No one has posted about George Floyd!

Disgraceful killing.

Are we unable to look beyond our own immediate locality? Have we stopped caring about anything beyond bloody Covid 19 and the fact we can't see our grandchildren?

Sorry, not my usual sort of post, will don my tin helmet and get behind the sofa.

"I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air. In the final analysis, the riot is the language of the unheard. What is it that America has failed to hear? In a sense, our nation's summers of riots are caused by our winter’s delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these occurrences of riots and violence over and over again. Social justice and progress are the absolute guarantors of riot prevention.”

It could be said of any country-

I just have to say, which is not racist, but this man actually did a crime, so then an arrest has to be made. If you can say I cant breathe, I am sure you can breathe. He did not die there and then as he stood up and was put in the back of a police car. Wait until the autopsy comes back and we might get some truth to the matter. When I watch the policeman with his knee on his neck, it does not look to me like he is chocking as that is when he is talking. Maybe things happened after the 2 minutes of film which we saw, but I am sorry but most of the criminal factor in America at the moment is young black kids. Do they know there is a Pandemic on?

Summerlove Sun 31-May-20 21:12:08

Says the woman nit picking. Who also told me not to tell other posters how or what to post.

It might not help George Floyd.
Talking about the American system being inherently racist, and not bringing in other crimes could help another black man from sharing his fate.

I understand it’s uncomfortable to think about. But we need to. We need to look into systemic racism. If we don’t speak against it, we tactically support it.

So no, I won’t stop posting

Jishere Sun 31-May-20 21:07:23

'What about' I cant find it but it won't help George Floyd now but sadly there is discrimination and corrupt police around the world. Please stop nit picking it's a waste of energy.

Summerlove Sun 31-May-20 20:56:06

You must have missed my opinion earlier in the thread. I didn’t tell you want to post or not, but more hoping to get you to be aware that “what about” doesn’t help

Jishere Sun 31-May-20 20:51:21

Summerlove What do u mean was not Ok? That wasn't to dimish what has happened to poor Goerge Floyd and no way takes away the high level of racislim that exists in the USA to the extent that it's ended in his cold bloody murder. It was to point out that this has been in the news earlier in the week and was regarding corrupt police and their brutal treatment of a women.
Dont Tell me what I should or shouldn't post. If you have no opinion on said subject don't nick pick mine as you yourself should be better than that. My god we did go off on a tangent and write about how busy beaches have got! Seen it lots on these threads so don't pick on mine.

Summerlove Sun 31-May-20 20:38:06

Maizie, the 80s are a long time ago. I truly believe our police are better now.

By this line of thought, America’s police should be better after what happened to Rodney King.

They obviously are not.

Summerlove Sun 31-May-20 20:36:51

Of course this is terrible but what was briefly in the news the woman who was tormented and raped in Ukraine by two police officers. Surely this matters too?

Oh of course it does. But bringing it up here to diminish what happened to George Floyd is not ok.

Be better than that.

We must all be better

I saw two items from America on Facebook yesterday. The first was about a young Hispanic lady, married to a white man. She was stopped in the street by a cop who insisted on doing a thorough check to see if she was an illegal immigrant. Why was he suspicious? Because she was talking to her young daughter in Spanish. This wasn't near the Mexican border, but in the north.
The second item was written by a black man. He says that the only way he can go for a neighbourhood walk without getting white people eyeing him suspiciously is to take with him his little daughter and his small dog. He loves birds, but can't go bird-watching without people thinking that he is up to no good. This is just because he is 6'2" well-built, and black.

A huge proportion of the prison population in the USA is non-white, and apparently many of them are innocent - 'stitched up' by the police for an easy conviction.

There are quite a lot of racial problems here in the UK, and the police are often accused of bias against black people. Thank heavens, though, they can't get away with blatant murder in full view of the public.

Sparkling Sun 31-May-20 18:53:14

No doubt that he was murdered. No one listens to what the demonstrators say, it’s as if if your black there it means your life isn’t important. Trump is a disgrace he incites violence. Shame on him and people with the same mindset.

rafichagran Sun 31-May-20 18:38:27

I have just come back to this thread. Thankyou PP for pointing out The description The Blacks is racist.
I would really hate my partner to be described in that way, and I would take offence at anyone who used it on mine or our presence.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 31-May-20 18:25:23

I have seen that video Bluecat the women has been sacked by her employer.

Bluecat Sun 31-May-20 18:09:01

All of us here are old enough to remember the story of police brutality followed by rioting being played out over and over again in America. Nothing ever happens to break the cycle.

There's a good clip on YouTube where Trevor Noah discusses the murder of George Floyd and the Minnesota riots. He also talks about the white woman who told a black man that she would call the police, and say an African American man was threatening her life, when he asked her to control her dog. I don't know how to put a link to YouTube, but you only have to Google "Trevor Noah George Floyd" and it comes up. I thought he was very perceptive and sensible. Well worth a watch.

grabba Sun 31-May-20 17:52:13

I heard this on the radio yesterday , appalling

Jishere Sun 31-May-20 17:10:43

Yes I thought it was your post on the other thread it does sound very organised. I just hope other coast lines can follow suit because I heard only last week some of the toilets were not opened at one of our coastlines. So that caused numerous problems for those who were down there.

Jishere Sun 31-May-20 17:06:25

I agree GG the pressure the police are under. It just so sad.

Jennyluck Sun 31-May-20 17:04:46

This utterly sickened me. I hate abuse of power, unfortunately in America it seems the norm.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 31-May-20 17:03:53

Jishere I posted about our local beaches being organised well.

Jishere Sun 31-May-20 17:00:16

GrannyGravy it is a sad time and I guess if people feel they need to protest. There was a protest the other week in London about being in lockdown no social distancing there as well. I bet public transport has been packed today!!
Jabberwok I just read a post on the other thread that wrote how organised the officials at the beach are, that was quite refreshing!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 31-May-20 16:54:48

There is live footage online of hundreds of protesters outside the gates of Downing Street chanting F~~k the police at the police guarding it, our Police have done nothing wrong!!!

This scene is being repeated in Trafalgar Square, Peckham, Cardiff and outside the American Embassy in London and numerous other places. I do hope that these protesters will show their appreciation to the key workers /NHS staff looking after them when they need it in a couple of weeks time #Covid-19 #no social distancing.

MawB Sun 31-May-20 16:33:01

And I understood the thread to be about the riots in the US and the appalling murder of a black citizen by Minneapolis police. And Trumps aggravation of the situation and his Tweet “When they start looting, we start shooting” hmm

Aspen Sun 31-May-20 16:25:24

To think Megan and Harry accused Britain of being racist. Los Angeles is not looking so wonderful now.

Jabberwok Sun 31-May-20 15:59:08

Not sure what you mean MawB. I was commenting about the crowded beaches etc!

4allweknow Sun 31-May-20 15:58:39

The officer who has been arrested apparently has a history of violence. The system needs cleaning up if such a person is allowed to continue in the role of a police officer.

Jabberwok Sun 31-May-20 15:55:03

I agree Pp, I think it sounds derogatory which of course it was when I was young! I always tried to say where the person came from, people were African, Indian , Australian, whatever. Black sounds horrid.
