Callistemon ''Where?
Iran?

Or do you mean Iraq?'

NO Iran

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 18:55:16

I don't think its "playing devil's advocate" Callistemon; I think it's more a case of having very little real knowledge of what life in Iran is actually like for ordinary citizens. Spouting sound bites of holiday destinations and women cyclists isn't the same as having knowledge or understanding of what life has been like in Iran since Ayatollah Khomeini returned from exile.

Mr Johnson trying to straddle both sides of the argument. I hope he remains steadfast in refusing to allow us to be drawn into any war.

Urmstongran Sun 05-Jan-20 18:49:41

Breaking news from BBC:

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said "we will not lament" Qasem Soleimani's death, describing him as "a threat to all our interests".

But he called for "de-escalation from all sides" following the killing of the Iranian general in a US airstrike in Iraq.

lemongrove Sun 05-Jan-20 18:49:08

trisher after reading your posts on Iran ( in jaw dropping amazement) I had to laugh when you wrote to Callistemon that she ‘had only a slight grasp of reality’ ?
I expect Corbyn would agree with you though, he may plan a lovely cycling holiday there this year.

It was possible to travel and live freely in Iran until the Ayatollah took over. I've friends who lived and worked there but had to leave when everything changed. Photographs taken show them all wearing western clothes and friendly relationships between various nationalities, including Iranians.

Police Officers, fire personnel, social workers, teachers, NHS staff are amongst many who find themselves struggling psychologically because of their work experiences. Or because something happening in their personal lives is impacting on their ability to work effectively. All those organisations offer counselling services to their employees. Free of charge and confidential. Very much like that on offer for current and former military personnel. The difference I suspect, is that the military are less open to the reality of the psychological trauma its employees can suffer. The police used to be very similar, but thankfully has moved forward. If you're living on the streets, drinking and taking drugs, engaging with therapeutic services of any kind is unlikely

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 18:43:04

No-one has any illusions!

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 18:42:00

Where?
Iran?

Or do you mean Iraq?

rosecarmel Sun 05-Jan-20 18:41:35

And lovely rugs ... ugh ..

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 18:41:16

Well, let's hope they will be fine.

Destroying those would be an act of terrorism.

jura2 Sun 05-Jan-20 18:40:48

Persia was one of the most advanced culture ever - so the destruction is tragic, wherever it comes from.

We are friends with Saudi, because of oil and (and arms sales)

We are enemies of Iran, because of oil

anyone who believes we are there to save anyone or help with human rights, is just 100% deluded sad

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 18:34:12

I do wish I could go to Tehran lthough and travel through Iran it has some great Persian historical sites.

Callistemon Sun 05-Jan-20 18:30:54

Did you read my post properly trisher?
Obviously not!

I said both were as bad as each other fighting a proxy war in another land.
But misinterpret it as you wish.

Personally, I prefer Devon or Cornwall although I am sure your friend enjoyed Iran.
What did Mandy R-D say?
He (she) would say that wouldn't he (she)!!

You did call Army Welfare personnel bullies.
would you expect the victim of bullying to accept counselling from the bully?
Clear and precise.

Do you really believe what you post on this thread or are you just playing Devil's Advocate?
You are not normally like this.

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 18:30:33

Chewbacca I didn't say Iran is free thinking and liberal, I did say it was moving forward and attempting to normalise things. It takes time. But things were in the process of changing. What will happen now is unknown. Personally I have huge doubts about why Trump has acted now. Iran is a poor country and as has been posted many times on GN many people arriving here are economic migrants. (apparently not Iranians though). I don't dispute there is a reactionary Islamic government, I just don't see how an attack on a local hero will help to create regime change. And perhaps it wasn't intended to.

rosecarmel Sun 05-Jan-20 18:29:16

Iran dropped nuclear deal ..

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 18:08:51

Correction 400,000+ not 4000,0000+

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 18:04:54

Urmstongran There are currently 17 women in the Iranian parliament, not many but they are there.

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 18:04:29

I'd be willing to take on board that Iran is as free thinking and liberal as you say trisher but the reports coming from the Iranian nationals who are willing to risk their lives to get the hell out of there, seem to contradict your claim. So who has a slight grasp on reality? You? Or the 4000,0000+ (as at 2016) Iranian people who fled for their lives to other countries and continue to do so?

Fennel Sun 05-Jan-20 17:58:21

Our eldest and his family have been living and working in Kuwait since 1995. Kuwait is a tiny country right on the doorsteps of Iran and Iraq.
Thank God they had the sense to find jobs elsewhere - son finished his contract there at the end of 2019. His wife and children left earlier.
The situation is very frightening, I hope BJ isn't stupid enough to commit us to supporting Trump.

trisher Sun 05-Jan-20 17:55:33

Callistemon As far as a holiday destination is concerned a friend has just returned. And there are lots of websites advertising holidays.
It isn't illegal to ride a bike and women are protesting about being told they shouldn't ride one emirateswoman.com/women-iran-defy-fatwa-get-bikes/
There are more women working in Iran than in Saudi and they are better educated.
If both regimes are as bad as each other why are we attacking one and befriending the other? -possibly because one only kills Yemenis?
We could of course forget the Saudi funding of Islamic State.
It is sad that you accuse me of posting propaganda when you have such a slight grasp of the reality.
As for the Army I didn't call them bullies. I explained the inability to use welfare services may be because it was supplied by the people who caused the damage.

Has it crossed your mind that you wouldn't last 5 mins in Iran with your out spoken views, probably not ?

Chewbacca Sun 05-Jan-20 17:41:08

That's because this thread is about Trump. And Iran. Not Saudi Arabia.

MerylStreep Sun 05-Jan-20 17:40:29

If Iran is returning to ordinary life why did Soleimani have killed hundreds of young male Iranians who were protesting for an ordinary life
