Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

MerylStreep Fri 03-Jan-20 20:32:25

Urmstongran
Yes, 'they'? burn the US flag every week. I didn't think 'they' could hate them anymore than they have done for how long?

varian Fri 03-Jan-20 20:26:49

We are just about to travel to the Middle East and we would rather like to come back safely, without being mistaken for Americans and becoming targets for revenge.

inkycog Fri 03-Jan-20 20:22:28

" they"?

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 20:15:15

Channel 4 news has just said the American attack will make Iran hate the United States.

Haven't they burned the American flag every week for the last 40 years?

inkycog Fri 03-Jan-20 19:59:08

So yeah, a good day .

inkycog Fri 03-Jan-20 19:57:38

The Iranian supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, ordered three days of mourning and declared that the US would face “severe revenge” for the killing of Suleimani, who ran Tehran’s military operations in Iraq and Syria.

The incoming commander of the Quds Force, Esmail Ghaani, was quoted on al-Jazeera as saying: “We tell everyone, be patient and see the dead bodies of Americans all over the Middle East.”

This Is not the action of a strong stable president. It's the reaction of a man who believes his way is the only way and the right way.

I was relieved to see Dominic Raab calling for calm.

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 19:36:11

The US administration didn’t tell the Democrats either ahead of the strike!

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 18:51:30

Apparently no one from the US bothered to tell Boris about the attack. Shows you how close the special relationship is. I bet Boris is thinking "What the F* did I want this job for." Still no comment from him.

This may offend, you have been warned!

Donald Trump: "yeah, we've killed Qasem Soleimani! I, the Donald, have saved you from a possible terrible, terrible fate." , (that should distract from the impeachment!" )

Trump Supporters/Red Necks : , "Yay! Never heard of the guy, but he sure sounds like one of those rag head terrorists, way to go Donald!"

grannyactivist Fri 03-Jan-20 18:35:05

Well let’s put this fight in the playground. When two belligerent children get in a fight with each other do we stand on the sidelines egging them on, or do we pull them apart and encourage them to seek solutions to their differences?

JenniferEccles Fri 03-Jan-20 17:11:56

I thought it was widely believed that Trump’s impeachment would actually strengthen his support rather than to have a negative effect on it.

Not what the Democrats had hoped for I’m sure.

Grany Fri 03-Jan-20 16:57:41

Jeremy Corbyn

The US assassination of Qasem Soleimani is an extremely serious and dangerous escalation of conflict with global significance. The UK government should urge restraint on the part of both Iran and the US, and stand up to the belligerent actions and rhetoric coming from the US.

Angela Rayner ?

The PM must at least get off his Sun lounger to make some kind of statement on the US attack killing the senior Iranian general and the escalating dangerous situation between Iran and the USA. Leaving it to the hapless Dominic Raab will not suffice ?

Callistemon Fri 03-Jan-20 16:25:59

This is to deflect attention from the bad publicity attending his impeachment and forthcoming trial.
That is a very interesting point ybnb

GrannyGravy13 Fri 03-Jan-20 16:23:09

I like to think that if the UK Embassy was attacked that we would retaliate.
Not doing anything sends the message that a Country is weak.

Chewbacca Fri 03-Jan-20 16:19:46

My heart sank when I saw the news. Another fine mess Trump has got the world into.

quizqueen Fri 03-Jan-20 16:19:14

How is the President of the USA supposed to react when it's embassy and staff are attacked...just say, 'Whoops, never mind perhaps they won't do anything again if we ignore them'. Iran is the enemy here, and Iran is the one looking for a fight.

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 16:14:11

And it's never about oil is it?

Riverwalk Fri 03-Jan-20 16:06:25

This killing is a godsend to the Iranian regime - they love to have outside enemies. Along with other countries in the ME there have been many demonstrations by ordinary people against the government, and many have been killed in the streets in the past few months.

How can they now dare demonstrate - they'll be seen as traitors.

Trump's action will strengthen the hand of the hardliners I fear, rather than lead to its downfall.

Oh, and it's election year in the US - every president needs a good war.

Luckygirl Fri 03-Jan-20 16:01:15

My worry is that UK will be drawn in, as Boris will be so keen to strike trade deals with US, so we will be open to manipulation. I makes me shiver.

inkycog Fri 03-Jan-20 15:59:55

I read it all and thought about it all. I find it to be full of huge sweeping generalisations and mis information.

" starting stuff"..... The whole region is fraught with very complex, long standing issues. I think it's terrifying not a Good day for the world.

trisher Fri 03-Jan-20 15:56:15

Mm there was a program about this man on TV some time ago. He was a military man and a bit of a military genius. Now I don't approve of militarism but neither do I applaud it for my own country but condemn it in others.
This is an interesting video. Although he had been active against the US he was also responsible for fighting Islamic State. As IS are funded by Saudi Arabia you have to wonder.....?

My first 2 paras were more insightful I thought. Shame you just picked up on the last one Inkycog!

Urmstongran Fri 03-Jan-20 15:50:39

Well said maddyone.

Nope I’m not enjoying this news Inkycog just giving my own opinion. As others do.

maddyone Fri 03-Jan-20 15:19:55

When I was teaching I worked with some Iranians and found them all to be very pleasant and very ordinary people. My son has friends who are Iranian and we all get on well with them. I don’t think ordinary Iranians are the problem, it’s the rulers of Iran. It appears that the man who was killed yesterday was inciting terrorism and was apparently an absolutely vile man, or that was what was reported today.
