How hateful are these "I'm a better person than you are" posts. All the hints that no one else helps their community as much, no one else does their bit. It is truly despicable and truly Conservative in its divisiveness.

I think the posts are just a spirited defence against the rather ludicrous accusations and suggestions in Gagajo's posts.
In fact, *Gagajo's accusations are rather sweeping and seem designed to cause intergenerational divisiveness.
From what I understand, she is probably 20+ years younger than many other Gransnetters.
That 20+ years is a generation and can mean a lot of changes in health and circumstances.

Gagajo didn't you say to you had been shielding and that an elderly neighbour had been volunteering to do your shopping for you? One of the elderly volunteer workforce which normally keeps this country's charity sector going?

It seems a big step for you to take from shielding, not going anywhere, to travelling back to work in a school.

And, as merlotgran says, it would be totally impossible now.

No. But I will be almost that age when I retire. No one's asking you to teach a class. 121 reading isn't exactly over exerting yourself.

Plenty of retired people give back to their communities. You're so keen to tell others to risk their lives. Put your money where your mouth is.

If you have health issues and should be shielding, Gagajo, should your employer not have furloughed you?

Most people of our age (possibly old enough to be your mother!) have worked and then spent many years volunteering to help charities and their communities.

When I couldn't work I did go into schools as a volunteer but, quite honestly I couldn't do it now. Besides which, volunteers have to pay for their own checks which has put many parents or grandparents off volunteering.

GagaJo, Volunteers would not be of any help at the moment. DD is a primary school deputy head and schools are run like a military campaign. Only the year teacher and a TA is allowed in the class room with the children. They have even been re-named 'bubble rooms.'

Safety for children and teachers is paramount.

Friday the school is deep cleaned.

I should think my generation is the most community minded of any generation because we all do so much more outside the home than older generations in the past.
Nearly everyone I know is involved in some way with trying to improve our own village/ town/ city, helping in charity shops, church ( or any) food banks, being on hardworking committees such as village hall, reading with children in schools ( in normal times) taking small groups of special needs children to museums and farms, working in ‘friends’
Cafes in hospitals, Sunday school, and general fundraising.
These things are done mainly by ‘my’ generation.

However Gagajo clearly does not see herself as being part of this generation of grandparents - working or retired. I wonder which generation she thinks she belongs to?

I find much of her argument specious - there is no shortage of teachers per se , my daughter has continued in her secondary school on a rota and as a key worker her three children (years R, 4 and 5) attend five days a week, for full days except Friday when they finish at midday.(Possibly to allow extra time for deep cleaning.) Their primary school is unsurprisingly not actively looking for volunteers to “help with reading” as the PPE and health ramifications make it unviable.
Many parents have opted not to send their children back which has contributed to smaller classes but the Head and staff have worked tirelessly to make appropriate arrangements.
Of course the bubble system can work with a smaller school population , how things will be in September remains to be seen. Most teachers I know or hear of have worked throughout, like key workers in other areas, not just the NHS .
But judging by furious OP , much blame is being batted about, along with too much sanctimonious posturing not infrequently by too many self-appointed experts

There is a lady on another forum, recently bereaved, volunteering online. I applaud her. As I said, giving back.

No worries there Sussex. I've been tested twice AND had the antibody test. I was quarantined until I got negative test results.

Gaga is just running true to form. I can’t imagine anyone expected anything else.

I hope she isn’t carrying the disease to her pupils given her recent history. Kindness and good manners seem to have passed her by unfortunately.

I worked in one until December thank you. With a lot of the very difficult students. They do tend to be one of my areas of success.

I am currently tutoring a girl online (UK) free to help her with her English. I do like to do my bit. I have a social conscience.

I'm sure there are LOTS of grans (or grandads) on gransnet who support their communities. Just possibly not those I'm currently debating with.

I'm perfectly calm thank you. I'm helping my C19 suspected student with an essay online. She's a very sweet girl. Working hard despite being very scared.

MawB. It wasn't safe. I have health issues and I did it anyway. AND one of my students now potentially has C19. And I've been in 4 lessons with her this week.

Those on the outside should help out. If you want schools back, they need more staffing than is currently available.

Support your local school with 2 or 3 hours a week. Because you clearly expect the teachers to report for a 50 or 60 hour week with double shifts.

These accusations about a lack of stamina do not sit well when you are talking to people in their 70’s, (apologies lemongrove if that isn’t you, but it is me!) who may be shielding for reasons of health issues or because shielding regulations apply to someone in the household.
I believe Lemongrove told us earlier that her DH spent some considerable time seriously ill in ICU last winter so your sanctimonious accusations are entirely out of place and out of order.
Calm down and stop acting as if you are the only person who knows anything about schools - or is indeed putting in 50-60 hours in the classroom.
And before you bleat about the hours teachers work, as a retired HOD and GCSE and A level examiner, I do know what I am talking about

This is the sort of entrenched and opinionated exchange of political views that makes other members on Gransnet cringe, and it’s so often the same people doing it.
