Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Absolutely correct growstuff, the politicians cause wars for others to fight. Like you and others on here I admire our armed forces and as far as I understand, they are highly trained and very professional. One of my sons considered joining the Air Force after he left university, but in the end he didn’t. When the Bush/Blair Iraqi war happened, I was so very relieved that he didn’t join up, and that made me feel so much more for the parents and relatives of those who were out there.
I don’t believe anyone is happy when their adult child is sent off to war, particularly when the instigator is American and wants our support in their war. Nonetheless our armed service men and women act responsibly and professionally as they go off to fight other people’s wars.

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 23:23:52

We already have troops in the region, but they are there to train, help and advise.

Our troops cannot be sent anywhere by a POTUS.

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 23:20:01

Nobody is 'happy' if their children or grandchildren are sent off to a war zone. Why on earth would they be?

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 23:15:42

"It is politicians who make life more unsafe by their decisions."

I agree with you absolutely Callistemon. I have every admiration for the men and women who enlist in the forces and fulfil some very difficult roles.

I just can't imagine how anybody would actually be "happy" if their children are sent off to a war zone because some screwball, who happens to be POTUS, thought it was a good idea.

Urmstongran and trisher President Obama did not give money – pallet-loads or otherwise – to Iran. He authorised the release of Iranian funds that had been frozen in the time of the Shah. That particular calumny has been circulated throughout social media on and off for some time. It is highly popular among the GOP, right-wing networks and a favourite of Donald Trump's – but it is not true.

Bridgeit Sat 04-Jan-20 23:10:16

If not proud, perhaps Trisher you could be grateful?

lavenderzen Sat 04-Jan-20 23:08:48

I hope the majority of people are proud of our armed forces, I certainly am. They do a wonderful job and should be treated with the respect they deserve.

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 23:06:40

Our Forces are deployed worldwide to help people in disaster zones too and those people suffering are thankful to see them.

Especially since so many charity workers have been found to take advantage of those suffering from the after-effects of natural disasters.

Who would I want to rescue me from an earthquake, a flood, a cyclone? Service personnel or someone from Oxfam?
I know which I would choose.

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 23:02:17

It's politicians who wage war trisher.

Our Forces are there for defence, not aggression.
Politicians decide where they need to be sent, not the Forces themselves.

It is politicians who make life more unsafe by their decisions.

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 23:02:09

So, trisher, You would be happy to live in a country with no security, no intelligence, no support in times of natural or unnatural disasters, no protection whatsoever?

Utopia?

Opal Sat 04-Jan-20 23:00:30

trisher your post is at best objectionable, at worse bloody insulting. If it wasn't for our armed forces, your life would be nothing like it is now, shame on you.

Opal Sat 04-Jan-20 22:55:33

GG13 take heart, I think the majority of the British public are very proud of their armed service personnel, and hold them in very high esteem. They should be encouraged to wear their uniform proudly, I would certainly show my appreciation whenever I saw them. Is it the official line that they shouldn't wear uniform when out and about in public?

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 22:54:55

its

Callistemon Sat 04-Jan-20 22:54:34

growstuff they were driving a Chevrolet because the US needs export markets

Yes, but it was the irony of driving a Chevrolet and shouting 'death to America' which struck me about that post.

Especially since Iran has it's own automotive industry too.

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 22:53:58

I'm sorry for the armed forces but I don't see why I should be proud of them. They chose to join up, in doing so they enabled governments to wage war in places where they had no right to be. Those wars killed thousands of innocent people and continue to do so. They also sowed the seeds of terrorism which threaten our homes and streets. They haven't in fact kept me safe they have made life more unsafe.
Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac.”
― George Orwell

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 22:49:20

So why the ?

Of course it's a job.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 22:41:47

I get so flipping cross that the general public of the UK are not proud of their armed forces.

In the USA their forces personnel are allowed to wear their uniforms wherever/whenever they wish, get free transport and upgrades and are respected.

In the UK all of our service personnel are advised and often prohibited from wearing their uniforms outside of bases and in public transportation, due to abuse and risk of assaults.

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 22:38:38

It's a job, a choice and when you enlist you are fully aware of the role, responsibilities and pay.

It's not the same as a conscript.

merlotgran Sat 04-Jan-20 22:36:01

It's a job? the forces?

Explain your post please, inkycog

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 22:31:01

It's a job? the forces?

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 22:28:58

Oh right! I'll remember that for next time.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 22:27:47

It's called "enlisting to the forces". Hth.

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 22:27:00

Cheap, point scoring jibes? What???

growstuff Sat 04-Jan-20 22:25:57

Why is it distasteful? Sorry, but I'm missing the point. What's it called if not "joining up"?

I'm not insulting anybody who is in the armed forces or who has relatives in the armed forces.

However, I wouldn't be happy for my own children to be sent off to a war zone, where they would have a high chance of being killed, especially one which had been created by a madman in a Florida holiday home.

If the UK does end up going to war, it will have been one which could have been avoided and the country's involvement will be unnecessary.

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 22:23:16

Exactly so merlot; but from reading this thread you'd think that concern, worry about the future and our families, is affecting just one person. It's not.
