Election canvassing

I haven't had a single knock on my door. Two leaflets, one from the Liberals and one from the Conservatives have been pushed through my letterbox. I don't live in an isolated area so I'm beginning to wonder if candidates have been advised to stay away.

During the EU elections the Labour party were all over our estate like a rash.

Currently the only leaflet delivered is from the Green's, delivered by the Royal Mail, so they must have good funding from somewhere.

Not a canvasser to be seen and no posters in windows.

Well the Tories must be getting worried, they've not come to our door in all the 20 years we've been here, but they came today. Can't believe they picked a day when I was at a funeral. No chance to use any of the comments I'd got saved up for them, my son just told them to go away! Apparently they had someone in a wheelchair with them to show they care!

I think we're getting more like US every day. Money can influence elections.
It's how the status quo is maintained.
If voting changed anything they'd ban it

I think a lot of the campaigning is via social media now. The problem is, whoever is the most cunning and the most willing to use every lie and trick in the book to get people's votes will have a big advantage, unless more people get wise to it. Of course, everybody has now heard about the "factcheck" site put out by the Conservatives, who decided to use the acronym CCHQ to disguise the fact that it had been produced by them, together with the fake Labour manifesto and the "doctored" interview between Piers Morgan and Keir Starmer.

And now the Conservative Party's big business pals are weighing in with large donations - that is single donations over £7,500, which have to be reported. The largest donation to the Conservative during this campaign so far is £1.5 million. No doubt that will be spent on similarly underhand and dishonest tactics.

That's a problem; we were discussing it today. Sometimes it's possible to post leaflets and other times they have to be delivered through lack of funds and there's always a worry that the two might overlap, I would imagine the Greens have very little funding compared to the two main parties. We tried very hard today to just deliver to homes that we felt were definitely occupied etc [and also arranged a lift for a young girl who was stuck in the back of beyond and was asking about taxis. It took up a bit of our time but we were happy to do so.

I’m fairly sure we have never had anyone coming to the house from any party.

We have had two leaflets from the greens, which my husband didn’t think was very green at all, one would have been more than enough.

Labaik Tue 26-Nov-19 17:22:14

EllanVannin; leafleting is incredibly time consuming and has to be done quickly. And a friend of mine was shouted at twice last week when out leafleting so sometimes it's better not to hang about, especially if you're on your own. It really saddens me that people are afraid to put posters up and that we're advised to work in pairs if possible....

Greeneyedgirl Tue 26-Nov-19 15:04:41

Ha ha, No but I have a high powered water pistol ???

MaizieD Tue 26-Nov-19 14:12:02

Hope you have a security camera, Greeneyedgirl ?

Greeneyedgirl Tue 26-Nov-19 12:57:01

I've got my Labour posters up and haven't had any canvassers, but am expecting eggs as I live in a Brexit area. (Hope it's only eggs!)

EllanVannin Tue 26-Nov-19 12:38:53

One leaflet, and that was just shoved through hurriedly as though the poster's behind was on fire. I didn't see sight nor sound of whoever it was.
Like I'll bother too !!

Callistemon Tue 26-Nov-19 12:27:23

Bromyard! Yes, you're right.

I am even more shocked, it's a nice quiet little place.

Greeneyedgirl Tue 26-Nov-19 12:10:36

Callistemon I read the attack on the women was in Bromyard, Herefordshire. Was apparently reported to West Mercia police according to Guardian on line. I checked before I posted. (They did say Hertfordshire on radio this am.) Dreadful wherever it happened.

For many years, I was a fixture on the doorsteps of a ward which I was elected to represent. I rarely stayed out after about 8pm and, if the names on the electoral register indicated an elderly person, often didn't disturb them. I wasn't too popular if I interrupted their viewing of Corrie or if the World Snooker Championship was at a crucial stage. I'm glad I don't have to do it now, especially in this miserable weather. Perhaps older, and otherwise staunch, members feel that canvassing is a (door) step too far!

Callistemon Tue 26-Nov-19 09:45:50

Perhaps I should go and make myself look presentable in case anyone comes to the door grin

Smileless2012 Tue 26-Nov-19 09:39:54

Nothing here at all.

Callistemon Tue 26-Nov-19 09:39:04

It happened in Hertfordshire, not Herefordshire btw.

Callistemon Tue 26-Nov-19 09:37:35

Grany this is shocking, but it is a massive leap to assume that the two thugs who assaulted campaigners were Tories.
No-one has been arrested as yet, so no conclusions can be drawn.

It must have been very frightening.

Hetty58 Tue 26-Nov-19 09:26:26

Leaflets but no canvassers here. I think they concentrate their efforts in marginal areas.

Greeneyedgirl Tue 26-Nov-19 09:17:47

I found this completely shocking Grany so checked it out. Two Labour women canvassers in their 70s in Herefordshire were attacked and one man in 70s in Rotherham.

I think this is very troubling when you consider what happened to Jo Cox. I despair about the level of violence and hatred which politics is fuelling in the UK at the moment.

Grany Mon 25-Nov-19 23:28:26

Labour activists in their 70s attacked and left with broken bones in two vicious assaults

Witnesses to the incident in Hertfordshire say that the attacker was female, and labelled the victim a “Marxist” and a “Trotskyist” before assaulting her.

It’s bad enough that Tories think they can get away with lying to the electorate; now it seems they think they can beat their opponents up with impunity.

We've been inundated with leaflets and personally addressed letters from our Conservative MP and from Boris. All except the Greens have been round knocking but missed us as we have a "No cold callers" sign. They left a "sorry we missed you" note.

Callistemon Mon 25-Nov-19 19:51:22

We've just found a letter from Borrie amongst our junk mail, perhaps we should read it.

Nothing from Jezza yet though.
Not even his candidate here.

dragonfly46 Mon 25-Nov-19 19:36:24

We live in a marginal seat. It is currently held by the Conservatives but I see Jeremy Corbin is targeting it. Our Labour MP lives 4 doors away and has not even bothered to introduce himself.!

silverlining48 Mon 25-Nov-19 19:29:12

We got a letter from Boris too in the post this morning. Sorry Boris, no can do.
