Big Ben Can Bong For Brexit

I see in my Sunday paper that the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has said he would allow Big Ben to ring out to mark Brexit on January 31st, ‘If MP’s wish to do that’.
How refreshing that this Speaker seems keen to do his job impartially, so unlike the bombastic Bercow, who did everything in his power to force his own views about Brexit at every turn.

Well done to the Brexit "winners". Sajid Javid has stated that there will be no alignment with EU regulations - what a great boost to manufacturing and the SMEs who supply EU corporations wink

Seems there is going to be a lights display to countdown to our exit.

Isn't "bung" just another word for a bribe?

Is that how Big Ben's bongs will be funded?

Love that image you describe - I could even be persuaded to pay to watch that on Netflix, or maybe Britbox!!

I'm happy that leavers want to celebrate on the 31st January - fell free to haver as many bongs as you like, and as many celebratory drinks as you wish.

But ...

As we live in a democracy, it will not quell my campaign for the UK to rejoin the EU at the earliest opportunity. I have over 60% of people under the age of 50 behind me, and I am happy to continue to debate the case for membership of the EU for many years to come.

I, and I suspect around 50% of the UK population - who knows, perhaps more - will rally to the cause.

We have the example of one Nigel Farage to follow, who has tirelessly worked to achieve this leaving of the EU for a number of years.

It is a good example, but we will continue to debate and argue the case for membership - democratically of course.

Jura didn't even mention Help for Heroes. Why should I ask her?

jura2 Fri 17-Jan-20 10:50:03

vulnerable, ooops.

jura2 Fri 17-Jan-20 10:35:38

I am afraid I disagree. The threat to put 25% tarifs on British cars (well, car manufactured in UK... I believe there are no 'British' cars left) - is not due to Brexit - however, Brexit puts us in a very vulnerble situation, where we NEED a Trade Deal with the USA - and in such a position- we are under much more pressure to have to bend to Trump's demands.

As for Help for Heroes, I have never commented on the subject at all.

Oopsminty Thu 16-Jan-20 22:32:13

Jura2.

The threat has passed almost before it was issued

""The secret threat last week, first reported by The Washington Post, which cited unnamed European officials, would have seen the tariff imposed on all European automobile imports to the US unless Britain, France and Germany agreed to the ultimatum.""

Britain, France and Germany have agreed and the threat has gone.

So no

Nothing to do with Brexit

And it has nothing to do with Help for Heroes

Nor does it have anything to do with Big Ben Bonging

Oopsminty Thu 16-Jan-20 22:28:57

Ask Jura2

growstuff Thu 16-Jan-20 22:22:19

What does Help for Heroes have to do with Brexit? [Hmm]

jura2 Thu 16-Jan-20 21:20:51

Of course it is NOW to do with Brexit, as he can now dictate to us as we are desperate for Trade Deal.

Oopsminty Thu 16-Jan-20 20:52:01

In the meantime, Trump threatens to put 25% tarif on any car produced and exported from the UK

Only half the story, jura

It was a threat to all cars coming from the EU.

Nothing to do with Brexit.

All to do with Iran

suziewoozie Thu 16-Jan-20 20:50:13

If Help for Heroes is such a wonderful charity, you could donate direct to them

craftyone Thu 16-Jan-20 20:48:03

donated via gofundme, got there via brexit central and Mark Francois. I hope there is excess, help for heroes is a wonderful charity. Thanks for reminding me Merylstreep grin

jura2 Thu 16-Jan-20 18:18:40

In the meantime, Trump threatens to put 25% tarif on any car produced and exported from the UK - which will mean 1000s more jobs, in the most deprived areas, being lost.

But no worries - as long as we get Blue Passports (produced in France and printed in Poland) and Big Ben bongs- that is all fine and dandy.

suziewoozie Thu 16-Jan-20 16:07:09

There’s no way church bells will be rung, no way at all. As for BB well didn’t BJ say he was going to sort that out so that’s all right then.

Cindersdad Thu 16-Jan-20 16:03:34

They should concentrate on fixing Big Ben and not celebrating a decision which at least half of us think is wrong. Remainers will only be convinced if Brexit turns out to be not as bad as they fear, in the meantime it is more divisive to be triumphalist.

westendgirl Thu 16-Jan-20 15:51:11

Not sure about bell ringers . It is against canon law to use church bells for political purposes, so I believe.

MerylStreep Thu 16-Jan-20 13:35:48

Well we have put our money in. If the bell ringing doesn't go ahead the money will go to Help for Heroes, a charity I support 100%. I'm happy with whichever way it goes.

vegansrock Thu 16-Jan-20 09:59:58

Well I thought there wasn't going to be any bell ringing. If people want to celebrate thats up to them. They can toast all the people who have or will loose their jobs, all the split families and the hate crimes as well while they're at it.

lemongrove Thu 16-Jan-20 09:49:32

Haha, very good Urmston ?and perfect spelling too!
Like the result of leaving the EU or not, it is an important milestone for us in the UK, so perhaps A Bong or two wouldn't go amiss!
I will settle for a glass of champagne though.??

growstuff Thu 16-Jan-20 09:43:47

Why's it wonderful? Do you enjoy conflict?

Urmstongran Thu 16-Jan-20 09:32:22

Wonderful difference to see here between the bell-ringers and the hand-wringers.
?

vegansrock Thu 16-Jan-20 09:15:26

London is a remain city so there isn't much love for Farage here.
