Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Pompeo is trying to goad France, Germany and the UK into being more pro-active:

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/04/mike-pompeo-european-response-to-suleimani-killing

Let's watch how our media responds to this.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 18:26:46

Oh the irony - Chanting ‘death to America’ whilst driving an American vehicle. A Chevrolet.

Davidhs Sat 04-Jan-20 17:57:20

Iran’s most likely response will be terrorism against US citizens and their allies.
A direct response against US or Allied assets would provoke a response from the US probably starting a full scale war. Iran would not want that because the US could do massive damage easily and Trump would be crazy enough to order it.

Granygravy
Cyprus in May, fine and dandy ??

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 17:44:19

WadesNan thank you for sharing what your Middle Eastern friends say. I have read about negotiation being regarded as a weakness and your comment has backed this up.

Obama gave pallet loads of dollars to Iran to keep them sweet. It rarely pays to suck up to bullies.

GrandmaTrisha I can understand your anxiety and fury. We all love our children. A career in the Armed Forces isn’t an easy decision and we owe our lives (literally) to these very brave men and women. I hope this situation calms down or at the very least is target specific (as in this drone attack) enabling as little loss of life as possible for the ongoing conflict.

jura I read that the FO will have been aware of the unfolding situation even though they weren’t informed officially through diplomatic channels.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Jan-20 17:36:32

I don’t think that was called for indycog. Honestly you do seem to revel in your acerbic one-liners don’t you?

Chewbacca Sat 04-Jan-20 17:33:05

confused ?

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 17:11:55

Well ain't that fine and dandy.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:44:01

We are going to Cyprus in May as usual.

We are an army family so well aware of risks /circumstances.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:21:33

and then? Don't you have to take into account those differences when it comes to consequences and their likely response- with the finger on the nuclear button and our forces and massive danger so close to Europe and UK.

I certainly would not go to Cyprus now due to this poor girl's ordeal- but also due to such close proximity to Syria.

GrandmaTrisha, I am so sorry to hear. I was thinking in replying above about how worried anyone with loved ones in the forces must be.

WadesNan Sat 04-Jan-20 16:17:49

jura you have to take into account different cultures and different attitudes if you are to understand your enemy - something I am sure America's enemies do.

GrandmaTrisha Sat 04-Jan-20 16:12:22

My DS is currently at the beginning of a seven month deployment with the army in Iraq. What was going to be a somewhat 'average' tour has now turned into a nightmare & I can't sleep at night for worrying about him and the whole volatile situation out there.

Add to this that my DIL and grandchildren ( his wife) have had to flee from their home in Australia and it's been a great start to our new year. Their PM should have done something about those fires months ago.

I can barely contain my anger at these two thoughtless men that have put my family in such great danger.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:12:01

and then ... Wadesnan?

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 16:11:14

It was used in other wars- like 'they' or 'Gerry' in Germany, to de-humanise people, children, women, grannies ...

WadesNan Sat 04-Jan-20 16:10:54

No - I am saying you shouldn't be surprised that those from other cultures have different attitudes which should be taken into account when dealing with them.

inkycog Sat 04-Jan-20 16:04:59

I don't suppose anybody is interested ,but my question about the use of " they" was not a nit picking pedantry.

I feel nervous when sweeping generalisations are made.

jura2 Sat 04-Jan-20 15:54:21

So- you just go for full on WW3 then?!?

WadesNan Sat 04-Jan-20 14:39:03

Some years ago I worked with several people from Middle Eastern countries. We had many discussions regarding the differing attitudes between our cultures.

Whilst we in the West tend to lean towards negotiation and talks, in many Middle Eastern countries that is looked upon as a weakness to be exploited.

It is called diplomacy jura2 keep your friends close but keep your enemies even closer.

so... is that you our Government was not warned of his actions or consulted??? Diplomay my foot sad

Ilovecheese Sat 04-Jan-20 13:11:01

Grannygravy13 Listening stations or not, our Govt should have been officially informed of an intention to commit an action that could put British soldiers in danger.

MerylStreep Sat 04-Jan-20 12:52:18

trisha
I think is irrelevant as to who killed the most. The point is: they were both Iranians ( for the pendants I probably should have named these evil bastards and not used they)

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 12:49:06

He was GrannyGravy13 but some of the people he killed were Islamic State fighters. You know the ones lots of people on GN go on about having their British Citizenship revoked. The ones who tried to take over Syria. They will probably be celebrating along with the Americans-weird isn't it?

trisher Sat 04-Jan-20 12:45:59

GranyGravy13 That just isn't true. The amount of torture and killing under the Shah has been debated. Some say there was more political repression then. It's never been an open society.

No worries Callistemon

It’s a very sensitive and serious situation, I have mixed views after reading up on this General he was responsible for loss of thousands of lives across the Middle East.

It is difficult for the West to understand the mindset of rulers of Arab nations.
