Considering voting Tory?

If you want our NHS to be ended and replaced by a private health scheme then this is where your vote should go.

The NHS is for sale if the Tories win. You won't take it from me? Take it from former Tory Prime Minister John Major.

"The NHS would be as safe as a pet hamster in the presence of a hungry python if Boris Johnson, Michael Gove & Iain Duncan-Smith rose to power following Brexit."

Those who are unable to work through illness or disability (physical or mental) should of course be able to claim benefits. As should those who have lost their jobs should be able to claim whilst looking for employment.

Benefits should be a safety net, not a lifestyle choice, and there are definitely people who have chosen benefits over work.

I listened to the actual speech in which Johnson said the things that were quoted out of context in the post up thread. What he said is certainly open to a different interpretation from the one apparently dominant on this thread.

You will be shouted down, opal, by people who cannot see things from any perspective but their own. Nuances aren't allowed on this kind of thread. Hey ho.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 07-Dec-19 14:18:46

Even the Archbishop of Canterbury has warned in "a quiet resurgence of the seductive language of 'deserving' and 'undeserving' poor"

You have been brainwashed Opal. The reason we have an increasingly uniform system is because it should not be down to one or two people to decide when they could be either themselves, just not in want.

The cruel language used by those who think cruelty will cure poverty has been brought back from Victorian time by the Brexit Tories. With only one thing on their minds - how to make themselves rich no matter who suffers it could be you one day but I am sure you would see yourself as deserving if it was.

Opal Sat 07-Dec-19 13:55:56

Of course there are deserving and undeserving poor GGMK3, always has been since time immemorial, always will be. I'm not claiming to be the one that should decide, but I AM entitled to my opinion, based on my knowledge and experience of dealing with people from all walks of life during my career.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 07-Dec-19 12:59:11

you would see that I said that genuinely poor people should be supported

But you, with your attitude of deserving and undeserving poor but no knowledge or training, should not be the one to decide Opal

"What about somebody who has done everything in a sensible and responsible way, but is hit by circumstances beyond his or her control? Somebody who has always paid taxes and never wasted money on alcohol and cigarettes?"
If you had bothered to PROPERLY read my post, growstuff, you would see that I said that genuinely poor people should be supported and provided with adequate benefits. My issue is with people that, through their own choice, have never worked, have always claimed benefits and won't help themselves to improve their standard of living. And I think you'll find that's the case with the vast majority of hard-working people in this country. Nothing new there. You are deliberately mis-interpreting my posts, and you know it.

"BTW opal I wouldn't mind betting that I, as an individual, have paid more taxes than you have during your life." I really don't understand 1) why you think this is the case, and 2) how it is relevant to the topic. Or are you saying that those who pay more tax are superior to those who have paid less? Really? OK, let's have that conversation, growstuff.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 07-Dec-19 12:20:36

I think Boris is too intelligent to go along with what Trump wants.

A 2:1 from Oxford after that education. I doubt he's as clever as he likes to think. Add that to the fact that Johnson will do what benefits Johnson not what benefits the country so you really cannot be sure can you.

@LeeCamp

The consolidation of media ownership means that a few people control most of the news & which movies/TV shows get made.
These monopolies give them the power to control the spectrum of acceptable opinion & none of them want you to think about a world beyond capitalism AND war.

Come on Tory Bots, where are you? Usually I'm inundated with abuse.
Perhaps you know what I am saying is true and your feeble vitriol minds can't get your heads around it.

Look at any town centre.
Look at those in doorways wrapped in blankets in the boarded up shops.
Then look at the rich who have doubled their wealth during austerity.
Is this right?
Is this fair?
Is this the country you want?
The British people are better than this.

Wes Streeting

Remind me again how some of the poorest in our society are treated if they fail to turn up at the Job Centre?
@BorisJohnson
won’t turn up for his job interview with the nation. Everything about Johnson and his Government reeks of hypocrisy and entitlement.

Baggs Sat 07-Dec-19 10:10:36

I had a look at that businessinsider article. As expected, that is not the original source of Johnson's words. There are even inconsistencies between the title BI gives to its article and what it says in the body.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 07-Dec-19 09:37:44

gg13 you are right education is indeed key.

Education starts from birth, which is why Sure Start is so vital.

By the child gets to primary school without this early intervention, it is considered too late.

Baggs Sat 07-Dec-19 09:14:41

Thanks, growstuff.

growstuff Sat 07-Dec-19 09:06:18

BTW opal I wouldn't mind betting that I, as an individual, have paid more taxes than you have during your life.

growstuff Sat 07-Dec-19 09:04:45

I noticed that GrannyGravy. People like that could really do with being served a dose of reality.

growstuff Sat 07-Dec-19 09:03:26

I'd say it to your face, if you said that to me opal.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 07-Dec-19 08:57:47

Oops premature post.

The discussion regarding young mothers with multiple children emanates from a post by Opal-

growstuff Sat 07-Dec-19 08:57:11

Another fact (again, I'll look up the stats later) … The majority of children in single parent households have a parent in her (usually) 30s, who has been in a stable relationship.

The number of children in families with 3+ children is tiny.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 07-Dec-19 08:55:55

growstuff you are correct.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 07-Dec-19 08:54:37

WWMK2 Education is key as stated in my previous post.

growstuff Sat 07-Dec-19 08:54:26

I'll look for the stats when I have time, but it's obviously escaped some posters' attention that teenage pregnancies have been falling for years.
