Racism and bullying can have serious psychological consequences for the victim and neither should be trivialised.

I agree that treating racism as a joke is disgusting, which is why I'm disgusted by a woman claiming that describing the colour of a dark bra as tobacco, in comparison to 'lighter' bras being given names of "sweet treats and deserts" is racist.

This trivialises a very serious issue.

I know some stuff is very politically correct and as a white person we may not take notice of names in the same way but that doesn’t mean firms can’t think about how to name things. As for Amazon N****r brown is horrendous.

elegran I don’t think opium is the name commonly used these days “street” names more often used. Many drug users wouldn’t know the name Opium so I doubt anyone would be offended by that - you are trying to make something out of nothing. Maybe you should complain to YSL. The fact is M and S did get a complaint and they decided to change the name. Maybe mis marketing more than anything else. There’s nothing much attractive about tobacco to be fair. To my mind tobacco brown is about an attractive a name as shitbrown.

No FarNorth I just think that the whole issue of a colour of a bra being called "racist" or insensitive towards people of colour is utterly ridiculous and, as others have already pointed out, it trivialises the whole subject of what racism actually is. Would you happen to have the answer to Elegran's question at all?

No-one replied to me mentioning the perfume Opium. There have been no reports of anyone complaining that they were a recovered addict looking for a perfume to match their personality, and were distressed by this name.

There was a time when 'flesh-coloured' was quite normal. I suppose that's no longer the case?

I hate tobacco as both my parents died from smoking related diseases plus the colour isn’t great for underwear is it? However, That’s my opinion so I wouldn’t complain about it - just wouldn’t buy it. However, this isn’t political correctness it was one customer complaining.

Unfortunately, if you start bringing colour connotations of bras, biscuits and paint charts into the serious realm of racism, sexism, etc you trivialise it.

I like Ginger Nuts which could upset red haired people. I like Treacle Toffee which could upset black people. Do those things need to be renamed?

Ok Granny23 I've had a look at the OED definition for "I'll bred" and it says

badly brought up or rude.
"this officer was so ill-bred that he could not distinguish between claret and burgundy

I searched further, using "illegitimate" in the thesaurus and found several suggestions but none were "ill bred".

I still have the same opinion as a previous poster who said that the world seems full of unexpected opportunities to be offended.

But that is the point Chewbacca. Words that were a small insult in my mind, where the worst possible condemnation to my friends - as bad as if I had called them "b*st*rds.

I thought that ill bred was "badly brought up or bad mannered" too and have never heard it referred to as illegitimate.
