What a shower - they are not fit to govern the country

Following on from Boris Johnson's performance yesterday evening the comments from so many can be summed up by saying "What an idiot". Totally lacking in clarity, yet more spin designed to try make the government look better. I've been watching Good Morning Britain just now. The more we see the more it becomes apparent that they really haven't got much of a clue. Moderate Tories, Labour and others in Parliament need to force a change in government with a coalition of common sense pending a general election when the truth has come out.

The problems can be traced back to the Thatcher era when profits, privatisation and a lack of caring for society was the mantra. Brexit was just the latest example of not caring about the good of the country. Recent austerity for the sake of saving a few pence on income tax left the country unprepared for any sort of emergency let alone a pandemic.

The performance of the UK must be compared with that of Germany, South Korea and other countries who have handled the situation so much better. They have for years maintained Health and Care systems at a level with capacity to react, kept a manufacturing sector vibrant and seen an over reliance on the service sector as bad for their countries.

We should have tested from the start and where resources were limited tested where it really mattered. Assume that those in hospital with symptoms were positive and only testing those who were likely to pass the infection on. The true of deaths can only be estimated based on compariing this year's figures with those of recent years.

It will take years for Britain to regain the status it squandered away. We have the talent, may have the right type of leadership in some as yet less well known politicians. No quick fix just a slow gradual return to values that really matter.

So write to / email your MP's asking them to take a lesson from 1940 and form a government of National Unity, cancel Brexit and call a general election when and only when the situation is properly under control. Only parliament, if they have the courage, can call the executive to account.

westendgirl Of course I am not talking about the Russel group.
I mean some universities which sprang up from nowhere and offer degrees in subjects like media studies and beauty treatments

Jabberwok Sat 16-May-20 12:49:54

Tbh Janpt, you are beating your head against a brick wall on here! That's why people with other opinions don't bother to post. What's the point when all you get is sneery bigoted comments from the far left who are furious at losing the referendum and the election!!

Grany Sat 16-May-20 12:44:13

Why ask people to go back to work on public transport when R rate of infection has increased this week? And for children to go back to school?

There should be absolutely certain that infection is under control first before people ending lockdown. Doesn't take a lot of brains to know that Janpt

Boris was a Kings Scholar at Eton, for which you have to be pretty bright!
Boris obtained place at Balliol College where he took a Two-One in Greats and got an upper second class Honours in Classics.
Greats is seen as one of the hardest degrees Oxford has to offer and requires a fluent knowledge of Latin, and/or ancient Greek. He probably should have got a first! Oxford, to my knowledge holds too many distractions and to get a first does require 24/7 concentration!!
Diane Abbott got a .2.2 history degree from Newnham College Cambridge, no mean fete back in the 1970's. I think she got Masters Degree later on in politics, again an excellent achievement.

Johnson’s best quality is the ability to bull shit and lie

Janpt Sat 16-May-20 12:31:34

growstuff I couldn't care less about your opinion of me. The fact is Boris Johnson has qualities of leadership and communication that Corbyn and McDonnell lacked. All the Labour party ever does is criticize regardless of whether the policy makes sense. This blog appears to have been taken over by Labour voters so we are not getting a balanced and more sensible view.

westendgirl Sat 16-May-20 12:27:00

Sorry should read their degrees. Was feeling so cross that I hurried.

GagaJo Sat 16-May-20 12:24:31

Janipat, a degree from one of those universities is ONLY worth more because of the social prestige. They are no more rigorous than many other universities. They just happen to be the oldest and the most elitist. NOT the academic best. I have many past students who attended Oxford and Cambridge. As well as Princeton, Brown, Harvard etc. Those students fell into 3 camps. Those who had high scores. Those who had parents with social influence and money. Those who had parents who attended those universities.

My BEST by far ever student (incredible girl. Will be a famous academic one day I have no doubt) was rejected by Oxford. She DID have a family that could have gained entry for her but didn't want to cheat the system. Because she was quite quiet, didn't do well in the interview. They missed a trick there.

Boris didn't get there by ability. He was a mediocre student and was mediocre in all of his jobs prior to and including that of PM. We knew that BEFORE he became PM.

I personally think BJ would be less dangerous than Cummings. That man has an alternate playbook that is bombing. It may have won Brexit, but a virus isn't a public to be manipulated with smoke and mirrors like the populace.

westendgirl Sat 16-May-20 12:21:29

Are you discounting the Russell Group then ,saying that there degrees are worth little or nothing , or the other universities
who award degrees ?. What are you talking about Janpt.?

Lucca Sat 16-May-20 12:14:01

I sometimes wonder whether widdecombe and garage have snuck on to this forum complete with silly flags.

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 12:06:24

Diane Abbott has a degree from Cambridge. Are you going to send her a message and tell her all is forgiven?

Pantglas2 Sat 16-May-20 12:06:16

Any of the other parties .....let’s give em all a go - they can’t be any worse surely?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 16-May-20 11:53:28

[Reuters] Review contradicts Boris Johnson on [his PMQs] claims he ordered early lockdown at UK care homes"

Reuters confirms it. He didn't. We knew he didn't. Loved ones died because he didn't.

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 11:53:19

Give up Janpt. You're making yourself look very silly. (And obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about!)

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 11:52:21

[s[lutter] [splutter] A second class degree in classics from Oxford doesn't make somebody very bright nor is it a qualification to run the country.

PS. I know a number of people with firsts from Oxford and Cambridge. I don't think any of them would pretend to think they could run the country.

Janpt Sat 16-May-20 11:51:06

GagaJo What you don't understand is that any degree from Oxford or Cambridge is worth far more than one from any of these so called universities or from some of the 10% of the country who Blair encouraged to go when they would have been more suited to a practical apprenticeship.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 16-May-20 11:51:01

This is what you voted for

This week, a govt minister promoted far right lies & went unpunished. The Prime Minister & the Health Secretary lied about care homes. Johnson was shown to have lied about customs checks in Northern Ireland. Teachers were maligned, lockdown chaos escalated & the R number went up.

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 11:49:16

So who would you like to see in charge of health in Wales Pantglas?

growstuff Sat 16-May-20 11:47:45

So are you suggesting we give up on political parties and have an autocracy?

Johnson is indeed where he is because he won an huge majority in an imperfect system, but that doesn't mean he's not incompetent and dishonest.

Janpt Sat 16-May-20 11:42:52

Well said Firecracker123. They just won't accept the fact that the Labour party has had it's day !!

Firecracker123 Sat 16-May-20 11:06:52

Lots of sore grapes on here today.

Boris is where he is because he won a stomping 80 seat majority in the last General Election. Previous Labour voters deserted the Labour Party in droves. What's not to understand.

GagaJo Sat 16-May-20 10:59:33

As someone said to me online the other day (not on here), 'Tory supporters keep on about 'No one else could have handled it better' when actually, the entire rest of the world other than the US has handled it better.' A classic I think.

GagaJo Sat 16-May-20 10:57:55

Janpt, a degree from Oxford means nothing. There are plenty of idiots in universities. Boris was well known at both school and university for being lazy and constantly late. Despite all of his advantages he only achieved a 2nd class degree.

So not quite the academic high flyer you portray. He's where he is because of wealth and his connections. He's Cummings puppet as has become very very obvious. Way out of his depth in this crisis.

IMO (which is worth nothing at all, I'm aware) he would probably NOT have taken on this role, had he been able to predict what was coming.

Pantglas2 Sat 16-May-20 10:53:23

It’s not just about the virus handling in Wales growstuff my own health board has been in special measures since 2015! People make a big thing about having free prescriptions and free parking in hospitals - the price we pay for that is 3year wait for a hip op!

I hold no candle for Boris and The tories but let’s not pretend the Labour Party would do better - the situation in Wales alone (I know nothing about the other devolved nations) proves otherwise.

Furret Sat 16-May-20 10:40:30

Well I agree the country got the government it deserved!
