Many of us with heavy hearts I fear. Have any of you ex pats got room at the inn?

Spare a thought for those of us who do and fear this new government.

Feel just the same annifrance - and like you I am so thankful we no longer live there. Even more grateful my kids and grandkids will have the choice to leave and go as they please.

Driving to UK on Sunday- and for the first time ever, if it was not the grandchildren - all joy has gone. If it was not for them, I'd happily not go- and keep in my heart the GREAT, amazing, tolerant Britain I fell in love all those years ago.

Totally deflated and massively sad.

Just watching the news and feeling deeply depressed at the projection of a big Conservative majority. How can people vote for this lying, fascist shower. then they bring on the awful Priti Patel. Britain has lost its moral compass. I despair for my children and grandchildren. Thank God I live in France, not that things are wonderful here either.

At least I am in the middle of nowhere and can gaze at the snow covered mountains, receive the most in credible health care..

jura2, Labour came in 2nd to the Tories in the last election, so Grandads vote will count.

Young friends I know left China where they were teaching because of the constant pollution.

At least we do have free speech here - and the internet where we are free to criticise our politicians.

I don't think tactical voting would work in Grandad's constituency, jura and would not make the slightest difference.
Nor in ours, it would be more a protest vote.

I hope everyone's relatives in Sydney stay safe and are away from the worst pollution.

Not näive at all mancgirl - what we are lucky to have around here should be the same for all. That said different councils are Labour or Tory and have their own spending priorities.

Now that austerity is officially over, perhaps the country will get a reboot.

Reminds me of the joke -

An elderly couple discuss voting. As one votes Labour and the other always Tory, the husband says ‘look I know we always vote but when you think about it our votes cancel each other out anyway’.

They agree not to bother voting in the upcoming election and just go about their business.

Had an email about an hour ago from our proxy - just leaving to drive at least 1 1/2 hours each way to make our votes. Living abroad we can't rely on postal votes. The first time we tried, the voting papers arrived 2 days before the election - too late. This year the local council emailed to say that the postal votes would only be posted 7 days before the election and therefore insufficient time. It was suggested that i used my existing proxy.

One of my daughters also lives in North Somerset and voted Labour after doing a last minute check of the tactical voting advice as the LibDems and Labour have similar support in North Somerset but the majority of tactical voting advice was to vote Labour. She would love to see a "Portillo moment" starring Liam Fox in the wee small hours.

However before she voted Labour she did a "vote swap" with a Labour voter in another constituency where the Labour Party have no hope of beating the Tories.

Grandad1943, I also live in North Somerset and voted Labour, I live in hope. There were far more people voting today than I have ever seen. A Tory rep was there but everyone just ignored him. Hope this was a good sign. I actually feel quite upbeat.

I think you need to get things in perspective OP- many, many people will be horrified or alternatively despondent about tomorrow’s result, but we have to make the best of it whatever.

Yes, very depressed. I will see what the results are tomorrow. Can’t bear to wait up and look tonight. Reading some of the posts above on schools, hospitals, police, housing, libraries, care for the elderly, social welfare. Food banks, for God’s sake? How can the mass of the people in England vote for this? But I think they will. We will have to soldier on. Australia on fire. It has an air of unreality. Those of us who are old now have been a lucky generation. The threat to democracy. Some people here see it as not getting Brexit done, as they put it. But the threat is in the attacks on the press, on Parliament, on the judiciary. Could this be the last time we vote? Surely not.

I am expecting that whatever we wake up to nothing will be resolved. Our archaic so called democracy is heavily loaded and whoever wins will not be the vote of the majority of voters. It’s all shit basically, so expect that and you won’t be disappointed.

I too am worried about what we will wake up to tomorrow. Neither leader is inspiring but I think we should vote for the policy, not the personality. Hardest decision ever as there is so much uncertainty. Not like me to voice a political opinion but it seems there is so much at stake. Urmstongran don't think you live a million miles from me but the reverse is happening here. Library about to close, few days wait for doctor's appointment, hospital car parking fees apply. Would love to see a fair society where no-one is homeless, hungry or worried about surviving. Am I bring unreal and naïve - probably.

If we end up with an extreme right wing government 4allweknow I will have to live with it but NEVER accept it.
