so much kinder than our MEPS

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 18:38:03

Labaik But you can't prove that being in the EU was detrimental to our economy during that time, can you?
As it's all hypothetical, I will only be able to answer that if you can prove that being in the EU hasn't been detrimental to our economy during that time. Maybe it was. Can you prove it wasn't? Such ridiculous questions.

MaizieD Fri 31-Jan-20 18:26:39

I think we'll stop being gloomy when we have something a bit more concrete than hopes and trite cliches to be cheerful about.

Such a good question, Labaik

.so how come we've done so well whilst being members of the supposedly tyrannical EU during that time?.

Dismissing it as 'hypothetical' really just means 'I'm ducking this one'

Labaik Fri 31-Jan-20 18:21:22

People on here have talked of closing down their business, families emigrating and concerns over access to medication. And you just poo poo that as gloom mongering etc. Bit insensitive imo.

Labaik Fri 31-Jan-20 18:19:41

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 18:11:52

This is the gloom mongers thread, so I accept their right to put a negative spin on everything positive.

Labaik - that's a hypothetical question that no-one can answer because we don't know what life would have been like if we were not in the EU ?

Labaik Fri 31-Jan-20 18:03:27

'Greta you ask what I mean by punching above our weight.
Since 1980 the UK has been ranked either 4th, 5th or 6th largest economy in the world by nominal GDP.
We are only the 78th or 79th largest country in size.
Our population is 21st largest in the world.
That is punching above our weight. ?
Let's all try and praise our country not bring it down.'
….so how come we've done so well whilst being members of the supposedly tyrannical EU during that time?. In what way did they prevent us being, say, 3rd?

Kalu Fri 31-Jan-20 17:56:00

I did wonder why bagpipes were included in this farce. I’m pretty sure people world wide, upon hearing bagpipes, associate them with Scotland.
Completely inappropriate in this case as Scotland wants to stay in the EU! ?

Greta Fri 31-Jan-20 17:40:27

Isn't it a tragedy then that in such a wealthy country many of its citizens have to rely on foodbanks, sleep in our streets, rely on abysmal public transport, unable to even afford so called 'affordable' houses, waiting for weeks for a GP appointment...

But yes, we do have many very wealthy people as well.

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 17:32:49

Why did the Brexit party follow bagpipes? . Scotland wants to stay. Perhaps they should have been preceded by Morris dancers.

Greta Fri 31-Jan-20 17:03:55

We have always punched well above our weight and will continue to do so.

Just what does this mean? Presumably it wasn't in the 1970's when we were described as the sick man of Europe. But now we'd better start punching hard and fast.

nannypink1 Fri 31-Jan-20 16:47:59

For Gods sake let’s have a bit of positivity instead of this constant doing down of the country ....it so depressing ..project fear alive and well still I see...

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 16:43:29

Sorry, last post was to MaizieD not OopsMinty ?

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 16:42:08

Oh dear OopsMinty you have such little faith in your country. Remainers can be so short sighted and don't seem capable of seeing the potential of the UK.
Never mind, in time you too will reap the benefits of Brexit like everyone else.

MaizieD Fri 31-Jan-20 16:12:26

although still close friends and trading partners with the rest of Europe

Have you totally failed to understand that we will be the EU's competitors after 11 pm this evening?

We have always punched well above our weight and will continue to do so.

Delusional. Utterly delusional

Chestnut Fri 31-Jan-20 16:03:32

Are we actually European Oopsminty? We have always been a bit separate, with our own currency etc. and we don't even drive on the same side. I see us as a unique sovereign country, although still close friends and trading partners with the rest of Europe. We have always punched well above our weight and will continue to do so.

Oopsminty Fri 31-Jan-20 15:54:10

We are still European.

How can people not understand this?

rosecarmel Fri 31-Jan-20 15:44:44

Looks rather somber from across the pond .. but it looks similar here too ..

Namsnanny Fri 31-Jan-20 15:33:17

growstuff analogy!

Framilode ... really?

Framilode Fri 31-Jan-20 15:25:41

I think Sarah Vine needs to look a bit closer to home regarding despicable behaviour.

growstuff Fri 31-Jan-20 15:23:23

But it's not a game.

Namsnanny Fri 31-Jan-20 15:21:34

I've just read Sarah vines account of the despicable behaviour throughout the brexit years.
It seems a fair account of the nastiness that abounded.
I sincerely wish I could wave a magic wand and make everyone's worries disappear, but I can't.
The nature of the game is that only the winning team counts. That's unavoidable
That said, I for one can understand the grief and sadness felt by some, and dont want to be the cause of extending it.
I and I'm sure many others want to forget the differences and move forward.

I don't say this lightly but I sincerely believe we are not stupid and the future is brighter for all of us.

lemongrove Fri 31-Jan-20 15:13:07

Our money will be very much missed by them BlueBelle.

lemongrove Fri 31-Jan-20 15:12:05

Well said Buffybee and Baggs....it makes me laugh when posters say they are no longer European. What do they think they are?
Too much hypberole by far on this subject from some.

Buffybee Fri 31-Jan-20 15:05:44

ruined our country in my lifetime
The country is not ruined.
Don't be so dramatic, we will be absolutely fine and probably more than fine.
