I do not worry about getting a hard left government - if Labour were to win a majority - which is highly unlikely - and they decided to pursue a hard left agenda, their weakness in numbers would prevent them doing so. The checks and balances of the HofC would curb their ardour. I am guessing that any government that is elected would find themselves in a similar position.

You may say that trisher I certainly would not. Whilst I am not a Labour supporter there are numerous Labour MPs whom I admire and respect, they come over extremely well when interviewed.

Unfortunately the times I have seen DA interviewed, she has made so many "schoolgirl errors" contradictory statements and in my opinion seemed to be unprofessional.

I think that Diane Abbott is a good constituency MP.
However clever and bright she may be, I agree with Luckygirl that her media appearances are disastrous. Her thought processes appear to be slow; I don't remember her being like this years ago which makes me wonder if she has developed a problem which could hinder her if she ever were to take on one of the most important offices of state.

PernillaVanilla I must comment on Diane Abbot's excuse that her son refused to go to the local state school, so could she say no. Is she saying that at 11 years old she allowed her son total autonomy on all aspects of his life? I expect not. And how very fortunate that she could afford, not only to put her principles aside when it came to her son ( the ones she has to keep when it comes to other people's children!) but that she could afford to indulge his insistence. I agree that she comes under the most awful abuse at times which is totally unacceptable, but people forever making excuses for her failings is also wrong.

Why is Diane Abbott picked on? Well could it possibly be anything to do with the fact that she is a woman from a poor back ground, a woman of colour and she has been well educated and successful?

Why is Diane Abbot always so picked upon? She is clearly a person of ability having been elected and re elected to parliament from her constituency for 32 years. She came from a poor background, her father was a welder and her mother a nurse, both left school at 14. She managed to get into Cambridge university and on leaving secured admission to the civil service fast track scheme ( very difficult to get into even then). Her son actually asked to go to the independent school, and refused to go to the local state school - could she really say no?
DH and I commented yesterday that she clearly finds television interviews difficult, in fact both Matt Hancock and Michael Gove gave really bad performances in the last few days too. She really does not deserve all this petty criticism.
Jeremy Corbyn made it clear yesterday that if Labour formed a government we should not assume that any of the existing holders of shadow cabinet positions would remain in those places. There are so many capable young labour politicians now that in the Labour party as in the Conservatives most of the old guard will be moving over to enable younger talent to develop. I would so love to see Jess Phillips in no 10.

Firecracker DA and JC had a brief relationship in the 1970s. She was a member of the Shadow Cabinet when EM was leader - so should we assume that she’d had an affair with him? For all her achievements, admirable as they might be, she really is a total car crash when it comes to dealing with the media; which makes me wonder what she is like at doing her job.

And I do feel uncomfortable about JC giving top jobs to someone who was/is his lover. They are both consenting adults and what they choose to do is private is fine - but it really does smack of nepotism. It matters not one whit what her colour or ethnic origin is. That is an irrelevance.

What matters is that the right people are in the right jobs, based on their competence and relevant experience. She may very well fulfil those criteria, but the closeness of their relationship is bound to raise doubts about this.

I am no fan of DA and consider she would be a disaster as Home Secretary, however, it should be pointed out she does suffer with diabetes which if not controlled can cause confusion and dizzyness.

My objection is based solely on her political views
