Two days into the New Year and Trump sets the whole of world peace into jeopardy There will be huge repercussions

Besides the Iranian general an Iraqi general was killed. Understandably they aren't happy about this. Can we really build friendships and allies if the US goes around killing people at whim?

Jura2, you are right to be concerned. Liberal/conservative ideologies set aside, Trump is a SCARY, impulsive narcissist interested mostly in his own approval rating. Almost every Tweet, rally speech, and reply to the press includes a reference to it as well as overblown rhetoric designed to appeal to his base.

In 2011, he stated multiple times that Obama would start a war with Iran to get re-elected. Here's one statement: Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He’s weak, and he’s ineffective. So the only way he figures that he’s going to get reelected — as sure as you’re sitting there — is to start a war with Iran.

Until recently, he didn't even know who Qassem Soleimani was.

**A couple of Trump's chest-puffing Tweets:

These Media Posts will serve as notification to the United States Congress that should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner. Such legal notice is not required, but is given nevertheless!

Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have..targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD.

**Just a few of the headlines covering whole groups of professionals giving us warnings:

From 12/5/19: 350 Mental Health Professionals Warn Congress That Nuclear-Armed Trump 'A Threat to Safety of Our Nation'

From 11/19/19: Top Military Officers Unload on Trump - The commander in chief is impulsive, disdains expertise, and gets his intelligence briefings from Fox News. What does this mean for those on the front lines?

Re/ a post from above: The US will not be bombing Iran. If, and I repeat if, there are targets or people the US want to take out, it will be done by drones.

No difference. Drones drop bombs

I have no idea what the truth is or who, if anyone, is telling it. Anyone who says different is a fool imo.

Opal Tue 07-Jan-20 20:21:57

Either the General was a terrorist and was planning further atrocities, or he wasn't - that IS a binary choice, and I believe the Americans.

suziewoozie Tue 07-Jan-20 20:11:35

It’s not like biological sex - it’s not a binary choice as to who to believe.

Opal Tue 07-Jan-20 20:03:05

I'd rather believe the Americans than the Iranians!

suziewoozie Tue 07-Jan-20 19:59:57

I don’t believe a word that Trump or his administration utter about anything and least of all about the ‘information’ they had about threats from the General.

I liked the bit where Ben Wallace said to JC “I’m here representing the PM as he is busy getting on with the business of leading the country - something you will never be able to do. And it’s a shame that I’m here before you now with the experience of this department to calll upon, ready to answer any well thought out questions - yet you seem focused instead on supposedly dodgy deals with the Trump administration post- Brexit.”

Opal Tue 07-Jan-20 19:49:38

And you think we were "safe" before he was killed? Why? He was apparently planning further attacks anyway! One less terrorist to worry about, as far as I'm concerned.

Iam64 Tue 07-Jan-20 19:43:38

Urmstongran, it's no secret I'm not a fan of Jeremy Corbyn. However, I don't agree with you that Ben Wallace made mincemeat of JC in the parliamentary debate this afternoon. In my view, Corbyn asked the right questions and was right to suggest that the state sponsored killing of the Iranian General left people in Iraq and in Europe much less safe than were

You can take out a munitions storage. You can take out an empty building.

absent Tue 07-Jan-20 18:28:57

I note that several posters routinely use the euphemism "take out" rather than assassinate or kill. Does it imply approval of assassination, which in this case may well have been contrary to both international and American law?

prestbury Tue 07-Jan-20 17:57:04

Ben Wallace is also the Defence Secretary

MerylStreep Tue 07-Jan-20 17:50:11

jura2
I think you missed your calling as a teacher. You should have been a lawyer. Every time your boxed into a corner you deflect onto something totally irrelevant.
Your only problem is: you think we are too stupid to see through it: Wrong!!!

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:44:16

''jura2
How rude!!! and who on Earth is Ben Wallace
He is our defence secretary.
And this from you who professes to know all about our country and parliament!!!''

yes, all 3 on fron bench are unknown to most - this is the first day in Parliament - and the front bench looks like unknown newbies to the world. I would have expected that in such a difficult situation, both at home and abroad- you would have the PM facing the House and other well-known figures.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:35:38

Thank you MerylStreep for some unknown reason only half of my post “posted” (I am such a technophobe)

Urmstongran Tue 07-Jan-20 17:35:26

Biography
Ben Wallace was appointed Secretary of State for Defence on 24 July 2019.

Education
Ben attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and Millfield School in Somerset.

Urmstongran Tue 07-Jan-20 17:33:17

I imagine Boris is getting to grips with the situation in Iran.

BW is the Defence Minister. He made mincemeat of JC this afternoon.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:11:19

Ben Wallace is MP for Wyre and Preston North

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:10:03

Hopefully jura2 he is in his office at No.10, having telephone conversations with World Leaders trying to soothe the current situation between Iran and USA.

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:08:39

And who on earth is Ben Wallace and the other 2 guys in the middle of the front bench ???

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 17:06:23

And today in Parliament, our so called Prime Minister is still no-where to be seen sad

www.facebook.com/Channel4News/videos/563517600865000/

and JC asks the right questions.

jura2 Tue 07-Jan-20 16:42:36

Nobody knows - anything could happen. The development of new 'useable' nuclear weapons make a first strike so much more possible- and then ..

I certainly pray (in my own way) but YOU are right.

JenniferEccles Tue 07-Jan-20 16:39:45

There’s a difference between being concerned and ridiculous scaremongering .

I am sure most people are concerned but it’s very irresponsible to blow it all out of proportion by claiming we are on the verge of war.
