What a truth! Racist remarks are racist what ever your colour!

tickingbird Thu 23-Jan-20 07:22:48

Labaik The Sikhs were killed by other Sikhs, apparently in a drunken argument over money. Nothing whatsoever to do with LF! For the record he said nothing defamatory anout Sikhs.

growstuff Thu 23-Jan-20 01:26:15

Joelsnan That is really not what he said in the original interview. He's rationalising and making excuses after the event.

Labaik Thu 23-Jan-20 00:30:54

Have been away for a while and have made a point of not watching much tv or accessing the internet but, having just read some of this thread the first thing that crossed my mind was that several Sikhs have been killed over the past few days. Is this just a coincidence or is it something to do with what has been said by Lawrence Fox?

I watched him on GMB and as 3nanny6 said Piers Morgan did not agree with his comment about the Sikh soldier for all the reasons mentioned. However, some of the following points LF made were perfectly valid, that we should all be entitled to express an opinion without being threatened or torn to shreds. And that is absolutely true, I am with him on that. I do not defend what he said but I defend his right to say it.
I do not think he was looking for the 'sympathy card' when he mentioned that he has a son and had death threats. He was simply pointing out the unwelcome consequences of giving an opinion.

Dollymac Wed 22-Jan-20 23:02:45

No, I don't agree that is what he meant Joelsnan. I don't think that is what he meant at all
I think that I 'get' LF; he is a privileged, privately educated, white male, whose opinions belong in the 1950s
He refuses to date women under the age of thirty five, as they are too 'woke'
Maybe they are too 'smart' to entertain a tosser like this

Joelsnan Wed 22-Jan-20 22:42:06

Dollymac
I think what he was saying was that he did not enjoy the ‘tokenism’ of including one single Sikh soldier in a film when it is known that there were brigades of soldiers from the Indian and other commonwealth countries fighting in the First World War. Either acknowledge them properly or don’t include just one.

Dollymac Wed 22-Jan-20 22:29:24

Laurence Fox spoke about a lone Sikh soldier spoiling his enjoyment of 1917.
One of six soldiers in WW1, were from the sub continent
In the chaos that surely reigned, why would it be implausible that a Sikh would be in the company of other soldiers?
You know, soldiers who ALL fought for Britain...
I feel so sad that his opinions, can be defended, there is absolutely no defence for bigotry

Doodle Wed 22-Jan-20 21:07:27

Of course his career will survive. I watched QT and feel that was said by both parties was not repeated in proper context. I do not believe the whole reason for Megan leaving the country was racism. It may be a part of the reason but certainly not the whole reason.

MawB Wed 22-Jan-20 19:33:50

I don’t imagine LF (or his agent) are shaking in their shoes one little bit either.

Chewbacca Wed 22-Jan-20 18:08:49

I don't think LF's career will survive this, actually.

Don't be ridiculous jura.

Callistemon Wed 22-Jan-20 17:52:28

She involved herself.

Oopsminty Wed 22-Jan-20 17:51:34

Lily Allen is involved in the saga now

jura2 Wed 22-Jan-20 17:45:06

This thread is NOT about Lilly Allen.

I don't think LF's career will survive this, actually.

Callistemon Wed 22-Jan-20 17:42:36

There's loads going on growstuff and I have posted links on a couple of threads but, because they go against the majority view on the thread, they've been ignored.
Or perhaps posters have read the links and dismissed them.

But never mind, I'm used to being ignored.

3nanny6 Wed 22-Jan-20 15:49:36

I am not a fan of Lilly Allen as it seems others are of that opinion as well. In our house we have a pet name for her
it's "Silly Allen " so the little entitled luvvie can trot on and go somewhere else.

growstuff Wed 22-Jan-20 15:36:40

I'm not a fan of Lily Allen either!!! Is comparing luvvie speak the new national pastime now people have got a bit bored with Harry and Meghan? hmm

Is there really nothing else going on in the country or the world?

Chewbacca Wed 22-Jan-20 14:48:55

Anything said by Lily Allen can safely and immediately be dismissed as drivel.

Oopsminty Wed 22-Jan-20 14:32:16

The thing I found confusing about Lily Allen's comment was how she was tired of 'entitled luvvies' going on TV to force their opinions etc etc

But which entitled luvvies does she refer to?

From what I've seen, LF is quite rare.

It seems that the majority of 'entitled luvvies' tend to have a similar mindset to herself

Callistemon Wed 22-Jan-20 14:25:32

Maw the general rule on GN on celebs voicing political opinions is that it is a dreadful thing. Of course that was when it was celebs voicing views perceived as left wing. Now it’s right wing LF , it is of course, a wonderful thing.

I think it's because it's one over-privileged, public school educated luvvie pronouncing on another over-privileged, public school luvvie that was so hilarious.

No matter their message.grin

suziewoozie Wed 22-Jan-20 14:15:08

grow I expect it’s very easy to distract LF

growstuff Wed 22-Jan-20 14:13:44

I agree with you Iam64. The film isn't a documentary and I don't suppose it claims to be historically accurate. The same could be said about any film with a historical setting.

growstuff Wed 22-Jan-20 14:11:08

PS. I'm not a Russell Brand fan either, but he's not the one being discussed.

growstuff Wed 22-Jan-20 14:09:54

I haven't seen "1917" yet, so don't know how relevant the particular regiment is to the story. From what I understand, it's more about two individuals and the fighting is the context and a backdrop (could be wrong). I wonder how LF would have reacted if the whole regiment had been a Sikh one. I still don't understand how one Sikh soldier makes Sam Mendes "institutionally racist", as LF claims. In the original interview, he claimed that it distracted him from the whole story, which seems ridiculous.

3nanny6 Wed 22-Jan-20 12:32:36

When watching some morning T.V which had Piers Morgan on the producers decided to wheel out the very slated Lawrence Fox, oh no I thought was has he said now.

Once again he is now spouting how in his opinion the makers of the film "17" who he says showed just one "Sikh" soldier fighting alongside the regiment in the war were being racist to make us see that although we had white fighters that a sikh was also a fighter.
Piers Morgan did not agree with him and told him I think you have got it wrong.
Mr. Morgan also asked L.F. how are his work commitments going after Q.T. MR. Fox said work is okay he also proudly
announced he stands by all he said on Q.T.
He did however look for the sympathy card he stated "I have a son" and all this has given me some insomnia as I have had death threats.
OH DIDDUMS that's what you get for throwing your dummy out of the pram.
As for his views on no racism and the fact he lived on a council estate he is talking out of his b******e.
Once again where I live very close proximity there has been another murder (no not even a council estate) and nice people area and passing these places on daily basis is what people have to do this is "real " U.K. not some idiot like him talking rubbish.

TerriBull Wed 22-Jan-20 12:13:14

I don't think Russell Brand was a great addition to QT, anymore that LF was, particularly when he told the audience "don't vote for any of them politicians" which he reneged on later by endorsing Labour.

Happily these days, he's gone really, really quiet a combination of many things I imagine, a complicated man bun to attend to, advising Caroline Flack on how to be a better shot when hurling bedside lamps at boyfriends, I hear he told her to get out of the country in the aftermath of that, great advice Russell! maybe brushing up on his grammar should he make a QT comeback.......oh and nearly forgot a couple of kids as well! Or he could even be out in the golf course shock his father-in-law was a famous golfer, according to my husband and he'd know. All good I'd say, just glad he's found his niche, after a lifetime of shagging and drugs lots and lots of girlfriends and substances smile
