Will he resign?

News breaking tonight that Dominic Cummings and his wife, when ill with Covid-19, put their child in the car and drove 260 miles from London to Durham so that they could isolate at his parent's place and his parents look after the child. This happened some time after 27th March. Remember lockdown was imposed on 23rd March.

Seen in his parent's garden with his child on 5th April.

Neil Fergusson resigned because his lover visited his house after lockdown.

Scotland's Chief Medical Officer had to resign after visiting her second home twice after lockdown.

Cummings and his wife drive 260 miles to stay with his parents (who must be in their 60s at the very least)... What will he do?

Story is in most of the MSM now.

I signed this one. It did ask for money but Change. always does. I suppose they need something to pay their staff. Its got over 67,000 signatures so far and counting fast.

Was your comment said with tongue in cheek? I hope it was. DC`s mum may not see her 72nd birthday after her thoughtless son could have infected her.

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 15:15:51

Ah, thanks jishere.
I've found around that many, too.

They need to be amalgamated, I would think.

I also tried to sign one which kept banging on about donating money, so I gave up.

Jishere Sun 24-May-20 15:12:11

MissAdventure there is 10 petitions by the looks of it all on change.org not sure what one is greater than the other but some are asking for money which unless explained don't know why? And I won't be giving money.

Jishere Sun 24-May-20 15:08:05

I'm not one to read the papers but bought one this morning. For me this headline sums it up: One rule for him and Hell for us.
Goes on to tell about the doctor who couldn't see his father when he got covid and couldn't be at his funeral because of following lockdown rules!!I think any sensible person will sign the petition.

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 15:06:37

There are lots of petitions circulating.
Is there a main one, please?

Would anyone be able to put up a link?

FarNorth Sun 24-May-20 14:55:53

From an email I got:
"This Cummings episode is particularly important because across the media, it appears as though the Government have been rolling back the strictness of their rules in order to accommodate Cummings’ behaviour."

Instead of saying "He was wrong. He got caught." They're saying Stay At Home wasn't really necessary.

The police might as well put their feet up now, in relation to enforcing lockdown 'rules'.

NfkDumpling Sun 24-May-20 14:54:15

The petition is up to 66,000 now. At this rate it will have to be debated in Parliament.

NfkDumpling Sun 24-May-20 14:53:05

Three hours? Is Boris doing his talk this afternoon? We’ll need to look out for bruising, he’s obviously putting up a fight!

Jishere Sun 24-May-20 14:38:01

Hear hear Lucky girl.

Lucca Sun 24-May-20 14:35:07

I have often wondered what would happen if my DS and DIL. Were to be taken ill. They live 70 miles from me. The other GP live abroad. Worst case scenario I might have gone to help out (breaking guidelines ). But one thing is for sure they would not have got in the car with the kids and driven over here even to take up residence in one of my properties (ha ha).

GagaJo Sun 24-May-20 14:34:33

lizzypopbottle, EXACTLY.

DC has been in No.10 for 3 hours now. A resignation doesn't take that long. Neither does a sacking. Although knowing him, he would stand and argue the point.

I think they're working on excuses, deflection and lies. All part of his infamous modus operandi.

NfkDumpling Sun 24-May-20 14:33:26

Don’t know if this will work!:

Luckygirl Sun 24-May-20 14:33:21

a valuable member of the government team - !!!! - heard it all now!!!

There is a petition about it being the right thing for him to resign/be sacked: www.change.org/p/uk-parliament-dominic-cummings-must-be-sacked

Thousands of families have found themselves a similar position to Cummings with a young family, for whom they need to organise care. Did they all drive hundreds of miles during lockdown and risk spreading the virus and against all the rules? - no, they didn't. They followed the rules and struggled on.

He MUST go - the government will be left with nil credibility rather than just low credibility. And no-one will take their coronavirus advice seriously.

The arrogance of the man defies belief!

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 14:31:19

I'm not sure how valuable someone is when they refuse to adhere to the plans in place to protect others; particularly when they were instrumental in making them.

I have been told in no uncertain terms that I will be dismissed (and worse) if my distancing regs are flouted.

VictorMthe2nd Sun 24-May-20 14:30:56

It doesn't look like Cummings will resign, or be forced to, or be sacked - read this:
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/308340

lizzypopbottle Sun 24-May-20 14:29:24

My daughter and son-in-law both had the virus and were quite ill. They have two boys under 6 years and she was heavily pregnant with their new daughter. They went nowhere. They allowed no-one into their house. They managed with existing supplies (luckily they get Hello Fresh and have a milk+ delivery) until one of them was recovered and had isolated long enough to be allowed to go to the supermarket.

One politician defended DC and his wife as needing help to look after their 'toddler'. The child is four your years old and they are two parents! My daughter badly needed help but she and her husband followed the rules and managed.

What gives DC the right to claim such entitlement?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 24-May-20 14:28:35

And there is a second ticking time bomb - they fear a member of the public may file a complaint to Durham police alleging Cummings broke the Health Protection Regulations, which the police would be obliged to investigate"
Get down the copshop, people...

GagaJo Sun 24-May-20 14:16:53

A witch hunt is when an entirely innocent person is accused of something they haven't done.

Cummings isn't innocent therefore it isn't a witch hunt. It is being held to account for your actions.

GagaJo Sun 24-May-20 14:13:39

Same old excuse.

Elliegran Sun 24-May-20 14:12:51

Do I think he should resign - I hope not. He is a valuable member of the government team. We need to look forward not backwards and support each other. People have been whipped up into a frenzy by all the media hype. I for one do not want to believe the press who all huddle outside DCs gate, not one of them able to understand social distancing. Thinking they are in a position to criticise others.

I wholeheartedly agree with Lizbethann55, well said.

Jishere Sun 24-May-20 14:11:48

Yes Old goat ? I switched over the tv the other night and googlebox was on not a program I usually watch but it was so funny watching there reactions to his speech. ?? I guess they really were mimicking what are lots of viewers reacted.

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 14:08:04

There is a growing feeling amongst MPs (even conservatives) that he should go.
It's just a matter of them speaking up.

Jishere Sun 24-May-20 14:07:04

How is it a witch hunt? The government make the rules and when they break them we should sit here and say, 'You did the right thing, well done!'
Respect is lost and therefore how can you expect anyone, your neighbours included to follow rules, no wonder people are flocking to the beaches!!Its laughable! Why is it ok for anyone who has the symptoms to drive miles away to isolate? Yet again a terrieble decision made by someone who should be setting an example. But if any thing we should all learn from this the biggest rule is to just look after yourself!!!!

glammanana Sun 24-May-20 14:06:23

Just on my local radio news update that DC has been seen entering No 10 this afternoon lets see what happens !!
