables.
When the UK clothing industry perks up I shall buy clothes made closer to home.
I hope the above explanation doesn't put your nose out of joint after you tried so hard to cast me in a bad light.
as I'd hate your effort to be in vain.
Surely glue is a liquid?
I feel quite peeved, considering the palaver I had the last time I flew to Scotland.
I’ve read that he had a ticket, Callistemon, went through security and up the steps to the plane, then jumped and scrambled onto the roof.
A protestor has glued himself to the top of a BA plane at London Airport.
What worries me is how did he manage to do this - where was security?
They could not remotely be described as terrorists, if so, the police would be able to come down with anti terrorist laws. No sign of that. Terrorists deliberately aim to cause terror - fear of violence, death. XR are overtly non violent.
It was said that people need to be able to get to work, which seems fairly reasonable to me.
It was found to be "hilarious" that people had the audacity to complain about getting to work being thwarted when the planet was dying.
For those who protest that they and their families can't afford to engage in such silliness because they need to work, my feeling is that most people have to work but some of them choose, when they are not working, to campaign for something they believe in.
"Pissing about in tents" is a very inflammatory way to describe the actions of people taking part in this protest. It may well be felt that some of their actions are misguided. I am sceptical as to the effectiveness of spraying a building with red colouring, partly because it may alienate people who might otherwise be broadly supportive.
However, a friend of mine who I would have expected to be very anti this protest was far less critical than I had anticipated. She said the sight of so many mums and dads with their babies and young children taking part in these actions had made her think about the dangers, both to her own grandchildren and generations to come. She, like me, was torn as to the methods being used but she certainly did not think that all these people should be described as "layabouts".
Perhaps, as I believe is the principal objective, these disruptions will concentrate the minds of future governments and encourage them to take the matter far more seriously than they have done so far. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, we don't have a great record on environmental issues and a lot needs to change - quickly.
I agree with a previous poster who said the almost exclusive concentration on the damaging effect of Co2 emissions is skewing what should be a much wider debate on our throw away society. No doubt someone will say that if you have ever bought plastic straws, balloons, wet wipes, bottles of water, garden pesticides, liquid soap, etc, etc, etc, you have no right to take part in or support these demonstrators' actions. I expect most people have bought such products but many of them are now changing their behaviour because. Through these issues being raised by various media and other organisations and campaign groups, they have become more aware of the increasing danger of pollution on land and sea and, according to some scientists, on weather patterns across the world.
Gillybob Your last comment reminds me of another group of people - idealists with no answers - not a million miles away from here.
Who mentioned blowing anyone up crystaltips?
I have read quite a bit about them recently and they have no answers . Just idealisms .
No violence involved. I don’t think anyone would be terrified of anXR protest. Peed off if you want to catch a flight and you can’t I agree, but I’m sure no one thinks they are going to blow anyone up. If they do then they haven’t read anything about them. They are non violent. If you don’t know what their cause is you obviously haven’t read anything about them either ( not just written by hysterical media, but by them). I support the cause but don’t necessarily agree with all the tactics. Yes they have succeeded in spreading the word internationally and hopefully our useless excuses for a government might consider to put climate change and the environment to the top of their agenda.
These stunts do nothing whatsoever for their cause (whatever that may be ?). They just serve to incite anger and fear into ordinary people trying to get on with their lives.
I don't know how they can possibly think this furthers the cause.
You always get the nutters.
Agree with that.
Just been reading about two protesters at the airport, one must have bought a ticket because he boarded a flight and then refused to sit down so the flight couldn’t take off. The police eventually boarded and arrested him. The second person, more worryingly, somehow managed to get through security, and climb on top of a plane and apparently he’s glued himself to it! How on earth did he get through as far as a plane and get on top of it? Serious issues for security here, very serious. If one person can do it, so can another, and that leaves the way open to serious terrorism. This one was carrying glue, the next could be carrying a bomb.
Yeah. They don't always get good spokespeople.
Oh they do know. My grandson told me very lucidly what the main aim is, but I'm 78 and fucked if I can remember It was for the government to ban the use of fossil fuels.
You know, partly I agree with Gillybob. I have to keep reminding myself that it's our grandkids futures that are at stake.
