Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 12:01:33

Where was that information sourced from jura?

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 12:01:06

As I said, the reasons are complex growstuff

Not all refuse help but some do, if we knew the answer to those we could help more.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:56:39

I had a conversation with a welfare officer last year and the opinion was that some people regardless of if they are ex-services or not get into a downward spiral and refuse any help on offer.

The tearing of the Nuclear Agreement with Iran and the intermediate Range Nuclear forces Treaty with Russia, have undermined peace and escalating a new nuclear arms race.

Russia has recently announced that is has developped hypersonic nuclear devices which can evade US missile defences, while the US is pushing ahead with new technology in smaller 'useable' nuclear weapons.

We are in a situation where all these developments could easily 'collide'. In this context, the assassination of Soleimani is pouring yet more fuel on the multiple and already very dangerous fires in the Middle East, with massive implication.

We currently have a environmental planetary crisis where a climate emergency is combined with a new Nuclear arms race.

Our Government should act by example by supporting the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, rather than continuing to develop a new arsenal of our own, and blindly following Trump- because our huge need for a Trade Deal makes us vassals. So much for 'taking back control'.

lavenderzen Sun 05-Jan-20 11:51:00

And in no way does it alter the fact that our servicemen do a wonderful job and should be respected for that.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:50:15

growstuff that is what the forces welfare outreach teams are trying to ascertain.

lavenderzen Sun 05-Jan-20 11:50:00

Yes, Trisher I think we are all aware of our ex-servicemen on the streets and are unhappy about the lack of care they receive when discharged. It is something that needs addressing urgently.

I didn't mention it in my previous post because that is a quite different issue to the one that is being discussed.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:48:37

growstuff do not use “buzzwords* just describe things as I see them.

growstuff Sun 05-Jan-20 11:48:11

Genuine question here for those who have stated that there is help available for former service personnel, but thy don't choose to take it. Why do you think that they refuse it?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:47:18

Chewbacca that is how I feel.

It’s not always easy being part of an army family but my pride and support of our armed forces will never waiver.

growstuff Sun 05-Jan-20 11:46:14

Is hysteria your new buzzword GrannyGravy hmm

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 11:41:28

You take every opportunity to knock the armed forces so I assume that if circumstances
ever arise that you or your family need assistance from them your conscience will make you decline their help

I would sincerely hope so GG13; I'd hate to think that my loved ones were putting themselves in danger for someone who clearly despises and disrepects them as much as one particular poster on here does. Let's hope they never need the assistance of our armed forces.

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 11:38:28

Armed Forces officials are working to ensure Britain is ready to back America militarily if asked

We don't have Blair in charge any longer.

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 11:36:12

rescue missions

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:35:43

Callistemon you are correct.

Hysteria running high on GN today?

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 11:34:16

Goodness me, I thought The Mirror was one of the despised tabloids which peddle misinformation!
reports claim

Well, the submarine is there to protect shipping in Straits of Hormuz is it not? It hasn't just arrived.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:34:03

merlotgran agreed but what we lack in ships we make up for in expertise and experience.

I would be happy to see more ships commissioned, it could bring employment to thousands.

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 11:31:31

Yes, theremare ex-servicemen and women on the streets, the reasons complex as with all homelessness.

However, there is a lot of help available for them from many charities if they choose to take it up.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:30:51

jura2 UK troops, submarines, warships, aircraft and Special Services are continuously deployed and armed worldwide.

merlotgran Sun 05-Jan-20 11:29:16

We don't have many ships to send, GG13 grin

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 11:28:53

Twitter seems to have invaded Gransnet too.

I suppose we should just ignore all the endless cut and paste jobs.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:28:01

trisher yes there are ex-servicemen on the streets and speaking from a position of knowledge there is an awful lot of support for ex-servicemen some choose not to make use of it.

There are people from all walks of life on the streets of UK and Countries worldwide.

You take every opportunity to knock the armed forces so I assume that if circumstances ever arise that you or your family need assistance from them your conscience will make you decline their help.

jura2 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:27:36

This from the Mirror today- we are already involved, up to the hilt- and if Trump asks us to act, we will have to. We are desperate for a Trade Deal- and totally isolated now from Europe. He says jump, and we will have to- and our troops will be right in it- then our people, families, grandchildren

''A Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine is ready to strike Iran if tensions in the Middle East escalate to a full-scale combat, reports claim.

The submarine, which is kept in the region at all times, is armed with 20ft-Tomahawk missiles which each carry a 1,000lb high-explosive warhead with enough power to destroy a building.

The weapon has a range of more than 1,550 miles, travels at a speed of 550mph and has a GPS guidance system allowing it to switch targets mid-flight.

Armed force officials are working to ensure Britain is ready to back America militarily if asked, amid fears of an "accidental war" between Iran and the US, it is said.

Elite operatives from the Special Air Service and the Special Boat Service were also said to be heading to Iraq, ready for rescue missions.''

GrannyGravy13 Sun 05-Jan-20 11:22:53

MerylStreep agree, our secret services should stay secret.

We have ships deployed in the Gulf to protect the passage of oil tankers, it is logical to deploy more in order to
keep this narrow straight open and safe.

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 11:19:36

Oh if only they had stuck to Twitter It's just occurred to me that actually maybe that is why Trump acted-bested on Twitter by someone -take things further and I've got a bigger gun than you have! It's what social media leads to an a massive scale.
All those posting about how I should be proud of our soldiers, have you considered that that is why there are homeless ex-military living on our streets? Because they are sold your pride on a major scale and enlist thinking they are doing something good and noble, the problem being that there is nothing good or noble about war, particularly when most of the casualties are civilians. But by the time they find that out they are irrevocably damaged and find it impossible to adjust. Perhaps if they were never told it was something to be proud of they wouldn't go in the first place.
