What a shower - they are not fit to govern the country

Following on from Boris Johnson's performance yesterday evening the comments from so many can be summed up by saying "What an idiot". Totally lacking in clarity, yet more spin designed to try make the government look better. I've been watching Good Morning Britain just now. The more we see the more it becomes apparent that they really haven't got much of a clue. Moderate Tories, Labour and others in Parliament need to force a change in government with a coalition of common sense pending a general election when the truth has come out.

The problems can be traced back to the Thatcher era when profits, privatisation and a lack of caring for society was the mantra. Brexit was just the latest example of not caring about the good of the country. Recent austerity for the sake of saving a few pence on income tax left the country unprepared for any sort of emergency let alone a pandemic.

The performance of the UK must be compared with that of Germany, South Korea and other countries who have handled the situation so much better. They have for years maintained Health and Care systems at a level with capacity to react, kept a manufacturing sector vibrant and seen an over reliance on the service sector as bad for their countries.

We should have tested from the start and where resources were limited tested where it really mattered. Assume that those in hospital with symptoms were positive and only testing those who were likely to pass the infection on. The true of deaths can only be estimated based on compariing this year's figures with those of recent years.

It will take years for Britain to regain the status it squandered away. We have the talent, may have the right type of leadership in some as yet less well known politicians. No quick fix just a slow gradual return to values that really matter.

So write to / email your MP's asking them to take a lesson from 1940 and form a government of National Unity, cancel Brexit and call a general election when and only when the situation is properly under control. Only parliament, if they have the courage, can call the executive to account.

trisher My definition of 'leftie' does not apply to you or many others on here and I congratulate you on such a rewarding career. However I disagree on your definition of a sick society. It is a fact that everyone cannot be equal. What you seem to be promoting is a society like the Marxist one Corbyn, McDonnell and their cronies hope for and which will never happen. You only need to look at Russia where in spite of murdering the royal family there are still haves and have nots.

growstuff Sun 17-May-20 12:48:33

Phew! I'm so relieved I don't meet any of the criteria to be a "leftie", according to Janpt hmm. Anybody got a label I could have?

GagaJo Sun 17-May-20 12:33:17

I probably shouldn't, but as a teacher I automatically discount anything that comes out of Gove's mouth. He DECIMATED British education. The effects are ongoing.

MayBee70 Sun 17-May-20 12:28:47

I didn’t see it myself but did Gove actually say on tv this morning that we are doing more tests than other countries?

MaizieD Sun 17-May-20 12:24:57

Oh, let go of your pearls, people and lighten up. It was a JOKE

I don't know where you've been all this time, Chewbacca, 'lefties' has been in common use for years. I didn't even know I was one until I came on here..

Chewbacca Sun 17-May-20 12:20:30

Is this what debate has come down to on GN? Calling each other silly names like lefties and wrongies? From all that's going on in the world right now, is this the level of your debating skills? 10 year old children could hold a better discussion group, without petty name calling, than any of you. You should be embarrassed.

Bridgeit Sun 17-May-20 12:12:08

I am liking the term ‘ Wrongies’ MaizieD, brilliant?

GagaJo Sun 17-May-20 12:04:00

??? Do you seriously want an explanation of irony?

Oopsminty Sun 17-May-20 12:01:45

That's because they're 'wrongies'. Bridgeit

And therein lies the problem

The 'tolerant' left are extremely intolerant of anyone who doesn't share their thoughts

I'm neither one nor the other

But it's very apparent that the left wish to assert some level of superiority

Which is fair enough but don't pretend differently

Ironic that those on the left are called lefties, but those on the right are not called ‘righties’

Why on earth is that ironic?

GagaJo Sun 17-May-20 12:01:26

I'd settle for just calling 'em nazi's but'll get shot down (ooer) for that. grin. JOKE! I don't mind political dissent. It's healthy.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 17-May-20 11:59:39

??

MaizieD Sun 17-May-20 11:58:03

That's because they're 'wrongies'. Bridgeit grin

Bridgeit Sun 17-May-20 11:56:46

Ironic that those on the left are called lefties, but those on the right are not called ‘righties’?

GagaJo Sun 17-May-20 11:22:19

Well said trisher.

trisher Sun 17-May-20 11:16:23

Well I'm a self confessed 'leftie" Janpt but I've spent my working life teaching children that education leads to success and opportunity and helping all to take pride in their achievements. I've seen a lot of people struggling to make ends meet and do their best for their children, and very few just sitting back accepting handouts. I think every child should be a wanted child but I accept that there will always be "accidents" and I don't think a child should suffer because of that.
I do think that a society that accepts some of its people should be on low pay and need food banks whilst others have millionaire lifestyles is a sick society. And I think one thing we should learn from this pandemic is that pay doesn't always recognise the real value of the work someone does, and I hope that will change.

GagaJo Sun 17-May-20 11:06:06

Odd that, given that most of the lefties on here are professionals who raised themselves out of the traditional working class through hard work and graft.

3 jobs in my case. Stacking shelves in supermarket, part time in school and also cleaning while doing my self-funded MA.

We support the vulnerable. Seems to me that the right-wingers just sit in judgement and blame the undeserving poor.

Janpt Sun 17-May-20 11:01:42

Furret I would say that the definition of 'leftie' is someone who thinks that being kind means not encouraging others to take pride in their own achievements but to sit back and accept handouts whilst making little effort to help themselves. They also think it's alright to continue to have more children than they can afford to feed without government support.

GagaJo Sun 17-May-20 11:01:20

Exactly Cindersdad. Something the right-wingers on here don't seem to get.

Most of us 'lefties' have left behind the election, the loss and ARE behind our leaders now. It just so happens that Dominic ISN'T doing well at this. And his not doing well is leading to thousands of British people dying.

I've thought for a while that the rest of the government need to step in. I actually DON'T think Boris is that bad, simply because he really is only PM in name. The rest of the govt need to kick DC out and either get BJ better advisors OR get a war cabinet together to lead an organised response. BJ can easily stay as front man. He's only a mouth piece. Doesn't really matter who makes the statements as long as there is a firm, informed, IN CONTROL hand at the tiller.

As I said, WAY beyond party politics. We need public pressure to force change in how they handle this crisis. Tories are in to stay for 5 years. So they need to get better at what they're doing to save lives.

Cindersdad Sun 17-May-20 10:23:04

Boris and Domnic have been rumbled, the Tories may instigate a coup or try to blame Matt Hancock for everything. However we are stuck with them until a General Election and by that time they will have time to sell more lies to more of the people.

Covid-19 will pass though our handling of it has shortcomings. The impact of Brexit will not sink in for about a year, that was a self inflicted national wound.

Furret Sun 17-May-20 07:59:57

Looks like more and more people are starting to think for themselves veganrock as Boris’ approval is dropping rapidly.

According to the papers

“Boris Johnson was hit by a growing revolt over his strategy for easing the Covid-19 lockdown last night as council leaders across the north of England joined unions in vowing to resist plans to reopen schools on 1 June.

Signs of disunity spread as a new opinion poll for the Observer showed approval ratings for the government over its handling of the crisis had plummeted since the prime minister dropped the “stay at home” message and eased restrictions a week ago.

In a further sign of discord, the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, writing in today’s Observer, says no one thought to tell the leaders of the biggest towns and cities outside London in advance of the prime minister’s decision to encourage people to go back to work last Monday.

“In Greater Manchester, we had no real notice of the measures. On the eve of a new working week, the PM was on TV ‘actively encouraging’ a return to work. Even though that would clearly put more cars on roads and people on trams, no one in government thought it important to tell the cities who’d have to cope with that.”

Pointing the finger at Johnson’s chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, the mayor adds: “Far from a planned, safety-led approach, this looked like another exercise in Cummings’s chaos theory.”

Hetty58 Sun 17-May-20 07:55:35

vegansrock, apparently so - I despair!

vegansrock Sun 17-May-20 07:49:07

Those who don’t mindlessly lap up the government’s lies are always lefties?

Furret Sun 17-May-20 07:22:30

If by ‘lefties’ you mean those who have a social conscience and care about others rather than just myself then I plead guilty.

If you mean someone who is trained to think for themselves and not blindly accept statements which are clearly inaccurate then I should hope all shades of political persuasions should be able to do that.

If you mean someone who, through their experience in their professional life has a clear understanding of the present predicament we find ourselves in and could have foreseen that the course the government has pursued would predictably have these results, then that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with a scientific understanding.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 17-May-20 07:15:30

Oh dear - a lefty plot

Whitewavemark2 Sun 17-May-20 07:12:51

Not lefties as you so quaintly describe those who believe that the prime minister of the U.K. should speak the truth.

“ We brought in the lockdown in care homes ahead of the general lockdown,' UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson told parliament on Wednesday.

@Reuters
reviewed the guidelines issued to care homes and found no evidence that any such early lockdown was ordered. reut.rs/2
